I have strange problem with installation of SQL Server 2008 R2. I am trying to install on Windows 7 x64 OS and there should be step named "Instance configuration". It's missed in my setup, after installation SQL services exist in system but there is no instance of server. Image of SQL Server 2008 R2 I downloaded from MSDN. I tried with Enterprise and Developer version with same result. Has anyone similar problem? What could cause that? I looked for some solution in web, I tried to uninstall all SQL items from 'Add/Remove Programs' and to clear registry - doesn't help. I will be very grateful for any tips.

I've had a number of strange issues with SQL Server 2008 including that.
In my case it was on Windows Server 2008 x64 where I had the issues but I guess it would be a similar thing.
In my case it depended on my user rights, if I logged on with my credentials even though I am part of the Administrators group I had a number of different issues.
When loggin in as the built in Administrator it worked fine.
Launching installer as "Administrator" worked for me.

I am trying to install ODAC 18c Release 1 (18.3.0.0.0) and when I click on the Setup.exe it shows the black screen(command prompt ) and there after nothing is coming. The universal Installer is not at all loading.
Currently I am using Windows 10 Enterprise edition ,
VS 2015 , 2017 Professional editions are installed.
My Machine is 64 bit
Other than the above I have installed ODTwithODAC1120320_32bit also in my system.
No idea why the installer is crashing.
I could see a prerequisite like
Access to an Oracle Database Server (Oracle 11g Release 2 or later)
is needed for the instillation in installation guide. In fact my oracle database server is located in some other place and we are accessing that from my location , so I need only client for accessing that. I am not sure what they meant by

Do I need to install the Oracle database 11g+ ?? Do the crashing issue is because of some other reasons ?
Can someone help me to resolve this ?
Methods I have tried so far :
Open the install folder directly and click on the oui.exe directly
Disconnect internet and try to install
Run the installation exe in elevated rights mode
Kill the java.exe from task manager and try to install
None of the above methods are working.
And finally I found the reason.
I didn't have a _JAVA_OPTIONS in the system variables. I have added that and run the installer as run as administrator.
The variable value should be -Xmx512M
This one drives me crazy, I am installing Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Windows 64 bit version. Because Express edition doesn't work on win7.

In total there are 2 files, using 7zip I have unzipped them in one folder. Folder is called 'database' containing:

install
response
stage
setup
welcome
I double clicked on setup, passed installation option where they ask me to provide email address to be informed of security issues. I selected 'Create and configure a database'. And in the next step where they ask for type of installation I chose 'Desktop Class'. After I clicked on 'Next' the installer just closes and installation is stopped..
Any idea what might be the cause? I have the rights, I am using a clean new laptop, WIN7 64 bit, installed JDK.
Oracle 11G Express Edition is officially available on 64-bit versions of Windows (Finally!).

If you purpose is some developing/testing/learning why not use pre-built Oracle VM images? You just need to install Virualbox and download the image file.

I have a new dev machine, and I need to support legacy SSIS packages. The new machine is Windows 8 64 bit with a SSD primary drive (C:) and a regular HDD for data (D:). On it, I have installed BIDS 2008 R2 (and all the tricks to get it to work with TFS2010), as well as VS2010, ODAC 32 bit and 64 bit (I think??), Oracle Client (SQLDeveloper).
I can get the following to connect just fine to an Oracle database:
VS2010 with MSDAORA
VS2010 with ODAC
VS2010 with ADO.NET
Test connection using .udl file with Oracle OLE DB Provider (MS provider does not show up as an option here)
SQLDeveloper (Oracle's Client Tool)
What I CAN'T seem to do is get BIDS 2008 R2 to connect to Oracle using ANY method (MSDAORA, ADO.NET, ODAC).
The problem seems isolated to my machine, I can otherwise open, view, validate, connect and run these packages on other machines with no issues.
I have tried the following:
Ensured any/all TNSNAMES files are correct and identical (taking working copies from other machines, and let's not forget, this works fine in VS2010)
Created ORACLE_HOME and TNS_ADMIN Environment Variables and pointed them to various directories within D:\app\username\product\11.2.0
Checked registry manually to make sure no other references to ORACLE except for the entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE
Unistalled/Reinstalled SQL Server 2008 R2 components
Every "solution" offered in every thread in every search I have tried

After each attempt at a fix, I still get the following error when trying to Preview a SQL Command in the Data Flow:

Yes, I know I need to drop MSDAORA in favor of ODAC, and if ODAC worked in BIDS 2008 R2 I would certainly do it. However, I can't get anything to connect to Oracle there (even though, as mentioned above, it connects fine in various other tools)
I have two "client_n" directories in D:\app\username\product\11.2.0. As mentioned, I have tried pointing my environment variables to various paths inside. It seems like the correct path for ORACLE_HOME should be just D:\app\username\product\11.2.0, correct?
Has anyone had any luck getting BIDS 2008 R2 to connect to Oracle while on WINDOWS 8 with VS2010 also installed? It seems to me like it's a simple Oracle connection issue, I just don't know enough about Oracle to troubleshoot.
Any other ideas to try?
BIDS is x32 (even on an x64 machine), so you will need to install the Oracle Client x32 edition, Full Install.
We were able to get it to work, though I believe that we installed too much software. (I have not been able to test it with only the ODAC drivers.)
Install the Oracle Client 32 & 64-bit drivers.
Install the Oracle ODAC 32 & 64-bit drivers.
In BIDS use the native Oracle connection, and not the Microsoft driver.
I'm still trying to install Microsoft Lync at VM Windows Server 2008. But its always failed at "Prepare first Standard Edition Server". The error message is this.
"Checking prerequisite SqlExpressRtc.. installing...failure code -2068578304".
Is anybody know how to solve it? I try to search on google, but still failed. I also try to uninstall my sql server, still failed.. :D

This issue is because you are trying to install SQLServer 2008 Express Edition prerrequisite on a Domain Controller, and the Lync Server setup always try to install SQL Server Express with NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService account to Start the service, and this isn't allowed in a Domain Controller.
You need to execute manually the stament to install SQL Server 2008 Express edition, but changing the NetworkService account for SYSTEM account (or a domain account) ... would be something like this:

Are there any limitations with respect to developing ASP.NET and WPF apps using VS 2008/2010 and SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 Home Premium?
I know you can run IIS 7.5 on Home Premium. I Googled and Binged on Home Premium and VS/SQL Server and couldn't find much. It doesn't look like the features missing from Home Premium, domain joining, xp mode, etc... shouldn't prevent one from running and developing in VS/SQL Server.

I did discover one limitation w/IIS 7.5 and it applies to all versions of Windows 7 I think. You can't create your own self signed SSL certificate specifying a name other than the machine name. You're stuck with your machine name which isn't that big a deal, but it is a change from previous versions.

You can't do remote debugging on Home Premium. msvsmon won't run at all. I can't even get it to do remote debugging natively.
Visual studio will run fine. You will be "limited" to either SQL Server Express, or SQL Server Developer edition as the mssql installer checks the OS version and will refuse to install the higher end editions on desktop OSes. Note that developer edition is the exact same as the higher end editions, except with a different license, you can only use it for development, not to run real databases.
Yes, you can, and you won't have any trouble with it.
In general, application compatibility is not affected by the edition (not version) of Windows.
I would consider what the target infrastructure (Windows/IIS, .net, SQL Server etc versions) would be if you want to deploy it...
