Sync clock with external server - windows

I want to sync my Windows clock with a clock of a certain Web Server which is not mine to a matters of miliseconds. How to get about doing this?
Why? Because this is a auction server and I want to place my bid at the very last moment e.g. 100 miliseconds before closure.
What have I tried?:
Biding and checking the time of my bid. But the bid server shows the time with a 1 second precision and this is no good enough for me.
I am fluent with most languages/environments e.g. C#, VBA, Java, Windows, UNIX etc. so almost any solution will do.

In order to get the time and date you should have something that.. Keeps track of the time and date!
There are two ways to achieve this.
The first and most common is to use a real time clock (RTC). There are plenty of them, but I usually use the maxim ones. You can get one with internal or external crystal, with or without battery to keep the time... They usually interface to the microcontroller through a I2C (or SPI) interface. You just set the time once (like you do for any clock) and it keeps going on. From time to time you can request the current time. Personally I prefer the ones with a battery backup feature, so I can remove the power to the circuit without resetting it. Then I ask them the time once every day or at boot, so I keep synced.
Another way is to use NTP. NTP is a network protocol to synchronize times over a network (so you need an ethernet or wifi connection).
The third way is by using the radio signal used to synchronize radio clocks. For this you should investigate what radio clocks are active in your zone, then find a suitable transceiver and decode the signal you get.

How to prevent time-based cheats on a time-based simulation game?

In the iphone game "Tiny Tower", I'm guessing it uses some kind of simulation based on the time spent between the last play and the current time, because you can set the current time forward and you will get the benefit from the fake elapsed time span.
Is there an algorithm that I can use to prevent this sort of thing? (Or at least make it difficult enough for the average user to pull off!)
Edit: thanks, I understand that, despite my wording, there's no way to prevent things you store on the client side, but I want to make it at least more difficult than "changing the time" to hack it!
The gamecube had a way to do this so it must be possible.
Is there an event triggered when the iphone time is set ? In that case you can react that.
Another solution is to require to be online when the game is launched, this way you can check time on a remote server.
You could has well check if you got an event on the phone login or wake up react to it, saving the time at that moment in your DB. You would have the last non modified time.
A last possible trick is to check for a file you know is going to be modified by an action prior to time change (such as login), and check the 'last modification' date.
You can investigate in the GPS direction as well. A GPS need to be synchronised with the satellite it contact, so it must keep track of time in some way, and maybe there is an API for that.
Unfortunatly you are on an iphone, which mean your possibilities are limited since applications got very few rights and are sandboxed.

Just though about it but, can you create event in the iphone calendar ? And check if it has been trigered ? Cause you could set a fake meeting or something for every day. Not clean, but creative.
EDIT 2: can you set a timer as a code for IOS to execute in 60 minutes ? If you can, set this timer, pass the time expected to be when this code run, then when the code run, compare and inform your program.
One way to prevent it is to monitor time passing by checking timestamps for their logins in a database. It doesn't matter if the client's iPhone's time is off; the database on your end will still know how long it's been since the last login.
I think if you have internet access you can take the time from a server.
A second solution : You can record the "datetime" and every time you see a "BIG" difference between the record datetime and the running datetime you know there might be a problem.
but this is not elegant, i know.
You can also record a small ammount of datetimes that the application started and check the diffrence with the running datetime.
Also you can use "Activity"->"Datetime" so the "Updates" (levels etc) can't be retaken.
Because the system Datetime can be changed by user, there is potential for "hack".
call a web service to get the time, rather than rely on the phone. There are several places you could get time from, google is your friend i'm sure, or create one yourself, and use the local time of the machine the service runs on for the time.
You could also use the Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers to get a consistent time

How would you start automating my job?

At my new job, we sell imported stuff. In order to be able to sell said stuff, currently the following things need to happen for every incoming shipment:
Invoice arrives, in the form of an email attachment, Excel spreadsheet
Monkey opens invoice, copy-pastes the relevant part of three columns into the relevant parts of a spreadsheet template, where extremely complex calculations happen, like =B2*550
Monkey sends this new spreadsheet to boss (email if lucky, printer otherwise), who sets the retail price
Monkey opens the reply, then proceeds to input the data into the production database using a client program that is unusable on so many levels it's not even worth detailing
Monkey fires up HyperTerminal, types in "AT", disconnect
Monkey sends text messages and emails to customers using another part of the horrible client program, one at a time
I want to change Monkey from myself to software wherever possible. I've never written anything that interfaces with email, Excel, databases or SMS before, but I'd be more than happy to learn if it saves me from this.
Here's my uneducated wishlist:
Monkey asks Thunderbird (mail server perhaps?) for the attachment
Monkey tells Excel to dump the spreadsheet into a more Jurily-friendly format, like CSV or something
Monkey parses the output, does the complex calculations
Monkey sends a link to the boss with a web form, where he can set the prices
Monkey connects to the database, inserts data
Monkey spams costumers
Is all this feasible? If yes, where do I start reading? How would you improve it? What language/framework do you think would be ideal for this? What would you do about the boss?
There are lots of tools that you could apply here, including Python, Excel macros, VB Script, etc.
In this case, PowerShell seems like an excellent choice, as it naturally combines COM access to Office, .NET, and scripting, and is all-around-awesome. If you already know a suitable technology, you'll get the job done fastest with what you know. Othewise, PowerShell.
(C# 4.0 is also reasonable, although earlier versions suck when interacting with Office's COM interfaces.)
Don't get carried away trying to solve the whole problem at once. Start by picking a small, easy part that gets you a lot of value right away. You are more likely to succeed this way. (To get your boss to agree, you need success fast. If you aren't telling your boss, you need success even faster!). Once you have that done, you can use your new-found free time (maybe only a few minutes per day) to extend your tools and skills to the next bite-sized piece. Success will accelerate success.
In time you will replace monkey with code, and either get a promotion or quit in disgust and get a better job.
The big parts are Excel and email. Excel can be handled with either COM or some sort of interaction with OpenOffice.org. Email, well, there's dozens of ways to do it. My hammer of choice is Python, along with pywin32 or PyUNO, and poplib and smtplib.
Boss... will always be boss. Not always very much you can do about the icky wetware stuff.
I'd start by asking myself the following questions
Does the invoice have to come via email or can there be a web form where the users can enter the data? There is a easy way to put a form on google docs so you can download the response in excel format in a common format set by you. I'm sure there are better ways too.
Does the boss need to create a new spreadsheet of can you provide him with a database app where he can view your form, enter the price, check "approved" and have that fire off the process that puts it in the production db?
Can the interface to the client program be worked around? Can you have some other app call the client
Can the text to the end user be sent by you and not the client app? If so, ca you automate that part
Just some thoughts.
One solution to #1 is to send email to a Unix server (instead of Exchange) and use procmail to dump out attachments (see http://gimpel.ath.cx/howto_fetch_proc_metamail.html for an example of how)
As for boss, have a nice web page which you can email him a link to. And send him a short email (3 lines or less) telling him that using that page will save him 30 mins of work over the course of a month and you 2 hours of work in a month. Just be prepared to back up the #s.
However, very high level, un less you're prepared to do the whole automation thing on your own time, you better be able to sell your boss that overall time savings x6 months are less than time to develop this. 'cause may be monkey salary in his eyes is low enough that the cost of software is just not worth it - and sadly he just may be right depending on how complicated a bulletproof robust solution is.
As I noted above, your last question is probably the most salient. It is probably best approached as a personal skunkwork project where you show the boss a completed product one day, collect your innovation bonus and then get fired because a stupider monkey can now do your job instead of you.

Web Development: What page load times do you aim for?

Website Page load times on the dev machine are only a rough indicator of performance of course, and there will be many other factors when moving to production, but they're still useful as a yard-stick.
So, I was just wondering what page load times you aim for when you're developing?
I mean page load times on Dev Machine/Server
And, on a page that includes a realistic quantity of DB calls
Please also state the platform/technology you're using.
I know that there could be a big range of performance regarding the actual machines out there, I'm just looking for rough figures.

Less than 5 sec.
If it's just on my dev machine I expect it to be basically instant. I'm talking 10s of milliseconds here. Of course, that's just to generate and deliver the HTML.
Do you mean that, or do you mean complete page load/render time (html download/parse/render, images downloading/display, css downloading/parsing/rendering, javascript download/execution, flash download/plugin startup/execution, etc)? The later is really hard to quantify because a good bit of that time will be burnt up on the client machine, in the web browser.
If you're just trying to ballpark decent download + render times with an untaxed server on the local network then I'd shoot for a few seconds... no more than 5-ish (assuming your client machine is decent).
Tricky question.
For a regular web app, you don't want you page load time to exceed 5 seconds.
But let's not forget that:
the 20%-80% rule applies here; if it takes 1 sec to load the HTML code, total rendering/loading time is probably 5-ish seconds (like fiXedd stated).
on a dev server, you're often not dealing with the real deal (traffic, DB load and size - number of entries can make a huge difference)
you want to take into account the way users want your app to behave. 5 seconds load time may be good enough to display preferences, but your basic or killer features should take less.
So in my opinion, here's a simple method to get a rough figures for a simple web app (using for example, Spring/Tapestry):
Sort the pages/actions given you app profile (which pages should be lightning fast?) and give them a rough figure for production environment
Then take into account the browser loading/rendering stuff. Dividing by 5 is a good start, although you can use best practices to reduce that time.
Think about your production environment (DB load, number of entries, traffic...) and take an additional margin.
You've got your target load time on your production server; now it's up to you and your dev server to think about your target load time on your dev platform :-D
One of the most useful benchmarks we use for identifying server-side issues is the "internal" time taken from request-received to response-flushed by the web server itself. This means ignoring network traffic / latency and page render times.
We have some custom components (.net) that measure this time and inject it into the HTTP response header (we set a header called X-Server-Response); we can extract this data using our automated test tools, which means that we can then measure it over time (and between environments).
By measuring this time you get a pretty reliable view into the raw application performance - and if you have slow pages that take a long time to render, but the HTTP response header says it finished its work in 50ms, then you know you have network / browser issues.
Once you push your application into production, you (should) have things to like caching, static files sub-domains, js/css minification etc. - all of which can offer huge performance gains (esp. caching), but can also mask underlying application issues (like pages that make hundreds of db calls.)
All of which to say, the values we use for this time is sub 1sec.
In terms of what we offer to clients around performance, we usually use 2-3s for read-only pages, and up to 5s for transactional pages (registration, checkout, upload etc.)

Is there a generally acceptable definition of (soft) realtime delays?

I'm trying to find a benchmark for how long users are willing to wait for a response from a remote service. In my case the response is for very useful but not business critical validation of data entry. I guess that there must have been some work done in the HCI space on this.
If you know of a generally accepted definition for soft realtime responses then great but I'd also appreciate your well reasoned thoughts.

US DOD MIL-STD 1472-F Human Engineering Standard has the most widely accepted requirements for maximum allowed response time (from Table XXII, page 196, times in seconds):
Key Response (Key depression until positive response, e.g., "click"): 0.1
Key Print (Key depression until appearance of character): 0.2
Page Turn (End of request until first few lines are visible): 1.0
Page Scan (End of request until text begins to scroll): 0.5
XY Entry (From selection of field until visual verification): 0.2
Function (From selection of command until response): 2.0
Pointing (From input of point to display point): 0.2
Sketching (From input of point to display of line): 0.2
Local Update (Change to image using local data base, e.g., new menu list): 0.5
Host Update (from display buffer): 2.0

As you can see, acceptable response time depends on what response the user is waiting for. For something like a pulldown menu appearing, it's 0.5 seconds max. For a full page load in a browser, you want something to appear in 1.0 s to 2.0 s and the full page loaded in 10.0 s. In all the above, shorter response times are better. Only in bizarre circumstances will users object to a 0.001s response time.
In any case, if the response time will be greater than 0.5 s, then you need to provide feedback such as a throbber or hourglass sprite. If response time is a minimum of 5-15 s (depending on what standard you use), provide a progress bar. With a progress bar, very long response times (on the order or minutes over even hours) may be acceptable as long as you set it up for the user as a “batch” process rather than being an interactive program. It's much better for the user to make all input and wait an hour than to make input on four occasions, waiting 15 minutes after each.
The above list has the accepted standards. How long your users are willing to wait (e.g., before giving up) essentially boils down to the user making a cost-benefit analysis. Is what I’m going to get worth the wait? What are my sunk costs? Is there an alternative (e.g., another web site) that can do it better? Can I do other things while I wait to make the most of my time? However, whatever users willing to do, you can bet they’ll resent delays greater than the standards above.
Human reaction time seems to be around 200 ms - anything around there will be perceived as instantaneous. That sort of number is hard to achieve, especially in an application that gets information from remote services.
If you take a look at Google's search suggestion box, the lag there is minimal - less than a second. It's astoundingly fast, and really remarkable for a web application. This is really nice for Google's users, but it's bad news for you. These days, users expect most applications to react with the same sort of speed an efficiency; anything slower is considered rather laggy. However, it's worth noting that people's patience usually varies with the complexity of the task at hand. A simple form submit should never take much time, but something like uploading photos is expected to take a while.
My feeling is this: go with your gut. If your application is fairly simple then you should try to get the wait/load time down to less than a second. If you can't, then your best bet is to add an indicator so the user knows that some computations are being done in the background. This can be in the form of a small animation or a progress bar.
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is not typically a well-defined number. Users expectations vary widely and can change depending on what it is you're talking about.
As computers continue to become more ubiquitous and we (the consumers) continue to have growing expectations of speed, remote services, websites, and even applications will need to continue to respond more quickly. Generally speaking, you want everything to be as fast as possible.
With this said, I would look at what your remote service is for. Since you said, "the response is for very useful..." to me, that means it probably will get used frequently. People tend to use what is useful. If that's the case, I would look for ways to make that remote service respond quickly.
Of course, there is also the caveat that you don't want to start optimizing before the service is written. What is the current response time? What is the context in which this will be used? Those factors will do a lot to determine the longest users are willing to wait for the service.
You might want to search for "SLA" or "Service Level Agreement". Those are the documents in a web business that make guarantees as to how long data will take to get back to the user, whether it's an HTML document or a web service call.
