We're using Joomla! and K2. Is it possible to 'extend' a K2 extra field, to present an admin user with a drop-down populated with items from the database? The ID of the selected item would be stored against the extra field.
This seems like something that should be easy to achieve, but I haven't unearthed much information on extending K2.

In case it ever helps someone, we achieved this by overriding K2ModelItem (in templates\our_template\code\com_k2\models). We made the extra field a list type, and then added in our own code to pre-populate this in getItemExtraFields().

I am creating a new Joomla Component. I am able to create custom fields for the component backend forms - but I am not able to create Dynamic Custom Fields.
What I would like to do is have a field that is dynamical populated based on the value of a previous field. The easiest way to explain this is the simple country,state,city breakdown.
Field 1 = Country
Field 2 = State (Based on what the user selected as as Country in Field 1)
Field 3 = City (Based on what the user selected as State in Field 2)
The fields would of course need to be refreshed, reset as the user picks a different country etc.
The data to populate the fields would also all need to come from a database based on the previous fields value.
I am guessing this needs to be done via ajax or javascript or something? But wondering if there is an official way? Especially since there are database calls involved.
Please let me know if there is anything I can explain better..

I ended up just creating text fields but then validating the input to make sure the values added are correct.
I'm currently developing my first MVC component for Joomla 3.x. All in all I'm bit struggling with language/translation issues in database.
My problem is that I need to store translated content of user generated content which comes from the backend. For example someone enters a new item in German (stored in database) and needs a translation in another language. How to accomplish that in Joomla? I don't like to generate a new item for every different language when the rest is all the same.
I thought about a table "item" and a table "item_language" with that structure (strongly simplified for viewing purposes):

In item_language I would like to store the different translated versions. In the language field there would be the region code (eg. de-DE) to identify the language.
My problems:
How to display the different (translated) versions in backend?
Is this the right database model?

You have really found yourself a nice task for a first component in Joomla!
A rather generalist answer:
The database model seems right. Alternatively you could encode in JSON the language data, but this could make later query operations potentially difficult. This way you will only have one table to work with.
As far as I know (if you are using JModel / JTable to manipulate the data) can't do this directly, as JTable is really only designed to manipulate single tables.
What you can do:
For editing: figure a way to represent this graphically ( for your users to see and edit this one to many relationship) and to post this data (language texts as an array) to JModel. In the model you can maintain the desired relationships and save the data using JTable.
Viewing (without editing) shouldn't be an issue, it would be a simple JOIN.
If you are willing to create a basic component on github, I might even give you a hand with JModel / JTable.
I found a way to deal with the things I needed.

Here the whole procedure (simplified - validations and exact steps omitted):
Define the form fields in the models/forms/site.xml as normal.
In views/site/tmpl/edit.php add self coded Javascript (based on jQuery) to deal with the fields which have content in multiple languages stored as JSON in database.
Clone the original form element and modify the needed attributes (id, name, ...) to display a special version just for the defined languages. As content - extract the JSON for the needed language from original field content and display.
Hide the original field with Javascript and append the customized versions to DOM.
Afterwards in tables/site.php I read the dynamically generated content withJInput and build together the original field by generating JSON and saving to database.
It's working like expected.
first of all, sorry for my english, but I'll try to explain myself best I can.
My question is little tricky, because I made some important changes in the core code of VirtueMart.
For some reasons, I added an attribute to the Custom Fields, like Price, called Availability.
TIP: The admin site is in Spanish. Disponibilidad = Availability
So, now, when I try to change any value of any created Custom Field, I can't save it. I mean, I can change the value, but when I apply them, It doesn't be saved.
The only field that I can change, is the field I created, the Availability (ironically).
So, my principal question is, how does VirtueMart to pick up the data from the table and sends them to the database?

The workflow is like follows,
When you save the products details on the backend , It calls a function store() on the product.php model. under administrator/components/com_virtuemart/models/. Inside this function an area like follows.

It loading the custom model file from the same path and do the task inside saveModelCustomfields()

I'm trying to modify the credit card form to add some new custom fields named "Bank Name" and "Bank Phone Number" and it seems this cannot be done through the back-end.
I've searched the web and on here but I haven't been able to find anything in reference on how to add a new custom field to the credit card form. I would think it's almost the same as adding a new field to the customer registration form but I have no clue what to do database wise.
If anyone has anything I can use to work on this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
You should start by informing which version of Magento you are using and which methods you have already tried.
Without knowing that it is hard to help you, but you might want to try this possible solution, this one, or even one of these modules: Checkout Fields Manager or ADDITIONAL CHECKOUT ATTRIBUTES. If none of the above work, try this search.
No, Magento admin panel will not add custom columns for you. You need to do it yourself.
First, you need to edit the .phtml file to include these two fields to show up in frontend.
Second, you need to add two new columns (with same name as your fields, explained later) in relevant DB table (i guess sales_flat_order_payment). But that will affect for all payment methods, so define it something like VARCHAR(255) NULL.
Third, when Magento saves the CC info, you need to check if it is saving whole data array, then your field's name posted will match your table field and get inserted automatically. Else you need to edit it.
Also, next time please post some code, atleast something you have tried.
I'm a beginner using Joomla 1.5. I have a page which shows articles in a blog format. My objective is to show/filter the articles per year (which isn't that many) based on user input. I'm planning to create a module on the right side, showing a dropdown box of the years, and retrieve the results by passing the year parameter as part of the URL

What is the best, simplest way of passing and processing additional parameters to com_content via URL? Can I do so using extensions such as K2 and flexicontent? If not, can someone advise me what code to add and where, in com_content? If I have to extend com_content itself, can someone guide me how to or point some useful articles?

I don't know if K2 or flexicontent offer this option, but com_content appears NOT to have this feature.
I would just build a module, create a query and use the table jos_content, select only the fields that you need (like title) and check the field created to be in the year you need.
