I'm about to download Xcode 4 and was wondering, will project files from the recent version of Xcode work with the new version?
I have opened and saved files without any problem between 3.2.5 and xCode 4. I heard that some had problems with interface builder generated files though. But I think you can say that you are safe if you're not using IB.

After installing Xcode 7 to play with Swift 2 in Playgrounds, I've got a weird problem:
when I open an existing Xcode 6.3 project with Xcode 6.3, it throws lots of errors about conversions to Swift 2.
This project was just cloned from the repository and hasn't been opened with Xcode 7 yet.
So my guess is that the Xcode 7 install messed up the Xcode 6.3 installed tools or something like that, but I have no idea how I could start to fix this.
I certainly don't want to open and upgrade this big project in Xcode 7 at the moment, but I do need to open it in Xcode 6.3 and Swift 1.2 to continue work on it.
Thanks to Leo's comment, I was able to clean the caches and derived data, and these errors went away.
But then Xcode refused to build the project's included frameworks (SQLite.swift and SwiftHTTP) even after cleaning everything and rebooting.
I had to uninstall them manually, clear the "build phase" and "target" fields where they appeared, then use CocoaPods to reinstall them.
After that, my app compiled again properly in Xcode 6.3.
Click on product in menubar
Click Clean
Then try reBuild project by click on play botton
it works for me
I originally created my XCode project with version 3.2.6 and it's moved through 4.x to 5.0. I only just realised that XCode 3.2.6 was still my default XCode and that new projects are .xcode rather than .xcodeproj.
Is there an easy way to update my project - or will XCode have done this and simply kept the old name?
Open the Xcode project by Right click the .xcode file and click the open with option and choose the latest Xcode application.
I have been trying to research a way that I would be able to revert back to Xcode 4.6.1, I can't seem to find a solution.
I've seen that in the past people have downgraded their Xcode.
Is there a way that I can downgrade Xcode 5 back to Xcode 4.6.1?
I have older versions of apps which clients do not wish to upgrade. However I still need to make amendments to theses applications. I need them to remain the same.
Is there any way that I can downgrade Xcode?
Move Xcode 5 to the Trash. Download and install Xcode 4.6. You can download older versions of Xcode from the following URL:
https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action
You can also have both Xcode 4 and 5 installed. You will have to rename your existing Xcode 5 app from Xcode to another name like Xcode5 before you install Xcode 4.6 in the Applications folder.
I followed your instruction to downgrade xcode 5.1 to xcode 4.6.1. The steps seems to work, however, when I try to install the command line tool, the Components tab of the Downloads preferences panel shows "No components are available". How do I get the command line tool to show up in the component panel?
Before the downgrade, with xcode 5.1, I did "xcode-select —install" to install command line tool. I assume it has been removed when I dragged the xcode 5.1 to the trash.
I have a slow internet connection and am trying to avoid downloading previous XCode documentation sets and SDKs.
I just installed XCode 4.5 and see they included no documentation sets for any iOS version. There is also only the SDK for iOS 6.
I deploy on iOS version 4.2 and later. I also had many iOS SDKs for testing and all the docsets.
Is it an issue to copy my 4.2, 4.3, 5.0, etc. docsets and SDKs to the XCode 4.5?
The new install location is different so I'm even wondering where I would move them to.
Thanks in advance
My old Developer folder was in the root HD folder. I don't know if that's typical. The docsets were located here:
HD/Developer/Documentation/DocSets
The simulators were located here:
HD/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs
Unfortunately I wasn't able to get XCode 4.5 to recognize any docset I moved from my XCode 4.2 installation. I had to let XCode 4.5 download them.
I did successfully move content from my developer XCode 4.5 GM to the AppStore XCode 4.5.
The .docset files are stored here:
~/Library/Developer/Shared/Documentation/DocSets
Nothing had to be done as XCode 4.5 from the AppStore recognized what I had downloaded using my XCode 4.5 GM. This is good news because it means future XCode versions will probably recognize them as well.
The simulator files are stored inside the XCode.app itself:
/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/
I just copied these folders from the XCode 4.5 GM to the App Store XCode 4.5 into the above folder:
iPhoneSimulator4.3.sdk
iPhoneSimulator5.0.sdk
iPhoneSimulator5.1.sdk
My understanding is that the minimum supported deployment target with Xcode 4.5 or later is iOS 4.3 so I didn't move any other simulator SDKs.
Of course, you need to control-click (or right mouse click) the XCode application and select Show Package Contents before you can navigate to the Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/ folder.
I don't know what this means when a new Xcode is release and the App Store installs the update. Will it wipe out these SDKs I moved? I've already made a backup of my modified XCode 4.5 in case they are lost when upgrading XCode through the App Store.
Hope this is helpful.
I downloaded a sample code from the MAC OSX developer library and the code is the format of a .pbproj (Project builder) and im unable to open it on xcode.
I have tried the following without any luck:-
1) Rename FancyAbout.pbproj to Old.xcodeproj
2) Open Old.xcodeproj. Xcode will ask you to upgrade it. Save it as
FancyAbout.xcodeproj.
3) When the project opens, choose Project > Upgrade All Targets in
Project to Native... to upgrade to the Xcode build system
4) Build and run.
I run a Mac 10.7.3 with Xcode on 4.3.2
Anyone have any suggestions on how i can get this running in xcode?
Thanks in advance!
To the best of my knowledge older Project Builder, and even older Xcode projects can not be opened or upgraded directly. The only real way you could upgrade would be to find a previous version of Xcode that is able to open and upgrade the older project then save the project using the older Xcode and see if the newest Xcode is then able to open the upgraded project.
Or, simply create a new Xcode project and copy over all the source files from the old project into your new project and go from there. This option is probably considerably easier then trying to find older versions of Xcode to do the upgrade with.
