But seems there should be better solution, isn't it?
There are special global variables (their names start with $) that contain results of the last regexp match:
r = /(.+)_path/
# $1 - the n-th group of the last successful match (may be > 1)
puts $1 if r.match('home_path')
# => home
# $& - the string matched by the last successful match
puts $& if r.match('home_path')
# => home_path
You can find full list of predefined global variables here.
Note, that in the examples above puts won't be executed at all if you pass a string that doesn't match the regexp.
And speaking about general case you can always put assignment into condition itself:
if m = /(.+)_path/.match('home_path')
puts m[0]
end
Though, many people don't like that as it makes code less readable and gives a good opportunity for confusing = and ==.
My personal favorite (w/ 1.9+) is some variation of:
if /(?<prefix>.+)_path/ =~ "home_path"
puts prefix
end
If you really want a one-liner: puts /(?<prefix>.+)_path/ =~ 'home_path' ? prefix : false

From the docs: If a block is given, invoke the block with MatchData if match succeed.

I am trying to write a regex replace for this. I tried this,

However, my second and third test cases fail because it searches till the end. It would help if the answer could also do the case insensitivity.

As per my original comments, you can use the pattern as shown below. If you want a really small performance gain, you can remove one step in the regex by using the second pattern instead. If you're especially concerned with performance, the last one performs even quicker.

When using regex you should make sure to use unique strings like http:\\ or better http:\\[SOMETHING].[AT_LEAST_TWO_CHARS][MAYBE_A_SLASH] and so on...

It lets you match a part of a string with regex, and then substitute just that part with another string. Naturally, in place of regex, you can just use a specific string.
Example:
"user#gmail.com".gsub(/#gmail/, '#googlemail')
is equal to
user#googlemail.com
In my example I used #gmail and #googlemail instead of just gmail and googlemail. The reason for this is to make sure it's not an account with gmail in the name. It's unlikely, but could happen.
Don't match the .com either, as that can change depending on where the user's email is.
Assuming googlemail.com and gmail.com are the only two possibilities, you can use sub to replace a pattern with given replacement:

String has a neat trick up it's sleeve in the form of String#[]:

Allowing lookups to be passed to your method makes it more reusable but you could just as easily have that hash inside of the method itself.

The following returns the index of the first duplicate character:

I don't believe we can use a regex for this (but would love to be proved wrong). I would use the method suggested in a comment by #DaveNewton:

This regex is fine, but produces the warning, "regular expression has redundant nested repeat operator '*'". You can disregard the warning or suppress it by doing something clunky, like:
r = /([^#{0.chr}]).*?\K\1/
where ([^#{0.chr}]) means "match any character other than 0.chr in capture group 1".
Note that a positive lookbehind cannot be used here, as they cannot contain variable-length matches (i.e., .*).
You could probably make your string an array and use detect. This should return the first char where the count is > 1.

In Ruby regular expressions I would like to use gsub to replace a last occurrence of a grouping, if it occurs, otherwise, perform a replacement anyways at a default location. I am trying to replace the last occurrence of a number in the 40s (40...49). I have the following regular expression, which is correctly capturing the grouping I would like in '\3':

The Regexp '(mms:\/\/{1}[a-zA-Z\.\d\/\w-]+)' can be refactored a little bit. Using the %rXX notation, you can create regular expressions without the need for so many backslashes, where X is any matching character, such as ( and ) or in the example above, | |.
This character class [a-zA-Z\.\d\/\w-] (read: A to Z, case insensitive, the period character, 0 to 9, a forward slash, any word character, or a dash) is a little redundant. \w denotes "word characters", i.e. A-Za-z0-9 and underscore. Since you specify \w as a positive match, A-Za-z and \d are redundant.
Using those 2 cleanups, the Regexp can be changed into this: %r|(mms://{1}[\w\./-]+)|
If you'd like to avoid the weird m = nil scoping sorcery, this will also work, but is less idiomatic:
open("channels.xml").each do |line|
m = line.match(%r|(mms://{1}[\w\./-]+)|) and puts m
end
or the longer, but more readable version:
open("channels.xml").each do |line|
if m = line.match(%r|(mms://{1}[\w\./-]+)|)
puts m
end

One very easy to read approach is just to store the result of the match, then only print if there's a match:

Personally, I would probably just use the POSIX grep command. But there is Enumerable#grep in Ruby, too:

Alternatively, you could use some of Ruby's file and line processing magic that it inherited from Perl. If you pass the -p flag to the Ruby interpreter, it will assume that the script you pass in is wrapped with while gets; ...; end and at the end of each loop it will print the current line. You can then use the $_ special variable to access the current line and use the next keyword to skip iteration of the loop if you don't want the line printed:
ruby -pe 'next unless $_ =~ %r|mms://{1}[\w\./-]+|' channels.xml
