How to get Microsoft HTML Help 2 Compiler? - documentation-generation

Where can I download the Microsoft HTML Help 2 compiler (or bounding SDK)? I want to generate HTML 2 documentation from my programming projects using Sandcastle Help File Builder and the Sandcastle Guided Installation wizard is instructing me to download that component.
Excerpt about HTML 2 taken from Sandcastle main page:
The HTML Help 2.x output includes a
valid set of collection files and an
H2Reg.exe configuration file to
simplify deployment and integration of
the help file into existing
collections such as those used by
Visual Studio.

The HTML Help 2 compiler is available from Microsoft in the Visual Studio 2008 SDK 1.0 download.
(You shouldn't need to have Visual Studio 2008 IDE installed to have these SDK tools.)
Apparently the file needed is hxcomp.exe
After installation of the SDK (on x64 system) the needed file was installed here and the Sandcastle Wizard found it.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Help 2.0 Compiler\hxcomp.exe
On an x86 system it would be found under the regular Program Files folder name.
Addendum Notes: About tracking down the answer, etc:
According to a CodePlex Sandcastle Help File Builder forum post:
So I checked my installation, and it
appears that I don't have HXCOMP.EXE
installed on my machine anywhere.
According to this article, it's only
in version 1.0 of the VS 2008 SDK. I
have Visual Studio 2008 installed.

The article referenced in the above post mentions:
Where can I download HxComp.exe?
VS 2010 doesn't use MS Help2 format so there is no Help2
compiler available for it. Starting
with VS 2010, the new MS Help Viewer
format is used
For VS 2008 hxcomp.exe is a part of VS 2008 SDK version 1.0. Note, the
latest version VS 2008 SDK doesn't
contain hxcomp.exe, so you need to
install version 1.0! It is probably
possible to install version 1.0 and
then the latest version over it.
For VS 2005 hxcomp.exe is a part of VS 2005 SDK.
For VS .NET 2003 hxcomp.exe is a part of VSHIK 2003.
For VS .NET 2002 hxcomp.exe is a part of VSHIK 2002 (Visual Studio Help
Integration Kit v2.1).

Although I found the solution by installing the recommended VS 2008 SDK 1.0, you might use one of the alternate sources listed in the points.

The 'XamarinShellPackage' package did not load correctly

I have encountered the following error:
The 'XamarinShellPackage' package did not load correctly.
It happens when i start Visual Studio 2015 Community Update 3 Or Visual studio 15 Preview 4.
I even reinstalled windows 10 and it doesn't help.
As asked, pasting VS info:
Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 15 Preview 4
Version 15.0.25618.0 PREVIEW
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 4.6.01586
Installed Version: Enterprise
Visual Basic 15 Preview 4 00369-50000-00000-AA551
Visual C# 15 Preview 4 00369-50000-00000-AA551
ASP.NET and Web Tools 2016 15.0.20802.0
Common Azure Tools 1.8

JavaScript Project System 2.0
JavaScript UWP Project System 2.0
NuGet Package Manager 3.5.0
Parallel Debugger 1.0
SQL Server Data Tools 15.1.60805.0
TypeScript 2.0.1.0
Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova Update 10
Visual Studio Tools for Universal Windows Apps 15.0.25618.00
Xamarin 4.1.1.8 (60e5c00)
Xamarin.Android 6.1.1.1 (7db2aac)
Xamarin.iOS 9.8.1.4 (3cf8aae)
The tooling in the version information here is a little out of date. The solution in this case was to perform a thorough uninstall of Xamarin in Windows and reinstall using the latest available Stable release. I linked #Dorad to the direct download, but you can find this by signing into Xamarin.com, navigating to the Downloads page and selecting the download from the relevant drop-down list for your OS / desired Xamarin platform:
Another quick thing people can try that worked for me was deleting the .vs folder from the root of the solution folder. Make sure VS is closed when you do it.
There is a potential workaround you may want to try while we finish up a fix for this.
Please, close all open VS instance and copy this file (note you may need to adjust the path to your specific VS instance):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\MSBuild\Microsoft\Microsoft.NET.Build.Extensions\net461\lib\netstandard.dll"
to the Xamarin extension folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Professional\Common7\IDE\Extensions\Xamarin.VisualStudio
And then open VS and check if you can still repro.
thanks,
I had the same problem after the latest VS2017 update..I resolved uninstalling an extension (Visual Studio Bitbucket plugin) which - apparently - was in conflict with XamarinShellPackage. Removing the extension and restarting VS did the trick for me.

Visual Studio 2012 Image Library missing. Where to get one?

The Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate (Update 1) is missing the Image Library zip contains a lot of default
windows application icons in many useful formats and sizes.
In Visual Studio 2010 the file was in \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\VS2010ImageLibrary\1033\VS2010ImageLibrary.zip, but there is no such file (VS2012ImageLibrary.zip) in new 2012 version.
What happens to that very popular (in my opinion) file? Is Microsoft going to attach the Library in Update 2? Or is it downloadable from different source?
Thank you for your help!
The download link for the latest 2012 Image Library is: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35825
Official Microsoft statement (here) posted on 2012-11-30 is that they are going to attach
that file in future update/release: "We appreciate your patience while we worked on getting the release reviewed and approved internally.".
I hope you all got what you need :)

Where are the Visual Studio 2012 SDK Samples?

I have just installed Visual Studio 2012 SDK and I cannot find any files.
The installer used more than 100 MBs on disk - but where are the files?
I searched the Start menu and found only links to web. The reference pages says that there are some source code samples, but where are these??
Seems that there is only VS 2010 SDK.
I found that the solution file is set to version 11.0 (i.e. VS 2012).

FxCop for .NET 4.0

I know Visual Studio 2010 has a new Code Analysis tool built in, but that is only for the premium and ultimate editions. From what I can see the latest FxCop supports .NET 3.5 SP1. Searching I wasn't able to find any references to an FxCop for .NET 4.0. Is there plans to continue to offer FxCop and for it to support .NET 4.0? Where would I find more information about it and download it?
The latest version of FXCop (v10) is bundled with the install of the latest Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .Net 4, released on 5/19/2010. From Microsoft - Full ISOs
Once the SDK is installed you can find the FXCop installer EXE under %programfiles%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Bin\FXCop (This assumes you kept the default install directory when installing the SDK).
Enjoy.
FxCop is now enhanced to work with .NET 4.0. You can find it here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/codeanalysis/archive/2010/07/26/fxcop-10-0-is-available.aspx
New version is marked with 10.0 just like Visual Studio.
I googled for FXcop 4.0 and found the following a helpful links:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vstscode/thread/74b2815a-626d-4aef-a08a-14c2fa72b506
Looks like its not yet out but FXCop support for .NET 4.0 is planned.
An alternative to FxCop rules would be to use the tool NDepend. This tool that lets write Code Rules over C# LINQ Queries what we call CQLinq, supports .NET v4 and v4.5, and is integrated in VS 2012, 2010, 2008. Disclaimer: I am one of the developers of the tool
More than 200 code rules are proposed by default. Customizing existing rules or creating your own rules is straightforward thanks to the C# LINQ syntax.
Rules can be verified live in Visual Studio and at Build Process time, in a generated HTML+javascript report.
