I want to develop a website in an existing domain name, say http://www.example.com/~username/
I have access only to my domain.
Is there any way I can create a joomla website?
In other words, do I have to ask people in the main server to install joomla?
download joomla from here and upload it your your ftp. Then go your your website address which will take you through the installation process. If you do not have access to your server, then you will have to ask whoever does.

I just recently pointed the domain to the new website but the owner would like to access his old website for his data.
The old website uses Magento while the new site uses Wordpress. The hosting for both websites are different.
Can I access the old website through the IP address of the old hosting?
The old hosting suggested changing my hosts file, but it is not acceptable as the client would want to open both sites at the same time on the same browser
The website is also access from the temporary URL as well. So You need to do following things.
Get temporary URL from Cpanel.
Setup temporary URL for old website (magento) in core_config_data table.
Remove cache and try to access website with temporary URL in browser.
So I have just started to work on a client's site, and their site is apparently on a hong kong based hosting company.
I asked them the username and password for accessing the files and their old developer gave us this ftp:/130.. ip address like link
with the username and password.
When I click the link and the browser takes my username and password, I get a index list of all the files.
I however want to download all the files and I was wondering if there is a way of doing so without having the hosting site to have admin log in from.
Just in case the hong kong office guys dont give in all the info.
What should I do to have the files download to a folder using something like Filezilla or some other method? Cause I am new to web development and design, I tried using filezilla but that didnt give me the directory or connect fully.
the ftp user that gave u is limited . so with filezila you can see just a specific folder.
and in another hand , to download easily u can download them with IDM , just set user , pass into it and download all the files.

I need to give someone access to a website I made for a friend but only want them to have access to the addon domain folder. Is this possible (with JustHost)?
Figured it out. In case anyone was wondering, in the control panel on JustHost there is an FTP Accounts section where you can give access to certain addon domains such as public_html/domainname.com with its own login.
I am using joomla 3.0 and i want to when user open joomla 3.0 site then first open only login page then after login he can access website.
Thanks For Advance
You can put the site in offline mode.
So the site will display the login page.
Remember to grant permissions to the users to access the offline site!
If you want to "protect" the whole site with login the best option is to turn the site off and then the user will need to login after opening the intranet page. Its probably the cleanest way how to to it without modules/plugins.
As we are doing it in my company (we are also running intranet on Joomla!) is, that all the articles are set to registred and the landing page of intranet just contain warm welcome and login form.
One thing to mention: Forcing this login for viewing some article/other content is not secure at all, mostly the local instalation will run on database with root access without pass (default setting) and with unecrypted database easily accessible. This is something to consider. If you are running this intranet in small company with loyal employees or without sensitive information you should be fine if not you should put more stress on the security issues.
I have had a third-party developer install & custom code a magento site for me. What are things I must take care of to ensure I can run the site independently of him. I understand its important to have my email as the admin user, get the encryption key etc.
What else is important here?
Thanks.

Access to your hosting account is all you need, as it will give you acces to your files and database.
