How to use Gedit to compile C program on Mac OS? - macos

Im a c program student.
right now I am using VirtualBox to run Linux(ubuntu with school preset. it already had gedit, runC, gcc, valgrind)
Now i wanna do c programming on my Mac os,
My question is how do i install gcc ,valgrind,runC in order to use the MAC gedit ro run C programs?
right now I only have gedit on my MAC OS.
And is runC a default gedit plugin or I have to download by myself?

XCode, the developer environment for MacOS comes free, but not installed by default. It is much better. You can get it by going to the Apple Developer site. The most current version requires paying for access to the bleeding edge (pre-release). You want the public (2nd most recent) version.

Installer for GNAT 2018 community version for x86-64 Mac OS X does not complete

The installer runs for a while and many files get installed but it hangs. There is a choice of installing the GNAT compiler tool chain, SPARK tool set and GPS development environment. I've tried it with just the compiler and with all three. Both ways do not complete. Too abort the installer I need to do a force quit.
I have the latest update to MAC OS X installed, plenty of free disk space and memory. I'm trying to install it on MAC Book Pro with touch bar.
I had this issue, and it came up on the GNAT-OSX mailing list, 10 June. (Firefox complains about that site’s security configuration, by the way).
The solution (for Pascal on the list, and for me) was to install with the 'detailed view' off.

How to install XCode 9 GM on MacOS Sierra 10.12?

I actually built a Hackintosh to learn programming with Xcode. It runs on my Asus X555LA laptop. I downloaded the latest Xcode 9 GM build from the Apple Site (not from App store). After extracting, when I tried to install, it shows "You can't use this version of the application "Xcode" with this version of macOS; You have macOS 10.12. The application requires macOS 10.12.6 or later".
Is there any tweak to make it run on my Sierra 10.12 itself? I can't really think about upgrading the macOS version as it's a Hackintosh. I followed this guide to install macOS on my Asus laptop.
Xcode requires latest macOS, you have no choice, you need to upgrade the macOS version on your Hackintosh. Or better: Reinstall macOS in a recommended way on your PC, if you're doing Hackintosh... :)
The guide you linked is very poor... Never use premade install images, because these have been modified in an uncertain way, and you don't want to install a premade undocumented mess to your computer. It might be packed with threats, malwares, spy tools and so on.. It's the worst thing I can imagine in security aspect to install an OS image from uncertain source.
Also, there is no universal macOS installer for PCs - even though many are trying to find a way to create it: it's a bad idea and it will never succeed because there are so many PC parts, millions of differently built computers..
The only way to create a stable fully functional Hackintosh is to know your hardware and create an installer flash drive for that specific PC. First you have to download the latest macOS Sierra from AppStore, this is the only source that you can trust, because it's downloading from Apple's servers. Then install a small program, called Clover bootloader to the flash drive to make it bootable.
This is the only full and up to date guide for PC laptops. If you have questions, register to the linked site and start a new forum thread posting your questions. They will help you but please read this guide at least 3-4 times carefully because everything is described here.

Haskell for Mac (El Capitan)

I'm trying to decide what haskell installation is more appropriate for a Mac running El Capitan.
It seems there are at least two alternatives:
Install the haskell platform as indicated in https://www.haskell.org/platform/
Install the haskell platform as indicated in https://ghcformacosx.github.io/
What is the difference between the two distributions?
Will I be able to use Xcode as an Haskell IDE?
The main differences I see are:
Haskell for Mac OSX:
is relocatable
comes with stack pre-built
Haskell Platform:
installs in /usr/local/bin (requires root access)
comes with more pre-compiled libraries
comes with the programs happy and alex pre-built
Neither comes with explicit support for using Xcode as an IDE. Usually one uses Emacs or Atom or Vi to develop Haskell programs.

I have been using RapidSVN on a Linux machine for the past few years - it has become an excellent tool for managing my source.
Yesterday my trusty Linux laptop had a couple of strokes so I decided it was time to replace it. Today I went out and purchased a new Mac Book Pro with the flashy display and solid state drives.
Then I went hunting for an SVN tool to run on Mac. I found that RapidSVN will run on a Mac as it was developed using wxWidgets (cross platform windowing).
So, I needed to install wxWidgets, however this doesn't come as an executable so I had to download the tar ball. To compile I realised I don't have a compiler installed yet... so, install Xcode 4.4, then learn that doesn't install a compiler either... find the Xcode preference to install the command line tools (compiler).
So, now I have Xcode installed, a gcc compiler, and tracking back up it comes to wxWidgets. It takes a little working out but I manage to extract the files into a directory in my home folder, (following instructions of course), and from the 'build' folder I run the ../configure command (which seems to work) and then the 'make' command which fails:

A dismal day in the land of computers. I am now stuck for the next 5-6 years on a computer that will never be able to compile anything using wxWidgets - I rather feel like taking it back to Apple and getting my money back.
So where to from here? Is there a binary version of wxWidgets available? Is there a binary version of RapidSVN available? Should I downgrade to OSX 10.x something less than I am currently on? Should I upgrade to unstable wxWidgets?
This is an interesting but not very understandable read. What exactly are you trying to achieve? If you're looking to use the best available version of wxWidgets under OS X, get 2.9.4 or the current svn version and build it using the Xcode version you have already with Cocoa support. If you absolutely need to continue to use Carbon (why?), either install Xcode 3, available from Apple, or get 10.6 (or 10.5) SDK in some other way and pass it as the SDK to use to configure using --with-macosx-sdk option as explained in the documentation.
VZ is right. If you need to use wxWidgets 2.8 on OS X (and there are legitimate reasons for needing to do so), get the 10.6 SDK. Copy it alongside the already installed 10.7 and/or 10.8 , and select it in the project/target's build settings.
From here I have given up trying to compile anything on my current OSX. I am not going to downgrade or install multiple versions of different libraries in order to satisfy the lack of support for the latest current stable versions.
From here I will download and install binaries only.
I have Mac OSX Lion and just did this:
brew install wxmac
and was able to get through the install with no issues.

Writing code for a Mac using Lazarus

I have done a little work on lazarus' free pascal. So when a client asked me to write an application for a mac, after the initial, "it can't be done" stage. (followed by an asp.net maybe stage) i thought about writing it using lazarus.
Question is. I have only a virtual machine running mac OSX, this means that i do not really want to develop on the mac. However, i just cannot seem to get the applications that i have written in lazarus on windows to work on the mac. I have tried the deployment using the Lazarus Wiki and the MACOS folder is empty and so when i put it on the mac it doesn't run the application.
What is the best way of doing this or am i barking up the wrong tree?
It seems you want to do cross-compiling, which is theoretically possible, but may not be practical, for the reasons mentioned by Marco above.
As an alternative, you could install XCode, FreePascal, and Lazarus on a MacOX machine. You could still do your development and some testing on Windows/Linux. When you hit a certain milestone, you can copy your source code to the Mac and compile your application to test and give to the user.
Even if it were possible to easily cross-compile, there some minor differences between platforms, so (especially if it's a GUI app), you would want to test it on an actual MacOS box before giving it to the client.
I've taken the route described by Noah - and I was incredibly surprised that after about three weeks development on Windows, it took about 10 minutes to get the application running on the Mac.
My route was to install Xcode 4.3 on an old Mac Mini running snow leopard, then install Lazarus using the fink version as described here. This took a while but was done in an evening.
Then I just copied my folder across to the Mac, opened the lpi on the Mac, compiled it. It failed so I removed a windows references, recompiled, and it was working. I was truly amazed.
What linker and assembler do you use to generate binaries? To my best knowledge the linker for recent OS X versions is not available in source.
Afaik what you want (crosscompiling to Mac) is not possible for recent versions (and I've done it for PowerPC myself in the past).
The easiest is to use the Unix "file" command on the binary to see what is generated, and make sure it reads something with "MachO" in it. Easiest is if you have a Linux install (where this command is pretty standard), but versions can be found for windows too (cygwin, mingw and 3rd party)
