When I launch Visual Studio 2010, the inner work area screen always goes black or white and the title bar says VS is not responding. It does this for about 20 seconds before returning to normal operation.
Does anyone else experience this, and how can it be fixed?
Windows Vista32 with 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon 4850
Doesn't sound like you have enough RAM to handle visual studio during start up. I experienced this on my previous machine (vista32 2GB RAM) before buying a new Windows 7 64 bit 8 GB RAM and now everything works fine.
I had the same issue and found this incredibly useful. PowerCommands for Visual Studio 2010 Simply install it and go to the File Menu / Recent projects and Recent Files and clear the list. That will speed up visual studio signficantly.

I'm working in Visual Studio 2022 in C++, but lately cl.exe started to load my RAM very heavily, with 8 gb of my RAM cl.exe eats up 5 gb, not even during compilation but just when the studio is open.
After that, the computer hangs completely, the mouse does not move, the keyboard does not react in any way, the time on the taskbar does not go. After installing a paging file on the drive where Visual Studio is installed, the computer practically stopped freezing, but still the mouse moves jerkily, and everything is very laggy
I just installed Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015 Version 14.0.23107.0 D14REL hoping for a performance improvement over 2013. When I load a very large ASP.NET web forms solution, I have to wait over 30 seconds. After it is loaded, when I try to paste text into the source view of an ASPX page, I am intermittantly enduring a 15+ second wait. A popup tells me that VS.NET is busy performing background tasks.
I'm running Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 on a recently purchased Dell Precision workstation with 16GB RAM and an Intel Xeon E3-1240 v3 # 3.40GHz. My C: drive is on a SamSung SSD. Here is what I would like to know:
What can I do to make VS.NET 2015 perform faster?
I found that VS.NET was I/O bound because when I disabled Microsoft Security Essentials entirely the performance was acceptable. There is an option in MS Security to exclude certain processes from security scans. After I added ~/Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe to MS Security Essentials' list of excluded processes, it ran acceptably fast.
If you are using ReSharper then turning it off makes performance considerably faster. Similarly Node.js Tools for Visual Studio can slow down your IDE.
I've downloaded visual studio 2015 RC .iso and started installation.
But It is taking too long time.
It is around 20 hours of installation time but still it is not complete.
My machine is with intel i5 440 processor and 8GB of RAM. But still it is taking this much time.
Please note. I've selected all option in Visual Studio Community 2015 RC Installation ( Full Install )
Can anybody tell me the reason for this much amount of time?
Simplist possible problem is that the installer has lost it's internet connection. The lovely team at MS reponsible for this installer for VS Community 2015 did not program in an error message if the internet connection is lost. It simply won't do anything, forever if it still needs to download. Once the internet connection is re-established, it'll happily download and installer some more.
Horrible oversight.
I guess the problem is the same as found in Visual Studio 2015 installer hangs during install?. Please check and do the needful. This worked for me after hours of wasting my time.
My system currently has Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Edition installed. I'm thinking of installing Visual Studio 2013 Professional Edition. I referred to this link which seemed to be a duplicate of my question. But there is no discussion there about memory consumptions.
My question is will running 3 versions of VS on the same machine cause too much of memory consumption? I'm having 8 GB of RAM and an i5 processor.
I just want to be sure before I install. Any suggestions or answers will be welcome.
Thank you. :)
You can have as many versions installed as you want without impact (other than disk space). On my previous machine (i5 proc and 8 gigs of RAM) I had VS2005, VS2008, VS2010 and VS2012 and I didn't notice an increase in memory consumption of individual instances.
Of course, if you run multiple instances at the same time memory consumption will rise, but that is still true if you run multiple instances of the same version of Visual studio. I regularly run two or three instances with fairly complicated solutions (20-50 projects) at the same time on 8 gigs of ram without slowdowns or issues.
I'm working on Visual Studio 2008, Smart Client + infragistics controls are installed and we have more than 50 User Controls. When opening the Visual Studio "Tool Box", Visual Studio is completely freezing. I couldn't work after that. I have to kill the process and open again. At this point CPU usage is around 50, CPU usage is 1 or 2 when i work on code. How to get rid out of this issue. This is really time consuming process.
try:
Visual Studio 2008 takes a long time to open the toolbox for a solution that contains many custom controls
