I'm writing a bash script for copying an existing directory into another one and there modify all the filenames containing the name of the older directory replacing it by the name of the new one.
I'm using this command, which it works fine
find . -depth -name '*foo*' -execdir bash -c 'for f; do mv -i "$f" "${f//foo/bar}"; done' bash {} +
However, as I must do this for several destination directories, I want the 'bar' string in the above command to be contained into a variable, so I could change the content of the variable in a loop (iterating an array) and copying and replacing these files in a batch.
What changes should I do to the command? I've tried the following, but it does not work
app="Workflow2";
strChange="f//Workflow1/"${app};
find . -depth -name '*Workflow1*' -execdir bash -c 'for f; do mv -i "$f" "${strChange}"; done' bash {} +
The command must be modified as the following
$(find . -depth -name '*Workflow1*' -execdir bash -c 'for f; do mv -i "$f" "${'${strChange}'}"; done' bash {} +)

I have a series of music folders. Some of the file names contain an underscore which I would like to get rid of.
With
find /Users/Chris/CDs -type f -name "*_*"
I find all of the files with underscores.
it appears that I can add -execdir mv {} to the command but do not know what to add from there.
I think {} provides the full path and file name as a string of the file with underscores but I do not know how to use something like sed 's/_//g' to remove the _ on the new file name.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Try:
find /Users/Chris/CDs -type f -name "*_*" -execdir bash -c 'mv -i -- "$1" "${1//_/}"' Mover {} \;
How it works:
-execdir bash -c '...' Mover {} \;
This starts up bash and tells it to run the command in the single quotes with Mover assigned to $0 and the file name assigned to $1.
mv -i -- "$1" "${1//_/}"
This renames file $1. This uses bash's parameter expansion feature, ${1//_/}, to create the target name from $1 by removing all underlines.
The option -i tells mv to ask interactively before overwriting a file.
The option -- tells mv that there are no more options. This is needed so that files whose names begin with - will be processed correctly.
Example
Let's start with a directory with these files:
$ ls
1_2_3_4 a_b c_d
Next we run our command:
$ find . -type f -name "*_*" -execdir bash -c 'mv -i -- "$1" "${1//_}"' Mover {} \;
After the command completes, the files are:
$ ls
1234 ab cd
The purpose of $0
Observe this command where we have added an error:
$ find . -type f -name "*_*" -execdir bash -c 'foobar -i -- "$1" "${1//_}"' Mover {} \;
Mover: foobar: command not found
Note that Mover appears at the beginning of the error message. This signals that the error comes from within the bash -c command.
If we replace Mover with -, we would see:
$ find . -type f -name "*_*" -execdir bash -c 'foobar -i -- "$1" "${1//_}"' - {} \;
-: foobar: command not found
When running a single command in a terminal, the source of the error may still be obvious anyway. If this find command were buried inside a long script, however, the use of a more descriptive $0, like Mover or whatever, could be a big help.
I want to rename a file present in several subdirectories using bash script.
my files are in folders:
./FolderA/ABCD/ABCD_Something.ctl
./FolderA/EFGH/EFGH_Something.ctl
./FolderA/WXYZ/WXYZ_Something.ctl
I want to rename all of the .ctl file with the same name (name.ctl).
I tried several command using mv or rename but didnt work.
Working from FolderA:
find . -name '*.ctl' -exec rename *.ctl name.ctl '{}' \;
or
for f in ./*/*.ctl; do mv "$f" "${f/*.ctl/name .ctl}"; done
or
for f in $(find . -type f -name '*.ctl'); do mv $f $(echo "$f" | sed 's/*.ctl/name.ctl/'); done
Can you help me using bash?

You can do this with one line with:
find . -name *.ctl -exec sh -c 'mv "$1" `dirname "$1"`/name.ctl' x {} \;
The x just allows the filename to be positional character 1 rather than 0 which (in my opinion) wrong to use as a parameter.
Try this:
find . -name '*.ctl' | while read f; do
dn=$(dirname "${f}")
# remove the echo after you sanity check the output
echo mv "${f}" "${dn}/name.ctl"
done
find should get all the files you want, dirname will get just the directory name, and mv will perform the rename. You can remove the quotes if you're sure that you'll never have spaces in the names.
Whole story: I am writing the script that will link all files from one directory to another. New file name will contain an original directory name. I use find at this moment with -execdir option.
This is how I want to use it:
./linkPictures.sh 2017_wien 2017/10
And it will create a symbolic link 2017_wien_picture.jpg in 2017/10 pointing to a file 2017_wien/picture.jpg.
This is my current script:

How to implement it? I do not know how to incorporate basename into to strip ./.
To run basename on {} you would need to execute a command through sh:
find "$SOURCE" -type f -execdir sh -c "echo ln -s '{}' \"$DEST/${1}_\$(basename \"{}\")\"" ";"
This won't win any speed contests (because of the sh for every file), but it will work.
All the quoting may look a bit crazy, but it's necessary to make it safe for files that may contain spaces.
You can use this find with bash -c:
find $SOURCE -type f -execdir bash -c 'echo ln -s "$2" "/$DEST/$1"_${2#./}' - "$1" '{}' \;
${2#./} will strip starting ./ from each entry of find command's output.
$1 will be passed as is to bash -c command line.
If you have large number of files to process I suggest using this while loop using a process substitution for faster execution since it doesn't spawn a new bash for every file. Moreover it will also handle filenames with white-spaces and other special characters:
while IFS= read -r file; do
echo ln -s "$file" "/$DEST/${1}_${file#./}"
done < <(find "$SOURCE" -type f -print0)
I have a directory named as assets, which in further has a set of directories.
user_images
|-content_images
|-original
|-cropped
|-resize
|-gallery_images
|-slider_images
|-logo
These folders can have folders like original, cropped, resize. And these folders further will have images. These images are named something like this – 14562345+Image.jpeg. I need to replace all the images/files that have + to _.

I was able to do this in the current directory. But I need to iterate this to other many other directories. How can I do that?
You can use this loop using find in a process substitution:
cd user_images
while IFS= read -r -d '' f; do
echo "$f"
mv "$f" "${f//+/_}"
done < <(find . -name '*+*' -type f -print0)
With find -exec:
find user_images -type f \
-exec bash -c '[[ $0 == *+* ]] && mv "$0" "${0//+/_}"' {} \;
Notice that this uses mv and not cp as the question states "rename", but simply replace by cp if you want to keep the original files.
The bash -c is required to be able to manipulate the file names, otherwise we could use {} directly in the -exec action.
The following will run recursively and will rename all files replacing + with a _ :
find . -name '*+*' -type f -execdir bash -c 'for f; do mv "$f" "${f//+/_}"' _ {} +
Notice the use of -execdir :
Like -exec, but the specified command is run from the subdirectory containing the matched file, which is not normally the directory in which you started find -- Quoted from man find.
Which will protect us in case of directory names matching the pattern *+* which you do not want to rename.
I would like to replace :2f with a - in all file/dir names and for some reason the one-liner below is not working, is there any simpler way to achieve this?
Directory name example:
AN :2f EXAMPLE
Command:
for i in $(find /tmp/ \( -iname ".*" -prune -o -iname "*:*" -print \)); do { mv $i $(echo $i | sed 's/\:2f/\-/pg'); }; done
You don't have to parse the output of find:
find . -depth -name '*:2f*' -execdir bash -c 'echo mv "$0" "${0//:2f/-}"' {} \;
We're using -execdir so that the command is executed from within the directory containing the found file. We're also using -depth so that the content of a directory is considered before the directory itself. All this to avoid problems if the :2f string appears in a directory name.
As is, this command is harmless and won't perform any renaming; it'll only show on the terminal what's going to be performed. Remove echo if you're happy with what you see.
This assumes you want to perform the renaming for all files and folders (recursively) in current directory.
-execdir might not be available for your version of find, though.
If your find doesn't support -execdir, you can get along without as so:
find . -depth -name '*:2f*' -exec bash -c 'dn=${0%/*} bn=${0##*/}; echo mv "$dn/$bn" "$dn/${bn//:2f/-}"' {} \;
Here, the trick is to separate the directory part from the filename part—that's what we store in dn (dirname) and bn (basename)—and then only change the :2f in the filename.
Since you have filenames containing space, for will split these up into separate arguments when iterating. Pipe to a while loop instead:
find /tmp/ \( -iname ".*" -prune -o -iname "*:*" -print \) | while read -r i; do
mv "$i" "$(echo "$i" | sed 's/\:2f/\-/pg')"
Also quote all the variables and command substitutions.
This will work as long as you don't have any filenames containing newline.
