I'm using MonoDevelop on the Mac with the latest Mono version installed.
What steps do I need to take to start using MVC3 in a project with RAZOR syntax (.cshtml files)?
I've read http://www.mono-project.com/Release_Notes_Mono_2.10#ASP.NET_MVC3_Support but it doesn't spell it out. How do I create my first .cshtml file? How do I tell my application to point to Index.cshtml, and not the default Index.aspx file when creating an MVC (2) project in MonoDevelop?
Update
I started a new MVC2 project in Mono. I started a new MVC3 project in VS 2010. I copied all the required DLLs over from the MVC3 to the MVC2 project in Mono. Now I build and get a "The compiler has appeared to crash" in Mono.
I thought there was MVC3 support? http://mono-project.com/Release_Notes_Mono_2.10#ASP.NET_MVC3_Support What am I doing wrong here?
I'm not sure how deep you're diving into Mono or what enviroment you're using, but here are three pretty useful blog articles about using MVC and Mono:
Get MVC3 Razor Running on Mono
Setting up Mono 2.8 with Asp.Net 4.0 and MVC2 on Ubuntu with MySql
Membership
Installing OpenSuse 11.2 with Mono 2.6.1 and Apache Using Text Mode Configuration – Porting to Mono
The second link has a downloadable MVC application that has already been setup to run with a version of Mono and uses MySql with the membership provider scheme scripted into it.
I hope these links help you, and good luck with your project.
If you are getting the "Compiler has appeared to crash" when trying to cut over to MVC3, you should set your project to .NET 4. You can do this by right clicking on the project->Options->Build->General and selecting Mono / .NET 4.
This gentleman seems to have had some success in getting MVC3 running in monodevelop on a mac.
I managed to get MVC3 and razor to work in xamarin studio on MacOS by following the solution here:

I've just reinstalled VS 2017 15.6.2 using web installer and tried to create new
empty Asp.net core 2.0 project.
But when i open it i got error:
Project file is incomplete. Expected imports are missing.
My version of SDK is 2.1.101, which was installed with visual studio.
I selected web and .net core development features during install, what am i missing?
I tried to create empty core console app and everything works fine.
UPDATE
this error is related to folder structure
C:\Novatek.Monitoring.WebUI // no errors
C:\Svn\Monitoring\trunk\Novatek.Monitoring.WebUI // Project file is incomplete. Expected imports are missing.
Try follow this tutorial:
https://www.asp.net/get-started
Remember to check your dotnet-core version with 'dotnet --version'
You can follow this simple and basic steps :) This link will help get started in creating your first dynamic ASP.NET Core MVC Web App connected to MS SQL Server.

I'm following the guide oninstalltion Umbraco here. It seems that they don't mention VS2015but I followed as closely I could by installing it into an empty MVC 5 project.
However, as I install UmbracoCMS via NuGet, I see this error (and a bunch of alikes, all nagging about DNX 5 being not supported).
NU1002 The dependency Microsoft.AspNet.WebHelpers 3.2.3 in project PocUmbraco does not support framework DNXCore,Version=v5.0.
c:\users\chamster\documents\visual studio 2015\Projects\PocUmbraco\src\PocUmbraco\project.json
I'm very unclear what to do about it. I've googled but didn't find anything helpful, likely due to ignorance and limited experience with Umbraco.
You actually installed into a ASP.NET 5 project (which has MVC6).
You should not use the ASP.NET 5 template, but something like 4.5.2 or 4.6. DotnetCore is not supported by Umbraco. Not sure about ASP.NET 5, but according to this, it does not sound very supported to me:
https://our.umbraco.org/forum/umbraco-7/using-umbraco-7/66903-umbraco-on-linux-with-aspnet-5
Also, leave out azure if you just want to get a POC running.
Then after you created your empty ASP.NET project, install nuget package UmbracoCms, and hit that F5 button and go from there :-)
Normally I develop with Visual Studio but yesterday I installed the new Ubuntu (I believe it is 14.04) hoping to try MonoDevelop (installed from Ubuntu repository version 4.x) and create some project in ASP.NET MVC3 (Razor). Unfortunately I got this error on project creation:
System.IO.FileNotFoundException:Could not find file “/usr/lib/monodevelop/AddIns/MonoDevelop.AspNet.Mvc/Templates/Common/Index.cshtml”.
File name:’/usr/lib/monodevelop/AddIns/MonoDevelop.AspNet.Mvc/Templates/Common/Index.cshtml’
There are some posts on SO which recommend to install the latest version from github (5.x), so I did so.
However now, the previously available option to create a new project in ASP.NET MVC3 (Razor) is gone.
Has anyone run into the same problem and found a workaround?
Am I missing something?
Currently working on a project that is being developed in VS2010. I'm running Windows in a VM, where I've done most .NET dev, but I'm now working on a new project that is ASP.NET MVC3 based so I thought I could use Mono/MonoDevelop to save some system resources by not running a Windows VM (Worked perfectly on a previous barebones MVC2 app).
The new MVC3 project is using Ninject, and extensions. I can't just run wth xsp4 and have it work (loads of errors). So I've been trying to git the individual projects (ninject, ninject.web.commons, ninject.web.mvc|ninject.mvc3) and building them.
(just building them from within MonoDevelop 2.6 beta 2, no success building with nant)
Ninject builds fine, but I get compiler crashes building the others. Do these even work with Mono 2.10.x? If so has anyone had any success building|using them?
So I was able to get this working, but not the way I had imagined. There are mono builds, etc., for the various Ninject projects, but I still had issues.
My second attempt was to just build from source, using MonoDevelop. This proved to be hell, mainly with Ninject.MVC3 (we had to change a bunch of the anonymous methods|calls to make the compiler happy). We eventually got this working, but to no avail, it too couldn't get our project working.
So, finally, I went down a different path.
I just copied these:
System.Web.Helpers.dll
System.Web.Mvc.dll
System.Web.Razor.dll
System.WebPages.Deployment.dll
System.Web.WebPages.dll
System.WebPages.Razor.dll
Into the /bin folder of the project.
Updated the references to point to these from within MonoDevelop, since it's GAC refs for MVC are for version 2)
Instead of trying to use the Mono versions for anything Ninject related, I just simply used the .NET ninject DLLs that were downloaded to VS2010 using NuGet.
Then everything, almost, worked. The project compiled fine.
The only issue I had left was that FreeTDS didn't work, while trying to communicate with a SQL server. I went through and got FreeTDS working, and verified it with Python and pyodbc. Mono still wouldn't connect, just timed out. I downgraded from Mono 2.10.2 -> 2.10.1 and, magically, it worked.
So now I've got our project working on my Mac with MonoDevelop (no VM needed to hog my resources) using MVC3, Razor, NHibernate, Ninject...
Phew.....
While converting the taget framework of an asp.net web application from 2.0 to 3.5 in visual studio 2008, i am getting the error : Exception of type 'System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException' was thrown
I solved the issue, my web application didn't have a web.config.I added a deafult web.config and then converted it.It worked fine.
I recently upgraded the target framework in the my web project's (Asp.NET web forms) properties from 4.8 to 4.8.1.
I searched the web.config for any "targetFramework" where it was referencing older versions and changed them to "4.8.1". Save. Recompile.
