I am developing a rather basic CMS locally and can not ftp due to permissions problems. I have FileZilla FTP server running in XAMPP and can connect without problems but receive error "550 Permission Denied" when my code tries to upload via ftp.
I tried changing permissions via my FileZilla FTP client but without success (presumably because it is windows- error: "504 Command not implemented for that parameter"). I also tried going to the target folder's properties --> security --> permissions and checking "full" for the user XAMPP is running under.
So how do I setup the permissions to allow my CMS to use ftp in XAMPP?
Finally figured it out. For anyone else who has this problem, there is no need to set permissions in Windows. Instead, on the FileZilla FTP server admin interface select edit --> users --> shared folders and check 'write'.
For a fix of this make sure that the root folder is allowed to write and pass rights permission. had this same issue for a script to run on local web xampp server windows xp.. just change the root file attributes to 755 then try it if that don't work try 777. should work now... hope this works for you... as it did me.
If that does not work go to your htdocs folder in your xampp directory then right click it and check properties .. if read only is ticked .. untick it and apply to all sub folders and files
You're behind firewall? Try to allow FileZilla server program in Firewall.

I have a website template that I uploaded to my ftp server using FileZilla. However when I visit the domain I get the error:
Directory Listing Denied
This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.
in the console it displays a 403 forbidden error. After researching I recognize that the default web page inside the root directory is not set. All my attempts to set the default page have failed. Here is what I tried:
1) Logged into ftp server with FileZilla. Clicked File > Site Manager > Advanced and set the root directory. The root directory contains a file that says index.html
2) Created a .htaccess file in the root that contains the text "DirectoryIndex index.html"
Solutions involving IIS are welcomed as well.
Any advice on how I can get this fixed?
Unfortunately I did not have permissions to access the actual server files so I contacted the hosting company.
They resolved my issue I believe using the approach #alvits recommended, however they have not returned my request to confirm how they solved it.
Thanks for the support
Ok, so I need to download files from my server since they are files that users upload. The reason I am using FTP with WAMP is just so I can test my script on my computer. Once I get it working, I can change the config files once the app is uploaded to a web server. I am using FileZilla.
MY application installation folder:
W:\wamp\www\idealeffort
The above directory is also set as my FileZilla user's home directory. There is a folder in my application called "_resumes". These are the files that I will need to download. So here is the script that I use to download these files.
$this->load->library('ftp');
$this->ftp->connect();
$this->ftp->download('/_resumes/'.$app['resume_filename'], FCPATH.'_resumes/'.$app['resume_filename']);
$app['resume_filename'] is a database result. I have checked to make sure that the file exists. I get the error "Unable to download the specified file. Please check your path."
Any ideas?
Note: FCPATH displays as "W:\wamp\www\idealeffort\ "
If you check codeigniter help
you have to give path from /public_html/....
So i think its problem with path.
Hope this helps
i have upgraded my XAMPP server to 1.7.7, after that the file uploaded using the php move_uploaded_file function is not accessible from the network. It works OK in the server. But from a remote machine it shows there is not enough permission.I can see the files in the uploads folder but I can't copy,move, rename or preview it.
$isMove = move_uploaded_file ($_FILES['image']['tmp_name'],'uploads/'.$_FILES['image']['name']);
if I uses the copy function instead of the move_uploaded_file it works perfect. But i have used move_uploaded_files in many projects. Is there any fix for this problem.
Also a project using the zend optimizer is also not working after the upgrade.
I think that you need to set permissions of the directory so as PHP scripts can run with uid of user who has write permission or else in the case if the permissions are not such if they give write permission to user www-data they may give error.
Our website is hosted using CPanel. When we connect over sftp via FileZilla, for some reason, we're unable to access public_html. It works with FileZilla on the mac but on the PC, if we type in the same directory, it automatically adds a backslash, so it becomes public_html\, which doesn't work for displaying the site.
What would you suggest to connect to public_html without the backslash?
you have to type in ../ under remote site and press enter.
it'll take you to the root. You should be able to enter any path.
I do a lot of work with files hosted on an FTP server. Currently to edit a file on the server I have to open the server in Cyberduck, navigate with the mouse to the folder I want and then click "Edit," which opens a temporary file. Anyway, editing files on the server would be way easier if I could use the terminal to navigate through the file directory and edit files. Is there a way to create a symbolic link in my home directory to an FTP server?
edit: I'm on a Mac
If your using linux you can mount an ftp site with curlftpfs. Check out this tutorial: Ubuntu Geeks Curlftpfs
If you are on windows you can use NetDrive:
NetDrive.Net
With either of these you can create links/shortcuts to your hearts content.
