How to properly use WSAAsyncSelect? - winapi

I've asked here a ton of questions about WSAAsyncSelect and NET.Few months ago I even spent 500 rep on a bounty and answered it myself(I made a wrapper).In the end I got used to the winsock in the framework.
Today I'm asking about unmanaged languages,the bad point is that I miss the framework way of doing things with sockets.I'm writing my project in Delphi,but I understand C-like languages so it'd be no problem and I'm not even asking for any code.I love natural things,so please don't suggest any components,pure code only. :)
People say it's good to create another hidden form and set the message loop there to properly use AsyncSelect.
Well,my question is simple:I placed the whole winsock functions i wrote to make my life easier inside that hidden form and also I set the WSaAsyncSelect with it's handle,the message loop is also there,but I've written child classes(many classes,huge code),the parent class is that hidden form.
Is WSAAsyncSelect thread-safe? Will this slow down things(what i've done with classes)?
Do I have to create threads outside the message loop?
Any other tips for using AsyncSelect properly will be greatfuly appreciated.
Edit: to avoid any misunderstanding,I'm asking directly about AsyncSelect().The project I work on requires 2 servers and 1 client,which I think,could be handled well with that call.

Are you coding to WinSock directly, or using the VCL's TClientSocket and TServerSocket components? If the latter, then they already handle WSAAsyncSelect() internally for you (yes, they do use their own hidden window).

No, but sockets can be used by multiple threads if desired. However, the socket messages will only be processed by whatever thread owns the window that was passed to WSAAsyncSelect().

where is fyne's thread safety defined?

I was attracted to Fyne (and hence Go) by a promise of thread safety. But now that I'm getting better at reading Go I'm seeing things that make be believe that the API as a whole is not thread safe and perhaps was never intended to be. So I'm trying to determine what "thread safe" means in Fyne.
I'm looking specifically at
func (l *Label) SetText(text string) {
l.Text = text
l.textProvider.SetText(text) // calls refresh
}
and noting that l.Text is also a string. Assignments in Go are not thread safe, so it seems obvious to me that if two threads fight over the text of a label and both call label.SetText at the same time, I can expect memory corruption.
"But you wouldn't do that", one might say. No, but I am worried about the case of someone editing the content of an Entry while an app thread decides it needs to replace all the Entry's text - this is entirely possible in my app because it supports simultaneous editing by multiple users over a network, so updates to all sorts of widgets come in asynchronously. (Note I don't care what happens if two people edit the same Entry at the same time; someone's changes will be lost and I don't care who's. But it must not result in memory corruption.) Note that one approach I could take would be to have the background thread create an entirely new Entry widget, which would then replace the one in the current Box. But is that thread safe?
It's not that I don't know how to serialize things with channels. But I was hoping that Fyne would eliminate the need for it (a blog post claims it does); and even using channels I can't convince myself that a user meddling with a widget in various ways while some background thread is altering it, hiding it, etc, isn't going to result in crashes. Maybe all that is serialized under the covers and is perfectly safe, but I don't want to find out the hard way that it isn't, because I'll have no way to fix it.
Fyne is clearly pretty new and seems to have tons of promise, but documentation seems light on details. Is more information available somewhere? Have people tried this successfully?
You have found some race conditions here. There are plans to improve, but the 1.2 release was required to get a new "BaseWidget" first - and that was only released a few weeks ago.
Setting fields directly is primarily for setup purposes and so not expected to be used in the way you illustrate. That said, we do want to support it. The base widget will soon introduce something akin to SetFieldsAndRefresh(func()) which will ensure the safety of the code passed and refresh the widget afterward.
There is indeed a race currently within Refresh(). The use of channels internally were designed to remove this - but there are some corners such as multiple goroutines calling it. This is the area that our new BaseWidget code can help with - as they can internally lock automatically. Using this approach will be thread safe with no changes to the developer in a future release.
The API so far has made it possible for developers to not worry about threading and work from any goroutines - we do need to work internally to make it safer - you are quite right. https://github.com/fyne-io/fyne/issues/506

How to interface blocking and non-blocking code with asyncio

I'm trying to use a coroutine function outside of the event loop. (In this case, I want to call a function in Django that could also be used inside the event loop too)
There doesn't seem to be a way to do this without making the calling function a coroutine.
I realize that Django is built to be blocking and a therefore incompatible with asyncio. Though I think that this question might help people who are making the transition or using legacy code.
For that matter, it might help to understand async programming and why it doesn't work with blocking code.

Yes i know that it can be hard and painful, but it might be the sanest choice. If you are wanting to use Django like I was... Well, you've got a lot of work to do to make Django async'd. I'm not sure it is possible, but I found at least one attempt: https://github.com/aaugustin/django-c10k-demo (Though, in a youtube video the author explained all the shortcomings of this).
use asyncio.async or asyncio.Task:
These items will enable you to run something async inside of blocking code, but the downfall here is that you will not be able to wait for them to finish without doing something ugly like a while loop that checks if the future has completed... ugh, but if you don't need the result, that might work for you.
About case #2: Blocking code should be at least wrapped with .run_in_executor.

How do I do a For loop without freezing the GUI?

I would like to know how I could run the following loop in a way where it doesn't freeze the GUI, as the loop can take minutes to complete. Thank you.

The short answer is you run the loop on another thread. The long answer is a whole book and a couple of semesters at university, because it entails resource access conflicts and various ways of addressing them such as locking and queueing.
Since you appear to be using VB.NET I suggest you use the latest version of the .NET framework and take advantage of Async and Await, which you can learn about from MSDN.
These keywords implement a very sophisticated canned solution that will allow you to achieve your goals in blissful ignorance of the nightmare behind them :)
Why experienced parallel coders would bother with async/await
Standout features of async/await are
automatic temporary marshalling back to the UI thread as required
scope of exception handlers (try/catch/finally) can span both setup and callback code
you write what is conceptually linear code with blocking calls on the UI thread, but because you declare calls that block using "await", the compiler rewrites your code as a state machine makes the preceding points true
Linear code with blocking calls is easy to write and easy to read. So it's much better from a maintenance perspective. But it provides an atrocious UX. Async/await means you can have it both ways.
All this is built on TPL; in a quite real sense it's nothing more than a compiler supported design pattern for TPL, which is why methods tagged as async are required to return a Task<>. There's so much to love about this, and no technical downside that I've seen.
My only concern is that it's all too good, so a whole generation will have no idea how tall the giants on whose shoulders they perch, just as most modern programmers have only dim awareness of the mechanics of stack frames in call stacks (the magic behind local variables).

Data sharing in GUI, Matlab

now I'm developing a GUI with pop-up windows, so actually it is a workpackage with multiple GUIs.
I have read thorough the examples given in help files (changme, and toolpalette), but I failed to animate the method to transfer data from the new one back to the old one.
Here is my problem.
I have two GUIs, A, the Main one and B that I use it to collect input data and I want to transfer the data back to B.
Question 1:
I want to define new subclasses of handles in A.
lets say,
handles.newclass
how can I define its properties, e.g. 'Strings'?
Question 2:
In A, a button has the callback
B('A', handles.A);
so we activate B.fig.
After finished the work in B,
it has collected the following data (string and double) in B(!)
title_1 itle_2 ... title_n
and
num_1 num_2 ... num_n
I want to pass the data back to A.
Following the instruction, I wrote the codes shown below.
mainHandles = guidata(A);
title = mainHandles.title_1;
set(title,'String',title_1);
However, when I go back to A, handles in A was not changed at all.
Please someon help me out here.

The solution I found is adding extra variables (say handles.GUIdata) to handles structure of one GUI, and whenever the data are required, just read them from the corresponding GUI.
And It works well for me, since I have a main control panel and several sub-GUIs.

I have had similar issues where I wanted external batch scripts to actually control my GUI applications, but there is no reason two GUI's would not be able to do the same.
I created a Singleton object, and when the GUI application starts up it gets the reference to the Singleton controller and sets the appropriate gui handles into the object for later use. Once the Singleton has the handles it can use set and get functions to provide or exchange data to any gui control that it has the handle for. Any function/callback in the system can get the handle to the singleton and then invoke routines on that Singleton that will allow data to be exchanged or even control operations to be run. Your GUI A can, for instance, ask the controller for the value in GUI B's field X, or even modify that value directly if desired. Its very flexible.
In your case be sure to invalidate any handles if GUI A or B go away, and test if that gui component actually exists before getting or modifying any values. The Singleton object will even survive across multiple invocations of your app, as long as Matlab itself is left running, so be sure to clean up on exit if you don't want stale information laying around.

Regarding Question 2, it looks like you forgot to first specify that Figure A should be active when setting the title. Fix that and everything else looks good (at least, the small snippets you've posted).

Organizing GUI code

My question has two parts:
Does anyone have any tips or references to some documentation on the web about how to write GUI code that is easy to read, write, and maintain?
Example.
I find that the more extensive my GUI forms become, I end up with a long list of fairly short event handler methods. If I try to add any private helper methods, they just get lost in the shuffle, and I constantly have to scroll around the page to follow a single line of thought.
How can I easily manage settings across the application?
Example.
If the user selects a new item in a drop-down list, I might need to enable some components on the GUI, update an app config file, and store the new value in a local variable for later. I usually opt to not create event handlers for all the settings (see above), and end up with methods like "LoadGUISettings" and "SaveGUISettings", but then I end up calling these methods all over my code, and it runs through a lot of code just to update very few, if any, actual changes.

Some guidelines for the first question, from an OO perspective:
Break up large classes into smaller ones. Does that panel have a bunch of fairly modular subpanels? Make a smaller class for each subpanel, then have another, higher-level class put them all together.
Reduce duplication. Do you have two trees that share functionality? Make a superclass! Are all of your event handlers doing something similar? Create a method that they all call!
Second question. I see two ways of doing this:
Listeners. If many components should respond to a change that occured in one component, have that component fire an event.
Global variables. If many components are reading and writing the same data, make it global (however you do that in your chosen language). For extra usefulness, combine the two approaches and let components listen for changes in the global data object.
If you're using WPF, you might want to read the Composite Application Guideance for WPF.
It discusses many of these topics (as well as many others). The main goal of that guideance is to make large scale applications in a flexible, maintainable manner.
You should definitely look at Jeremy Miller's guide to rich client design. It is incomplete, but I believe he is writing a book on the subject.
Another blog you should check out is Rich Newman's. He is writing about Composite Application Block which is a MS best practice guide on how to structure rich clients.
You can also read this book which is only a very light read but gives you some good ideas.
