how to inspect objects while debugging groovy (eclipse plugin or other) - debugging

I have started to learn groovy by building a pet project. I fetch some html with XmlSlurper and parse it etc. I am using eclipse3.4 with groovy 1.6 plugin. I am having a very difficult time trying to iterate thorugh all the html elements etc. I expected to set some breakpoint, inspect the current variable where my contents are, see what it contains, what do I have to iterate over, evaluate some expressions etc etc.
But I almost cannot do anything like that:
- some variables don't appear in the variables view (maybe its the ones not having a type?)
- select any expression but you cannot evaluate
- and worst of all (for me) is that any variable is shown with all its groovy stuff (metaclass, value...). The things that most of the time will interest the developer are buried inside the hierarchy and very difficult to find.
I had thougth that the ObjectExplorer mentioned in the doco would be able to help but I was unable to get it running with my script.
What do people use for this sort of thing while developing in groovy?

Option 1:
Give following a try in your script
groovy.inspect.swingui.ObjectBrowser.inspect(object)
This gives all public fields, properties, methods, etc
Option 2:
You can also use obj.dump() and or object.inspect() method to see values of the object
e.g. println obj.inspect() or assert obj.inspect() == "some values"

Eclipse 3.4 debug perspective works pretty well. Even the one without type information show up. Can you give specific problem that you are facing with debugging in 3.4

How to avoid implicit include statements in Rhapsody code generation

I'm creating code for interfaces specified in IBM Rational Rhapsody. Rhapsody implicitly generates include statements for other data types used in my interfaces. But I would like to have more control over the include statements, so I specify them explicitly as text elements in the source artifacts of the component. Therefore I would like to prevent Rhapsody from generating the include statements itself. Is this possible?
If this can be done, it is mostly likely with Properties. In the feature box click on properties and filter by 'include' to see some likely candidates. Not all of the properties have descriptions of what exactly they do so good luck.

I spent some time looking through the properties as well an could not find any to get what you want. It seems likely you cannot do this with the basic version of Rhapsody. IBM does license an add-on to customize the code generation, called Rules Composer (I think); this would almost certainly allow you to customize the includes but at quite a cost.
There are two other possible approaches. Depending on how you are customizing the include statements you may be able to write a simple shell script, perhaps using sed, and then just run that script to update your code every time Rhapsody generates it.
The other approach would be to use the Rhapsody API to create a plugin/tool that iterates through all the interfaces and changes the source artifacts accordingly. I have not tried this method myself but I know my coworkers have used the API to do similar things.
Finally I found the properties that let Rhapsody produce the required output: GenerateImplicitDependencies for several elements and GenerateDeclarationDependency for Type elements. Disabling these will avoid the generation of implicit include statements.

How to adjust the Summary Format to expose a float** as a float[][]?

I'm using XCode to debug some code. Specifically, the code that I'm debugging exposes a float[][] as float**. I am unable to change this syntax, but I'm not certain it would help anyway.
After including a relevant breakpoint, I want to view the contents of the array in the Variables view of the debugger?
When I double-click on the variable in the list of Autos, I see that I can add a Summary Format which seems deceivingly like it might help, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to use it!
In conclusion, how do I use the Variables View to see the contents of my array of arrays of this primitive type without resorting to typing commands directly to GDB (which, I believe, can also perform this function)?

Can I debug dynamically added Ruby method?

I want to store brief snippets of code in the database (following a standard signature) and "inject" them at runtime. One way would be using eval(my_code). Is there some way to debug the injected code using breakpoints, etc? (I'm using Rubymine)
I'm aware I can just log to console, etc, but I'd prefer IDE-style debugging if possible.
Hm. Let's analyze your question. Firstly, it does not seem to have anything to do with databases: You simply store a code block in the source form somewhere. It can be a file, or a database. Secondly, you don't want IDE-style "debugging", but TDD-style. (But don't concentrate on that question now.)
What you need, is assertions about your code. That is, you need to describe what output should your code produce given some input examples. And then, you need to run that code and see whether its function matches the expectations. Furthermore, if you are not sure about the source of your snippets, run them in a sandbox (with $SAFE = 4). If your code fails the expectations, raise nice errors (TypeError, or even better, your custom made exception), and then you can eg. rescue those exceptions and eg. use some default code snippets...
... but maybe I'm not actually answering the same question that you are asking. If that's the case, then let me share one link to this sourcify gem, which let's you know the source, so that you can insert a breakpoint by saying eg. require 'rdebug' in the middle of code, or can even convert code to sexps. That's all I know.

View a custom data type's values while debugging OCaml code

I have a list called list_ds of a custom-defined data structure in my OCaml source. I compiled the source for debugging and ran the debugger halting execution of my code at a breakpoint. Now I want to check particular element of the data structure within the list. If I use the print list_ds command in the debugger, I see [ abstr; abstr; abstr; abstr; <abstr>; ...] - list with word abstr. If I use "print list_ds.(0)" command in the debugger, it tells me that $1 : ds = abstr. But I really want to see the elements of the ds data structure at the first location in the list_ds. How can I do that?
One option would be to install your own custom print function for the type. This is described in Section 16.8.8 of the OCaml Debugger Manual.
A downside of this approach is that it requires quite a bit of setup, especially since the output must be done through the Format module. You might be able to use the deriving project to speed this up. It can generate formatting functions automatically.

RadRails, Ruby, Content Assist and Methods

I am new to Ruby, and I am currently working with an API which is unfamiliar to me. In order to use code completion, which helps me learn, I installed RadRails in Eclipse. However, I am having trouble with Content Assist: specifically, the Content Assist does not reveal the methods for objects in the API.
For example, one of my objects, ins, represents a loaded XBRL instance document. If I run ins.methods, the list contains all of the methods I want, including those in the API (such as functions that allow me to access items in the instance):

item_all_map
item_by_vocab
item_ctx_filter

etc.
However, if I just type ins. with Content Assist enabled, it only shows options like:
dclone
gem
gem_original_require

etc.
which appear to be system options. As a result, the Content Assist exposes exactly zero of the methods I actually want to use. If I know the methods ahead of time and start typing them, I can get Content Assist to give them to me, eventually, by pressing Ctrl+Space. However, that requires me to know what I want ahead of time; since I am using this to explore the API, that doesn't work for me.
Does anyone know how to get RadRails/Eclipse to show me the correct methods?

This is a general problem inherent to dynamic languages and IDEs/editors. The IDE has to guess at the type of the variable that the code assist is being invoked upon, and from that generate the list of applicable methods.
IRB has type information at runtime, so it knows what methods apply. The IDE is trying to guess the type by analyzing your code statically (not running it).
Having said that, the IDE should often be able to guess correctly. Providing the larger context of the snippet of code that this is being invoked on would be helpful to look into whether or not we could provide helpful content assist on this object.
