Downloading supported file using Windows Phone 7 - windows-phone-7

I am having the following problem when using windows phone.
I have created a handler Download.ashx which takes query ID that I am using to retrieve data from database. Pretty simple stuff and it works on desktop browsers. However when I am trying to use that same way on windows phone 7 I get an error "can't download file windows phone doesn't support this file type"
After quick search on google, I found that WP7 doesn't support this kind of way for downloading files. They should be direct links, for downloading to work.
So my question is: What is the best way to go around this problem, or is there any?
Edit: Oh, and the software I am writing is C# web application that used on mobile devices. WP7.5 is the one having problems

Loading Windows.phone.Speech into PowerShell

So I have been poking around looking for some way to use Cortana (mainly her voice although the commands would be nice too) in windows powershell.
yes I am aware speech recognition and speech Synthesis is quite easy to do with system.speech. that's not my goal
so far I can load winRT components with this syntax:
[FullTypeNameIncludingNameSpace,NameSpace,ContentType=WindowsRuntime]
thanks to this website here: http://karlprosser.com/coder/2014/04/06/winrt-and-powershell-part-1/
looking through the windows API found here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/br211377.aspx
I see that there are both
Windows.Media.SpeechSynthesis
And
windows.phone.speech.synthesis
Now I tried Windows.Media.SpeechSynthesis and it seems to work; However, it seems to be almost the same as system.speech
The code:
returns the same voices used by system.speech
this leaves me to assume that cortana in windows 10 is using windows.phone.speech.synthesis
and here voice is located elsewhere.
the trouble is, when trying to use windows.phone.speech.synthesis with
[windows.phone.speech.synthesis.installedvoices,Windows.Phone.Speech.Synthesis,ContentType=WindowsphoneRuntime]
I get the following error:
Unable to find type [windows.phone.speech.synthesis.installedvoices,Windows.Phone.Speech.Synthesis,
ContentType=WindowsphoneRuntime]. Make sure that the assembly that contains this type is loaded.
This comes up with anything related to windows.phone.
i would guess that it would not be available on the PC, but then how/where is cortana located for windows 10 and how can she be accessed? or am I just referencing the component wrong?

system Audio Processing Objects (sAPO) and Skype in windows 8.1

I have googled and searched a number of forums and developer websites without any success; I believe it is a specific question that needs direct expertise or knowledge, so please read on!
BACKGROUND:
I have an audio enhancement algorithm that is implemented as a system Audio Processing Object (sAPO) that was developed and tested successfully in Windows 7. As an APO, it applies processing to all audio stream through an end point device, including audio originating from Skype.
QUESTION:
Is it true that this is not applicable to Windows 8.x ( 8.1 or greater)? More specifically, does sAPO processing still work for Skype? Does Skype disable any and all APO processing on its stream?
WHAT HAS BEEN TRIED SO FAR:
(1) I have succeeded in following the standard procedure of loading an unsigned APO from Windows 7 in Windows 8.
(2) I have tested this with Skype audio stream and that works as well.
HOWEVER:
(1) above, fails in Windows 8.1 developer preview. As a result I have not been able to test (2).
Please note that I am specifically asking about Windows 8.1, in a laptop or desktop. This is not for mobile phones or tablets. Any information or links regarding this is much appreciated!
I am also trying to update an APO which have been developed for W7/8 to the new format introduced by W8.1, however it doesn't seem like much documentation has been released yet.
What I have found so far, is that Windows 8.1 requires some new methods for discovery and control of effects to be implemented into the APO. This means that Skype would be able to discover certain APO effects and disable them if it needs to.
The new interface IAudioSystemEffects2:

Some updated code can be found in the new SwapAPO example:

Not much, but hopefully it can help you get going in the right direction.

Is there an Adobe AIR like product for just HTML5 (no flash) on Windows

I would like to create a Windows desktop app using HTML5 features, specifically H.264 video,Web SQL Database,FileReader API. I don't want to use AIR (which currently does not support the video tag, instead uses Flash). Ideally I would like an exe file that just wraps the latest version of webkit in a basic window. It should be stand alone, not rely on the user having Chrome etc. installed. It could load an index.html file in the same directory as the exe. That is it.
I have been unable to find anything like this. I was going to build it myself using QTWebkit but the latest version (4.8.0) does not support the Video tag due to some kind of build issue. I assume the 4.8.1 version will fix this.
Does anyone out there know of something like this that is available now?
For anyone coming across this, Titanium for desktop is no longer supported by Appcelerator, but the project is still supported as an open source initiative. As of today (10/14/2012), it is called TideSDK. According to their Twitter account, they're behind in the 1.3 release due to some sponsored work that will end up in the code base.
Additional options not yet mentioned include AppJS (OSS, requires node.js) and Sencha Desktop Packager (quite pricey).
I think titanium is not totally gone. There is this stuff called tideSdk
I couldn't try it out yet also , so video support and the codec are open for your exploration. Here is how they say:
Create multi-platform desktop apps with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript
TideSDK is the new standard for creating beautiful and unique desktop
apps using your web development skills.
I recently thought about doing the same thing, you can still do it with air without using flash, but you could also use Chrome Packaged apps, mozilla prism (although inactive today) or Microsoft HTA (html application).
You can think of using a framework that does the browser embedding for you like Titanium. It's mostly used for creating apps that can be published to iphone, android, and windows devices. It will create a windows MSI install.
Another option is to use the CEF project ( Chromium Embedded Framework for C/C++). I havn't looked at it much, so I can't tell you how difficult/easy it is to work with. Their main site also has wrappers for Java, .NET, and other languages.

is there any free barcode reader sdk for Windows Phone 7?

I am developing windows mobile application to scan a product barcode by using in built camera. Can you tell me something about barcode reader sdk which are supporting windows mobile 7?
In Windows Phone 7, with the upcoming Mango update, there will be direct access to the camera feed, without having to take a picture of the barcode. Prior to Mango, there is a library that can be downloaded from Codeplex, called ZXIng (Zebra Crossing). http://silverlightzxing.codeplex.com/
Are you developing for Windows Phone, or Windows Mobile? There is no Windows Mobile 7 - with the complete rewrite, the name changed to Windows Phone.
There is always this library (zxing):
http://silverlightzxing.codeplex.com/
It does a pretty decent job, and is able to read a number of different barcodes/qrcodes/and so on.
I updated the link to the silverlight version.
You can see the documentation here:
http://silverlightzxing.codeplex.com/documentation
It's fairly easy to implement, as he's given everything you need for WP7.

Cross-platform HTML application options

I'd like to develop a stand-alone desktop application targeting Windows (XP through 7) and Mac (Tiger through Snow Leopard), and if possible iPhone and Android. In order to make it all work with as much common code as possible (and because it's the only thing I'm good at), I'd like to handle the main logic with HTML and JS. Using Adobe AIR is a possibility. And I think I can do this with various application wrappers, using .NET for Windows XP, Objective C for iPhone, Java for Android and native "widget" platform support for Mac and Windows Vista & 7 (though I'd like to keep the widget in the foreground, so the Mac dashboard isn't ideal). Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? The two sticking points are:
I'll certainly need some form of persistent storage (cookies perhaps) to keep state between sessions
I'll also probably need access to remote data files, so if I use AJAX and the hosting HTML file resides on the device, it will need to be able to do cross-domain requests. I've done this on the iPhone without any problems, but I'd be surprised if this were possible on other platforms.
For me, Android and iPhone will be the easiest to handle, and it looks like I can use Adobe AIR to handle the rest. But I wanted to know if there are any other alternatives. Does anyone have any suggesions?
You might be interested in Appcelerator's Titanium. It's an alternative to Adobe AIR that lets you build native mobile and desktop apps using HTML and JS (with the WebKit rendering engine, so you can take full advantage of HTML5 and CSS3). It also satisfies your two sticking points:
SQLite is available for persistence storage.
There are no restrictions on cross-domain requests.
I used Titanium Desktop for a recent project and it was a relatively smooth development process. It's also open source so you have access to the full application at all times.
Check it out and let me know if it works for you.
You can create a desktop application with HTML, CSS & Javascript using either of the following two frameworks
TideSDK
AppJS
For mobile you can use the similar HTML and Javascript using PhoneGap
