I have created two seperate pages for an old Joomla 1:0 system
The seo friendly option is unavailable and for various reasons I cant touch/update the joomla system
The chief executive wants to create a newletter with a specific url
So Firstly I need to create this subdomain
www.mydomain.co.uk/mysports to measure the success rate of the mail campaign
I also need to link that subdomain domain to the content page below
http://www.mydomain.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=159&Itemid=278
What would you say are the best options for doing this in Joomla

when you say "sub-domain" you probably mean "folder" or "sub-folder", not sub-domain.
if I'm correct about assumption #1 then what you want to do is easy: create a folder "mysports" under Joomla home. inside this folder create the following php file (call it "index.php"):

and you're good to go.

I am creating a website using Joomla 3 CMS. I have a requirement from my client that i need to change the existing page url extension from .html to .htm. As this website is redesign of a existing website the old links have .htm extension.
Open ../libraries/cms/router/site.php
Go to line number 144
And change

If you don't want to edit core files, and that is certainly not advised for sake of future upgrades. Your best solution is using a custom component for managing Joomla's SEF URLs, for example: sh404SEF (Paid) or JoomSEF (Free).
Check out http://extensions.joomla.org/category/site-management/sef for others.
Never ever edit Joomla Core files, otherwise when you upgrade Joomla, all your changes will be gone.
As #Alexxandar said; use SEO/SEF components for your needs. I recommend to use MijoSEF (Free or Paid)
Go to global configuration and remove the l from the suffix.
THis is a Joomla configuration question and a standard joomla configuration (not programming) option.
Now the one thing you will have to worry about is that if there are any old links to the htm pages. FOr this you will probably want to use the built in redirect component. Turn on the redirect plugin and then if you have a small number of pages you can just set up the redirection by hand. If you have more pages you may want to write the sql to create a bunch of redirects. Or you might want to make your own plugin to permanently redirect the old to the new.
I have just moved a magento site from one domain to the new one. Steps so far...
Backup the database and restore the database on the new domain. Change the core_config_base table for secure and unsecure base urls
Upload source files
Update the local.xml with new database information
Cleared cache
Now I can go to the site and everything is showing up fine on the new domain. The main navigation is working as it should. When I click on a product, however, it goes to the old domain. Does anyone know why this might be happening?
Can you verify the links when you hover products are correct or in correct consistently? Is old base URL in all links I mean. Also check htaccess file for any directives containing the old domain. Also check to make sure no custom URL rewrites exist in the Magento admin Catalog → URL Rewrite Management .Once you verify htaccess or custom URL rewrites in Magento admin are not causing it, I can suggest other procedures to fix.
Probably your previous developer didn't follow all Magento standards while coding.
My suggestion is download your code and search for strings that equates to your previous domain.Also check in data base, as use of CMS blocks too might result in previous domain links.
Btw make sure you delete all caches
Rm -rf var/cache/*
Verify base URL and secure URL are correct in all scopes via drop down in Magento system configuration.
I`ve been using joomla from past 2 years. As joomla is a very popular CMS for php lovers so hackers are always trying to deface the website in joomla. Anyone can easily detect the website is using on joomla or any other programming language by using wappanalyzer software. In joomla we can access the administrator panel by typing
http://phalana.com/administrator.
So my question is how to change the /administrator to something else so that hackers will not get to the administrator panel. So far i've seen the number of extensions in official joomla directory But still something is lacking on it.Can anyone help me to change the administrator path.
Changing /administrator is a very bad idea for a lot of reasons top amongst, ironically, is security. Apart from that it:
breaks lots of components
cuts you off from easy application of security updates
the effects of renaming are unknown from a security point of view
The best way to secure Joomla's /administrator area is to follow some simple steps...
Add realm authentication to the /administrator directory that way unless you hacker manages to figure out the username and password they're stumped.
Use an extension like JSecure or Akeeba's Admin tools (both allow your to set a "secret word" on the administrator URL) or check the extensions already available in the Login Protection section of the Joomla! Extension directory (called JED for short). N.B. I personally like Admin tools the most, with the /administrator?secreword, their application firewall and the .htaccess maker.

Personally we do all of these things and a bit more... as we keep telling people.
You can protect or hide your /administrator directory by creating an alternative directory wich sets a cookie that is sent to the http header in the request. That cookie will be validated from the index.php file at the /administator directory, if is not validated (when an unauthorized user wants to detect if your site is Joomla based by the known /administrator directory), then it will be redirected to the root directory for your site.
These are the steps.
*create an alternative /administrator directory ie: /admins_place
*inside /admins_place, create an index.php with the following code

I have to do some modifications online on my website, and I don't want the users to see those pages. So I renamed index.php to index_orig.php and I put another index.html that show a message (WebSite under construction) for my users.
My problem is that I want to access online to the rest of my pages to check the modifications until satisfaction, but when I try to access the rest of the pages by their whole URL (404 error is shown).
Example : www.mywebsite.com/floder1/pagetarget.php.
Put back index.php.
In your global configuration, set the site to offline and put up a message and a logo etc (assuming you are on 2.5 or 3). You'll be able to login and see the site.
Please keep in mind that in a database driven cms there are not pages in the way that you would think of them in a static html site. Everything gets pushed into the index.php of your template file.
Update the directory default document on whatever webserver you are using. Also update any rewrite rules that may be pointing to index.php
Our corporate website already is in place written in "long-hand" PHP. Since we plan to rebuild the site some time in 2011, I don't want to recode it in CodeIgniter (MVC) until we begin the redesign.
However, there are some additions we are making now (i.e., a newsroom/rss feed, a jobs post, etc) that I could add to the site as "modules" until the new design is created in CodeIgniter.
My question -- can I place a CI2 "application" in a folder at the root of my existing site and create my modules in CodeIgniter. For example, a stand-alone CI2 site named news would live in a folder at the root and would be called like www.company.com/news?

Yes you can...
anything else? ;)
All joking aside, you could probably stick it into something like /ci/ and use .htaccess to make URL rewriting, and point your sites /news --> /ci/news/etc;
That way you have 1 single CI instance, and you just point links to the instance:
/news => /ci/news/view/
/form => /ci/form/process/1
etc; number of ways to do it.
