Upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 throws a build error - visual-studio

Recently upgraded to VS 2010 from 2008, the previously built solutions are throwing the following error.
Error 14 Encountered multiple versions of the assembly with GUID 'a5851ea0-2f9a-40b2-a73a-cd7db32f09c5'. Try pre-importing one of these assemblies
I tried re-installing VS 2010 and it didnot help. Any ideas?

Is it the VS 2010 application itself crashing, or does it not like your solution? Can you open VS 2010 by itself? If so, it sounds like it doesn't like some of your references in one or more of your projects. Check the project references. If that doesn't work, start removing projects until you find the offending one.

This may happen, if you copy-paste-renamed a project file to re-use its settings but didn't changed the project GUID of it. Also could be a project migration error, anyway you will have to manually edit the project file and remove the duplicate references if the project fails to load because of the error.

I had the same issue when migrating 2008 -> 2013.
It was caused that we use same linked AssemblyInfo.cs for all projects in solution.
And only for the assembly that used some COM objects (MSMQ) it seems that it starts looking on referenced assemblies GUID and two of them from our solution...
So when I provide individual AssemblyInfo.cs for projects with unique GUIDs it start working.

Try to remove the references to the debug folder.
In Visual Studio right click on Project
Select Properties
Select the references tab.
Check to see if any of the references are from the obj\Debug folder and remove them.

Unity keeps removing log4net from my Visual Studio project

I tried to install log4net for use in my Unity project with the following command :
Install-Package Unity.log4net
However, when I go back to the editor, then back to Visual Studio again, the log4net reference is removed, just like the Unity Editor had regenerated the project or something like that. The log4net reference no longer appears in the reference list and thus the log4net namespace can no longer be found.
I'm using Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition.
Has anyone experienced that and found a solution ? Thanks !
It seems like one cannot freely add references to a Unity project since Unity has to know about them. DLLs should be placed in a folder of the project called Plugins and then it works.
However it's weird that people are telling to use nuget packages. I'm assuming that must work somehow, but I don't know how. The solution above is dirty, but at least it works.
Unity projects require a special process to add NuGet packages. This is because when you open a project in Unity, its Visual Studio project files are regenerated, undoing necessary configurations. Namespace/Assembly errors in "Views" section in Visual Studio 2017

I have a .Net Core application that I used to develop on "back in the days of Visual Studio 2015". I have now moved on to Visual Studio 2017 and back to this project and I have a need to rename the project. I started following numerous guides online on how to rename a Visual Studio project, however none of them seems to support .Net Core and Visual Studio 2017. I believe it is important to mention that the only part of my project that complains about the namespace is the "Views" section, and it only seems to refer to files that have been created/edited recently.
After doing the following, I have still not found a solution:
Rename Solution in solution explorer.
Rename project in solution explorer.
Changing Assembly name in "Project" -> " Properties".
Changing Default namespace in "Project" -> " Properties".
Going to Program.cs and changing namespace using "Right-click" -> "Rename" -> "Rename all occurances".
Adding "#using " in _ViewImports.cshtml (complains about missing namespace here as well).
I am getting desperate as I feel like I have tried everything and nothing seems to works.
I have recently renamed my project from MobileFront to MSPFrontend and even if I change the "#using" statements inside my _ViewImports.cshtml back to MobileFront it still complains.
I am hoping that I am not the first one to encounter this tedious problem.
EDIT
I noticed the errors occured only when the files were open. I don't know if this is important to know of whether it has some importance for finding the solution.
I ended up downloading Microsoft.AspNetCore version 1.1.1 through NuGet. After doing that I created a completely new project and reopened my original project. That solved the problem. All of a sudden my project could find all namespaces and assemblies.

file not found exception running specflow test with codedui in visualstudio 2013

I've been searching all morning for an answer online to this and I have tried a lot of the suggestions though all solutions seem to be for visual studio 2010 and I am running 2013 premium edition, I can't see anyone with the same problem.
I have premium VS 2013, I installed SpecFlow v1.9 through the extension manager and added the SpecFlow nuget package. I have created a CodedUI test project and added a feature file, some recorded codedui steps and a stepdef file. Nothing is complaining and it all looks like it should work. I have added :
<unitTestProvider name="MsTest"/>
to my App.config so I can run it from the test explorer in visual studio. I eventually want to run the tests via MTM but I will deal with that when I get this to work!
I have built and it is all happy so I go to test explorer and I can see my test so I right click, run the test. It fails with the following error, it does get to my Given step when I debug and falls over trying to open my application.
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UITest.WindowsStoreUtility, Version=12.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF.
To enable assembly bind failure logging, set the registry value [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fusion!EnableLog] (DWORD) to 1.
Note: There is some performance penalty associated with assembly bind failure logging.
To turn this feature off, remove the registry value [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fusion!EnableLog].
I can not find the reference above when I have looked to add it to my project references, there is a similar one but it breaks some of my other references when I add it. I also had a look at my registry files and the path it is referring to does not exist for me to edit it. From what I have read codedui doesn't work nicely with specflow without a dll file. All references to this fix seem to be for vs 2010 and require that I copy a dll to my specflow source folder. I installed specflow from visual studio so I don't have a program files folder for it so I came to a bit of a sticking point with that solution.
Does anyone have specflow working with visual studio 2013 and a codedui test project? Am I missing a set up step? Or is this genuinely to do with my registry files / references. The error is confusing as I don't see why it is trying to find that reference especially when I can't find that reference anywhere when I try to find it manually. I'd be interested to know if you have had this error and managed to resolve it or if you could explain your set up steps so I can check I did not miss anything.

I believe you might be missing references to some of the required dlls. I just finished testing a test created using a Specflow, codedUI test project on my MS Visual Studio 2013 ultimate and it worked just fine.
Here are the steps which I followed:
Created a class library project.
Added reference to Specflow 1.9 from Extensions and Updates.
Added reference to Specflow CodedUI Attribute Generator (Install-Package SpecFlow.CodedUI -Version 1.0.0.23).
Added references to required libraries required for CodedUI and Test Tools to the project. See below the references I added.
Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.CodedUITestFramework
Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.UnitTestFramework
Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UITest.Common
Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UITest.Extension

Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UITesting
Added a separate CodedUI project to solution and added references of this project to the class library project.
Create a new Specflow feature file with some test and create step for it in step definition and reference to the function you created or recorded in the CodedUI project in the step definition.
Run the Specflow test from Test Explorer. It should work fine.
Note: The above steps should work just fine if you will create CodedUI project instead of a Class library project.
Mark the test class with the CodedUITest attribute.
I had this exact error message even though I had all the .dll's referenced correctly.
The solution for me was to regenerate the feature files.
(right click project and select "regenerate feature files")

I came across the same issue today, not with specflow but 2013 build controller and agent and codedui tests.

Convert SharePoint 2010 Solution to 2013 and Visual Studio 2012

I am trying to convert a SharePoint 2010 solution (custom web parts, content types, lists, event receivers, etc.) developed in Visual Studio 2010 to SharePoint 2013 and Visual Studio 2012. When I open the project in VS 2012, it converts a couple of the project files but won't compile because of reference issues.
I copied the DLLs (mostly Microsoft.SharePoint..., although I needed to copy the Microsoft.Office.SecureStoreService.dll too) that were causing issues from my 2010 server to the 2013 server and fixed the references. However, the Microsoft.Office.SecureStoreService.dll still gives me compiler errors claiming "Error 203 The type or namespace name 'Office' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft' (are you missing an assembly reference?)" when visual studio has no problem with the namespace and finds the SecureStoreProvider class inside it just fine.
I've also tried to change the target framework from 3.5 to 4 and only see "Install other frameworks..." in the target framework dropdown.
I'm sure that others have dealt with this, but have been unsuccessful in framing the right google search query. I'm relatively new to SharePoint in general and any help would be appreciated.

I was able to get my solution upgraded from a 2010 project to 2013 using the following. Note that this will update your solution to use the new 2013 API. It is possible to update just the project file but still run in 2010 mode.
First edit your .csproj file (for c#).
Modify the target framework to this:
<TargetFrameworkVersion>v4.5</TargetFrameworkVersion>
Add this a node for the office version, I put mine directly below the TargetFrameworkVersion tag
<TargetOfficeVersion>15.0</TargetOfficeVersion>
Update references
Reload the project and update your referenced assemblies. If you haven't specified a specific version they should already be referencing the v15 (SharePoint 2013) assemblies.
Do a find replace for 14.0.0.0 to 15.0.0.0. This updates any references on your pages, layouts, and master pages to the v15 assemblies.
Change calls
Change any calls to SPUtility.GetGenericSetupPath() to SPUtility.GetVersionedGenericSetupPath()
Check each file to do a check for any hive references. You'll need to add a /15/ to these. EG: _layouts/ to _layouts/15/
Open the package "folder" in visual studio then update the properties for that package to use version 15.
Clean up
Finally do a compile clean up any missed items. Deploy your solution and make sure to test thoroughly.

Why do I get "An error occurred while validating. HRESULT = '80004005'" when building a setup project?

Why do I get the following error when building a setup project?
An error occurred while validating. HRESULT = '80004005'
One project in solution had ToolsVersion="4.0" (in .csproj file), changed it to ToolsVersion="3.5" and setup project builds fine.
Both of the reasons I found are already in other answers, but they are in separate answers and not fully explained. So, hopefully this will combine the possibilities and give good means of debugging each. :)
Common Reason
My problem was not a dependency error. However, that does seem to be the common reason. So, basically, you need to check your MSI file and make sure that all dependencies are still valid. Probably the best blog response on how you can easily resolve this if it is a dependency issue is An error occurred while validating. HRESULT = '80004005'.

Follow steps below to troubleshoot.
If you have multiple project outputs in your solution, identify the project that is giving the problem. You can do that by removing one project at a time from the Setup Project(S) until error goes away.
Once project is identified, identify the reference that could be giving the problem.
Check if the project(A) is referencing to a project that has been removed from solution. - Remove such references if any.
Check if the Project(A) is referencing to a project that was moved to a diffenrent physical location after it was added as a reference. - Remove and add such references.
Rebuild setup project after fixing the reference accordingly to see if error goes away.
Alternative Reason
My problem had to do with Visual Studio versioning, however. So, if your dependencies are valid and you still are getting this problem, then you resolve this if it is a problem with VS2010 .
Basically, if you run MSBuild and see this warning:
Project file contains ToolsVersion="4.0", which is not supported by
this version of MSBuild. Treating the project as if it had
ToolsVersion="3.5"
Then the problem is Visual Studio versioning. This means that one project was opened or created in Visual Studio 2010 and then saved or added to an existing 3.5 solution. I simply searched all files in my project for ToolsVersion="4.0" and found the offending .csproj file, opened it in a text editor and manually changed the 4.0 to a 3.5.
This error is related to a dependency error. I removed all references to my primary output project and added them again. It now compiles OK!
I ran up against this issue today. The solution in my case? Restart Visual Studio 2008.
In my case my solution (VS2008) had a project that was also referenced from another solution (VS2010). In the VS2010 solution I had upgraded the project to .NET 4.0. When I later realized the project was also used in another solution I downgraded it to .NET 3.5. For some reason everything seemed to be changed correctly in the csproj file except one place which is mentioned here: Error in setup project HRESULT = '80004005'
I know this is already solved somewhere else but I wanted to shed some light on this from another problem angle.
While simply removing and re-adding the project dependencies will work in many cases, it is important to note that:
The error message "An error occurred while validating. HRESULT=80004005."
usually happens when project is referenced to the other project which is
not added into the currect [sic] solution. Setup project only supports
dependency projects within same solution.1
I have spent enormous time on this one myself, though none of the above worked. But I have found another solution with a registry hack, you need to add a new DWORD (EnableOutOfProcBuild) value of (0) to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0_Config\MSBuild\EnableOutOfProcBuild

In my case I had installed Visual Studio 2010 alongside Visual Studio 2008. My setup project, when opened in Visual Studio 2008 gave the same error, but was OK in Visual Studio 2010.
If copied to another machine that did not have Visual Studio 2010, but did have Visual Studio 2008, then it would compile.
I installed Visual Studio 2010 and converted the solutions to that version. Because of performance issues I changed my solutions back to Visual Studio 2008. Everything was better now but I got an error when I tried to compile the setup project. I realized that I had a Visual Studio 2010 Test Project in my solution so all I had to do was unload the Test Project and Build the setup project again.
Summary: unload any Visual Studio 2010 project in solution.

I know this is kinda old news, but my particular issue and solution are not specifically stated here (as far as I can tell - if I missed it, I apologize).
I had same problem. It would not compile my project, but had no errors. All I could see was "Build Failed". I opened up the "Output" file (Click View--> Output on menu), and it told me exactly which reference (in my case a .dll) was causing the problem.
I deleted and recreated the reference and it changed the reference name from Microsoft.Office.Core (which was appearently only a 32 bit version) to "OFFICE". Then everything worked great. -- Make sure to make a note of the path to the file you are referencing in the properties window... My new path was exactly the same, but the reference name changed anyway.... still scratching my head on that one...
So the moral of the story is... When you get no errors and your build fails, check the "Output" tab and it might help.
I read this answer from another post on Stack Overflow, and it has worked for me.
Open your setup project file (.vdproj) in Notepad (or any other text editor). Delete these lines at a beginning of the .vdproj file:
"SccProjectName" = "8:"
"SccLocalPath" = "8:"
"SccAuxPath" = "8:"
"SccProvider" = "8:"
Build again - the error is gone. That error didn't stop me from deploying, building, debugging (or anyting) my project; it just annoyed me. And it came on even if I set all projects to be build in a current configuration and the setup project not to.
