I'm facing a problem while writing the vb script for opening a .xls file that is given below..
Dim XLAPP
Set XLAPP = createobject("excel.application")
XLAPP.Visible =true
XLAPP.Workbook.open"d:\book1.xls"
When I run this script the pop window display an error like this:
The test run cannot continue due to an unrecoverable error.
'd:\book1.xls' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.
If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.
Line (1): "Dim XLAPP".
When I write the script XLAPP.Workbook.Add then it adds an excel file but the above given script is not opening the excel file.
The .Open method is within the Workbooks object collection (plural), not the Workbook object (singular)¹.
XLAPP.Workbooks.open "d:\book1.xls"
fwiw, you may have used the Workbooks collection without thinking about it in XLAPP.Workbooks.Add. The .Add method is not a member of the singular Workbook object and I could not get that to run; Run-time error 424: Object required.
¹ Kudos to Matt Donnan and his comment above for supplying the correct response.

I'm trying to copy sheets from what I'm calling a "Master" workbook to a workbook that my staff has access to but I can't seem to get it to copy.
Once I have the script, I'm going to set it up to copy every day. That way I can edit the Master and it will essentially "auto update" for my staff every day.
function copyDoc() {
var sourceSheet = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet().getSheetByName('General');
var targetSheet = SpreadsheetApp.openById('13ERWTQoXeGb0cIfgfr2ZTsImnwmtaVB5c-Zm9ZZ5o6g').getSheetByName('General');
sourceSheet.copyTo(targetSheet);
}
It just tells me there's an error:
Error
Exception: The parameters (number,number,number,null) don't match the method signature for SpreadsheetApp.Sheet.getRange.
copyDoc # Test Copy.gs:11
I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing or what I should be doing. Essentially I need to copy Sheet 1 through 7 from Workbook A into Sheet 1 through 7 of Workbook B every single day. But the sheets are all already in each Workbook and titled.
The screenshot shows that your project has 4 files.
The file having the function that you are trying to execute is in file Copy Daily.gs. This file has only 7 lines. The error doesn't belong to that file (as explained below).
Test Copy.gs is the file name having the statement causing the error.
11 is the line number of the Test Copy.gs file.
getRange is the method having the problem
It's very likely that the error is occurring because the referred line from file Test Copy.gs is in the global scope. Statements in the global scope, no matter on which file they are, are executed before executing the function called.
Possible fix:
Open the Test Copy.gs file
Add // at the beginning of line 11
Another option is to delete the Test Copy.gs file. If you have valuable information on that file, before deleting it, make an appropriate backup.

Global Variables Preventing Other Functions From Running
I asked on Reddit and this ended up working!
function copyDoc() {
var sourceSheet = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet().getSheetByName('General');
var target = SpreadsheetApp.openById('13ERWTQoXeGb0cIfgfr2ZTsImnwmtaVB5c-Zm9ZZ5o6g');
sourceSheet.copyTo(target);
target.deleteSheet(target.getSheetByName("General"));
var targetSheet = target.getSheetByName("Copy of General")
target.setActiveSheet(targetSheet)
target.moveActiveSheet(1);
targetSheet.setName("General");
}
I then just copied and pasted it and changed the name of the sheets for it work across all of the sheets I have in one document.
I'm trying this:
Dim oApp
Dim iReturnedResult
Set oApp = CreateObject("Some.Application")
Set F_Ord = oApp.Documents.Open("Window 1", VarPtr(iReturnedResult))
The ActiveX control expects the second parameter to be a Long by reference.
This works perfectly well inside Excel VBA.
I can run this step by step, and see the result is returned like it should.
But, when I move this code to a VBS file and run it from the command line (CScript.exe), I get an error 800A000D, meaning it's the wrong type.
I have also tried creating an array instead, and tested with these commands, without any luck:
Set F_Ord = oApp.Documents.Open("Window 1", VarPtr(iReturnedResult(0)))
Set F_Ord = oApp.Documents.Open("Window 1", iReturnedResult(0))
Does anyone know how to pass a long variable by reference to an ActiveX control from VBScript?
The simple answer is VarPtr() is not supported by VBScript.
To my knowledge, there is no equivalent that allows you to pass a pointer to a variables memory address.

Visual Basic for Applications Features Not In VBScript
I am writing an HTA file with VBScript as the scripting language. I have a function where the user is prompted to choose the folder in which they would like to save a document. I didn't write this code myself, but instead borrowed it from here.
Function SelectFolder(myStartFolder)
Dim objFolder, objItem, objShell
Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Set objFolder = objShell.BrowseForFolder(0, "Select Folder to Save New File", 0, myStartFolder)
If IsObject(objFolder) Then SelectFolder = objFolder.Self.Path
End Function
I call this function in another one in order when I make the file and prompt the user to choose where to save it:
Sub Example()
Dim destPath, destFile, objWorkbook
destPath = SelectFolder(libPath)
destPath = destPath & "\Sample Export"
Set destFile = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
Set objWorkbook = destFile.Workbooks.Add()
objWorkbook.SaveAs(destPath)
(code to edit excel file)
End Sub
Example() works fine except when someone chooses to save their document in one of the four default libraries in Windows (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos). In that case, I receive an error saying "The file could not be accessed" and indicating the error is at the line that says "objWorkbook.SaveAs(destPath)". The error box then gives me the following suggestions:
Make sure the specified folder exists
Make sure the folder that contains the file is not read-only
Make sure the file name does not contain any of the following characters: < > ? { } : | or *
Make sure the file/path name doesn't contain more than 218 characters.
The error occurs when I open the HTA file and click a button calling Example(), which then opens a dialog box to ask the user to choose the file location. When Documents, Music, Pictures, or Videos is chosen, a "Script Error" box pops up with the error message listed above. I am not familiar enough with VBScript to know what the problem is exactly. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what to do.
I don't know exactly what the solution to the above issue was. However, I noticed that the path I pass to SelectFolder had a typo in it. libPath was supposed to be to the %userprofile% from the environment variable. However, I had pluralized "userprofiles" so that it was %userprofiles% instead. This took me to somewhere that looked right but wasn't. I fixed the typo and now BrowseForFolder takes me to C:/Users/*username* like it's supposed to. It turns out that I was being sent to the Desktop location because of the fourth argument in BrowseForFolder, instead of the user profile like I wanted.
I am a novice when it comes to object oriented program. That said, I have been trying to construct a vbscript that will capture a screenshot of the desktop and immediately save it to a folder I specify. Here is the code I have so far:
' START
Dim screenSize
screenSize = New screenSize.Size(Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.X,Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.Y)
Dim screenGrab
screenGrab = New screenGrab.Bitmap(My.Computer.Screen.Bounds.Width, my.Computer.Screen.Bounds.Height)
Dim g
g = g.System.Drawing.Graphics.FromImage(screenGrab)
dim copyS
copyS = Graphics.CopyPixels4.PaintEventArgs
dim copyS2
copyS2 = copyS.Graphics.CopyFromScreen(Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.X, Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.Y, 0, 0, Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.Size, CopyPixelOperation)
dim saveTo
saveTo = screenGrab.Save("C:\temp\screenGrab.bmp")
' END
I prefer to keep this in VBSCRIPT as this script will be incorporated into an existing vbscript I created. I currently get an error at line 3 stating "class not defined 'screensize". I am also concerned that even if I fix the error at line 3 I may run into other syntax issues afterward. The overall intent of the script is to 1) get the screen dimensons ; 2) perform the screenshot ; 3) and save the file to a destination. I am open to any suggestions to make this work.
I appreciate any help I can get at this point. Thank you.
It seems like you have messed VB.NET with VBScript.
screenSize, screenGrab, System.Drawing.Graphics - there are no such classes in VBScript by default.
What I'd suggest is to use some screen capture ActiveX (google it).
Or create your own ActiveX with VB6 by using code like this. Create new ActiveX project in VB6, add that module and compile.
And remember to run regsvr32.exe youractivex.ocx before using it in your script.
I use:
retVal = Shell("program.EXE " & filename, vbNormalFocus)
To execute a program need for my excel spreadsheet.
Is it possible to embed the EXE file in the excel file itself?
And how would I execute it then?
Ideias:
1 - Some kind of a bin2str function to turn binary to string (so I can store it in the program as a variable and a str2bin (the oposite)
2 - I read something about OLE Control (that you can embed it there), but I really don't know where to start on this one
Here's an outline solution that avoids OLE:
Create a hidden worksheet.
Use a base 64 encoded to convert the exe to text.
Store that text in worksheet cells on the hidden worksheet. Since there is a limit on the number of characters in a cell (32,767) you will need to break the string into chunks.
Obviously you'll need to reverse this procedure when you want to save and execute the exe file.
You can do this by using: Insert > Object and then selecting 'Create from File'.
To add it to your sheet using VBA:
Dim o As OLEObject
Set o = ActiveSheet.OLEObjects.Add(Filename:="C:\program.exe")
Then this is the command to execute program.exe:
o.Verb Verb:=xlPrimary
Not sure how to pass arguments to it, however (e.g. your filename).
Note: Untrusted applications prompt a warning when you run them.
