I'm trying to launch a project created by someone else in my local environment. I'm currently using the following products:
Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate version 10.0.40219.1 SP1 Rel
MVC 2
Windows 7 Ultimate
But when I double click on the .sln file I get the following error:
C:\Users...\Desktop\ContactManager\ContactManager\ContactManager.csproj : error : The project file 'C:\Users...\Desktop\ContactManager\ContactManager\ContactManager.csproj' cannot be opened.
The project type is not supported by this installation.
Please help me load my project. :)

Turns out that I just needed to install MVC version 3. I guess the project that I was trying to open is using MVC3 and my machine only had 2 as you can see in my environment list above. I'm glad I was able to fix this BUT give me a better error message for crying out loud. Sheesh. ;)

I've come across this before. In my case, I had installed Microsoft SQL Server and, more importantly, BIDS. Whenever I would open a project that was created in VS2008, the VS version selector would identify this as a 2008 project and BIDS would try to open it (and this error would occur). What I did as a work-around is I would right-click on the .sln file and use the "Open With" to select VS2010. If that also works for you, you can change your defaults for what opens .sln files.
Another way to test this is to open VS2010 and then use the "Open Solution" menu option to open your solution. If this method works, you know the issue is the default program that is opening your .sln files.
In my case project needs to have MVC3 so at first i checked i have MVC3 template in Visual Studio 2010 (service pack 1 installed). I downloaded MVC3 installer frowm following link:

I just download visual studio community to my pc. When i opened the vs-2015 and create new Console application project. i can't find it any where under the c# we installed templates or any templates.
Thinking about to uninstall and install again but this not the first time i uninstall and install this, i did installed and uninstall few time but still can't find the web Console Application template.

I had the same problem and found the solution on another site. Here are the steps that need to be performed:
Open a Visual Studio command window with admin privileges. This can be done from Windows search after clicking on the Windows button (or Start button - depending on the OS) located in the lower left corner. Make sure that you don't have any Visual Studio project open before proceeding.
Type in prompt in the search box and select "Developer Command Prompt". Right click on this and select run with admin privileges.
In the command window Enter:
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE
In the command window then enter:
devenv /installvstemplates
This worked for me and I was able to create a new console project after this.
With my version of VS 2015 community edition, upon install there was a Console Application (Package) template available, which I mistakenly thought was a Console Application template. This is not the case. It is a web console application project and I only discovered this after trying to access the File and Directory classes in System.IO from my code. The compiler kept on complaining:
Error CS0234 The type or namespace name 'Directory' does not exist in the namespace 'System.IO' (are you missing an assembly reference?)
MyProject.DNX Core 5.0 ...
It still complained after putting in a reference to System.IO and even after changing the offending line of code to:
string DataPath = System.IO.Directory.GetCurrentDirectory();
A big clue here is the reference to DNX Core 5.0, which is an optimized run-time for ASP apps. It was at that point that I discovered that the Console Application (Package) template was also listed under the New Project window Templates / Visual C# / Web.
So, For others that may happen to find this post and think you are using a standard Console Application template, but have errors like "CS0234 The type or namespace "name" does not exist in the namespace..." then you could be using a Console Application (Package) template - which is probably not what you want and should be replaced by a regular Console Application. If you don't see it in the New Project window under Templates / Visual C#, then you should follow the steps above to install it.

This is what my New Project window looks like after I performed the steps above:
Comparing this window with yours above, it appears to be somewhat different. Notice that "New Project" on my window is centered and for yours it is not. Also, at the bottom of the window yours has only Name, Location and Solution name, while my window adds a fourth item called Solution.
So, first thing, try clicking on Visual C# located in the left pane of your New Project window to see the templates available. Post that snapshot here. This can be done by selecting edit.
If you still don't see the Console Application template, then perhaps you downloaded a different version of Visual Studio 2015 than I did. So, here is the screen that pops up after selecting Help / About Microsoft Visual Studio on my system:
Compare this screen with yours and post a snapshot of your screen here. Also, what operating system are you using?

The Autodesk ObjectARX project wizards fail to create projects in visual studio professional. I only see in the status bar at the bottom that it has failed. How can I tell what's wrong?
I've checked the visual studio logs (using devenv.exe /log) with nothing reported. And I don't see any other logs. What else can I do?
I should add that there should be a ui, but nothing appears. It fails right away.

You should put the ObjectARX folders (inc, lib or so) to "C:\ObjectARX".
Another place is unacceptable.
I had the same problem because on wizard 2018 installation leave field "Registered Developer Symbol" empty. Then on using wizard you can change this symbol to any other.
Other name for ObjectARX directory allow successfully install wizard 2018 but then will be problem in project settings where this path hardcoded as c:\ObjectARX. So better use c:\ObjectARX.
Every time I try to build my solution in VS2013, nothing builds, no errors - But in the status bar it says: "This item does not support previewing"
I googled around a bit but have come up empty.
But if I right click on each project and select build it works fine.
Any ideas?

Steps to reproduce on my machine:
Right Click any project in solution: select build
Status bar displays Build successful
Right click solution select build
Status bar displays : "This item does not support previewing"
Perhaps it isnt related, but it sure does appear to be.
I was able to fix this... Somehow nothing was selected to build in the solution configuration. I right clicked on the solution, went to properties and then selected COnfiguration Properties and clicked the Build box for all the projects...
I have no idea how they became unchecked, only thing I can think of is a co-worker was trolling me.....
I've had this problem (i.e. debug not starting, and no error message) with Visual Studio 2015 in the following two cases:
after loading a solution that had previously been built with Visual Studio 2010
and also after using the "save as" function in Visual Studio 2015 to update a solution that had been started with Visual Studio 2010 (using Save as updates the solution file and sets the active Visual Studio version to 14 - i.e. VS 2015).
In both cases, deleting the bin and obj directories under the startup project fixed the problem. It's also worth closing visual studio and making sure that there are no {yourprojectname}.vshost.exe processes still running - if there are then kill them before running visual studio again. On that note, if you have multiple versions of visual studio on your machine, you should also check that you don't have the same solution open in the other version of visual studio at the same time (I've done that one myself).
One of the comments here suggests disabling the "enable visual studio hosted process" option. Don't do that if you can at all avoid it: you'll lose lots of debugging functionality (particularly in the area of being able to edit code while your solution is running).

Step 3. Download new latest Windows Software Development Kit

1: Add below lines in App.conf

right click on your project and select: Add Reference

I faced same issue with .aspx file. I just right click on the .aspx file and select open with (HTML Editor). You can choose any form the list.
I have come across the same issue for me, I have opened a project in VS 2010 and then when I open the same in VS 2015 then his error has occurred.
Solution:
By Closing the VS2010 project solution fixed the issue.
I have SQL Server 2012, SSIS, SSDT and Visual Studio 2010. I can create a new SSIS package and add a Script Task, but if I attempt to open the Script Editor for that Script Task I get the following error:

From my own investigation into this error, I found that Visual Studio Tools for Applications appears to be a part of MS Office 2007 and higher. This seemed like an odd dependency for to have, but I installed MS Office 2010 just for grins. It didn't change anything. What else should I try?
You will also get this error, if you are trying to debug a script task in VS 2010 and Run64BitRuntime is set to true. In order to debug, set it to false.
I was getting this error and nothing I came across corrected the problem until I logged off as my normal user and logged in as my local admin user. Once I logged in as an admin I could edit the script in my package. Once I logged back in as my regular user the edit script button worked for it too.
I assume it needed to register the assembly on the first launch and couldn't with my regular domain user.
I also got this same error when trying to open the Script Editor, but for a different reason. Not sure how it happened, but I had 3 copies of VSTA (different versions) installed. Once I removed all of them and re-installed SQL Server 2012, problem solved. Hope that helps.
For me the solution was:
close bids (I'm on 2008r2)
reopen
edit the script (it allowed me to edit it once after restarting bids)
delete all breakpoints
make a trivial change, such as adding a blank line
save
That solved it for me.
This worked for me without doing any kind uninstall.
My environment:
Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0 (2008)
Solution:
Go to cd "C:\program files (x86)\microsoft visual studio 9.0\common7\ide\"
Execute command vsta.exe /setup /hostid SSIS_ScriptTask. This will open VSTA with blank project. Let it open and then close it.
Execute command vsta.exe /setup /hostid SSIS_ScriptComponent. This will open VSTA with blank project. Let it open and then close it.
Open your solution/packages that contains the script task.
Click Edit button in Script task and it should open now. Just in case if it dont, I would suggest to keep the blank vsta of step 2 & 3 open and then click the Edit button in script task.
Took almost two hours and thankfully it worked for me. I did not have admin right to perform all that nasty uninstall and registry edit solutions.

Cannot show Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Applications editor.
Just follow the below solution:
Go to SQL Server Setup folder.
Inside that folder "redist".
Under that one more folder "VSTA".
Under VSTA folder "X86" and "X64"
Install the VSTA_RT30.
It works fine.
I figured out my problem this morning. When I uninstalled SQL Server 2012 (and the remnants of 2008 left behind when I upgraded last month) I also uninstalled 3 packages that were actually part of Visual Studio 2010. Had I not done this, a reinstallation of SQL Server 2012 would probably have done the trick, but instead I found new errors. When I reinstalled these 3 packages from the Visual Studio 2010 distribution media, everything started working.
The 3 packages in question were:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Data-tier Application Project
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Data-tier Application Framework
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Transact-SQL Language Service
I'm trying to open a silverlight project in Visual Studio 2008 and getting this error.
The project type is not supported by this installation.
Let me tell you I did installed:
VS2008
SP1
Silverlight Tools 3
Silverlight SDK
Silverlight
And they were installed in the sequence they are mentioned here. Still I'm getting the same error.
Adding some more details which might be helpful in identifying the cause:
When I try to create a new silverlight project it gives me error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". And shows "...project creation failed."
I tried unistalling all of the things and installing them again. It really took a lot of time but didn't solved my problem.
Any help appreciated.
Open the project.csproj file with another editor, delete whatever you find between
<ProjectTypeGuids></ProjectTypeGuids>
I've had the same error when I tried to open a solution which required VB.NET, despite everything (to my knowledge) being C#.

Do you know who the silverlight project was created by? If so, then contact them and ask them if they used VS 2008 or if they used VS 2010 beta 1/2 (VS 2010 has a lot more and better support for silverlight so it's probable)
If they used VS 2010, then just go to the microsoft website and download you a copy... it's free(right now)
(and if you'll be doing much silverlight development, I'd recommend downloading it anyway. It has code completion for XAML!)
