FTP using filezilla - ftp

Its been so long since i've needed to ftp something I seem to have forgotten how to do it.
(server address)I have got my ftp address
(password)I have got my password
(port)I have assumed the port is 20 or 21
I am using Filezilla and the above are the only information it requests.
I had connected it to localhost without any problems apart from it not showing the files that are stored in my htdocs folder (I had a look to see if i needed to direct to the folder but couldn't find anything to say that it was necessary) the port number for that was 14147. When I try to connect to a remote host I keep receiving errors saying maybe the port is incorrect or "Connected, waiting for authentication", I cannot leave the port option blank, I have tried 20, 21, 25, 80, 8080, 14147 and a couple of random ones after getting frustrated.
I have gone onto my provider and tried to find the port but cant seem to find the port they use for anything other than the emails, that was 25 and that is when i get the Connected, waiting for authentication message.
In short can someone please direct me to an idiots guide to FTP'ing, I know it should be quite straight-forward, but i'm really struggling. I have looked at a few tutorials but as it is such a straight forward job none seem to address my issue.
Please help (I assume what im trying to ftp doesnt make a difference?)

Little confusing to understand but if you need help setting up an ftp servers, heres how:
download and install Filezilla server(assuming this is done)
when it asks for what server leave it at default(host is 127.0.0.1
and port 14147)
set up a group. for this go to edit->groups and
hit add and name it.
now go to shared folders and select the
folder(s) you want this group to access along with what permissions
they need. Hit ok.
now set up a user in your group. Go to
edit->users
Click add, name the account(this will be your
username) and set the group
ensure the box labeled enable account
is selected and that you have a password set up.
hit ok to save
changes. Now try to connect through localhost using an FTP client.
if it works then continue on. If it does not work ensure that a
firewall is not blocking the server
set up port forwarding for
port 21(every router is different so try googling how to do this).
test by using your external ip address. Don't know it? try
whatismyip.com
That should be all you need to do for your new FTP server

Able to ssh to server using only one domain yet they all use the same ip

Thanks in advance.
I have setup a server in which I intend to host a couple of applications but something weird is happening, I have bought a couple of domains which I have all mapped to the same ip address, but now when trying to ssh to that server only one of the domains goes through, the rest don't.
Someone please explain why this is happening and what I could have probably done wrong
Am I correct that you are attempting to connect to the different domains via different saved configurations in your SSH terminal app. If so, check that you have connected each of those configurations to the appropriate private key. And of course check any other settings you may have needed in those configurations.
For example, make sure that if the host name for the working one is <username>#<domainOne> then the others are not simply <domainTwo.com>. (Errors like this can be hidden in some SSH terminals if the domain is very long.)

Putty error : Unable to open connection to hostname : Host does not exist

I am using Putty to ssh into some of the servers that I work on. I am able to connect all others except the one. Although I was able to connect to it before. Whenever I try connecting to it, it always give me error:
Unable to open connection on myhost: Host does not exist
My firewall is off and I have even re-installed putty but that did not fix it. When I tried connecting to the same server using putty on some other windows system, I was able to do so. I searched regarding this on Internet but did not find much relevant.
I am running putty on Windows 7.
What can be the possible issue?
As I understand you have three computers involved. At the same time one connection is working and the other one fails. So we can exclude that the ssh daemon on your linux box is hanging.
In lack of knowing their real names I will call your computers linuxbox (this is the computer you want to ssh into), win7ok (that is the computer that you are able to ssh from using putty) and win7fail (that obviously is the computer you can't connect from).
Please do a tracert from both Win7 computers:
tracert linuxbox.your.domain
tracert linuxbox
Add the results to your question as it will help us find out what is happening.
Perhaps it is also a good idea to determine the ip address of the linuxbox from win7ok:
ping linuxbox
or
nslookup linuxbox
Then try to connect from win7fail by using the ip address of the target computer, perhaps it is only a DNS problem (which might be as nmap is failing too).
To make all of this easier to understand for us please provide the real names of the computers as you use them in putty.
For me the problem was with the Url of the reposity. Check remote URL. It must start with git#github.com, not https://.
I used nslookup and then used the ip address it gave me to connect and it worked
I had a similar problem with GitExtensions. The solution was to remove the https url and replace it with git#gitlab....
WRONG:
GOOD:
I just went through this. I have a Cisco VPN I need to use to get through to the Linux machine I wanted to login to and check.
No Putty session would get through using the machines name.
An nslookup on the windows machine yielded the correct address.
I too connected right in via the ip address.
I tried to Google the error and it failed, so I suspected the wireless.
Disconnected and reconnected my WiFi and all was good.
I did it fast enough that open connections stayed open.
And new connections refering to DNS names worked fine.
Seems like maybe some cached DNS addresses were stale.
Your DNS cache stores the locations (IP addresses) of web servers that contain web pages which you have recently viewed. If the location of the web server changes before the entry in your DNS cache updates, you can no longer access the site.
Following CLI command will do the trick:
ipconfig /flushdns

Self Hosted WebApi Accessible over LAN

Very new to the Self Host WebApi, but I am very impressed with its ease of use and extendability. At least through this tutorial. Everything I've done so far works on my development machine whether I use localhost, 127.0.0.1, or my LAN Ip (192.168.0.x) but I am baffled why I can't access the service from any other computer even others in the same subnet.
In short after going through the tutorial on the machine where it is running:
Browsing to
localhost:3636/api/products/
results in the expected xml return.
On another machine on the LAN browsing to:
192.168.0.x:3636/api/products/
results in a timeout
Data points for those who might know how this all interacts:
1.) My dev machine(192.168.0.x, server, host whatever you want to call it) has IIS on it; I was so paranoid it was in the way that I stopped it via the Administration GUI
2.) I have reserved the URL/Port with the following command line executions:
>netsh http add urlacl url=http://+:3636/ user=DOMAIN\USER listen=yes delegate=yes
>netsh http add urlacl url=http://192.168.0.x:3636/ user=DOMAIN\USER listen=yes delegate=yes
2.b) I've tried both of those together and individually, and tried changing the user to "everyone" to no avail
3.) I have tried to change the code in the tutorial to set the
config.HostNameComparisonMode = HostNameComparisonMode.Exact //default is Strong Wildcard
4.) I can successfully ping and tracert to 192.168.0.x from other machines on the LAN
5.) A friend recommended I setup a TCPListener and ensure I could telnet to that to eliminate the firewall as a possibility. If that logic is sound, the firewall isn't the problem
EDIT: Thanks for your help, here's another data point that I believe confirms it's not a firewall issue. I previously posted this connection when behind a rather obtuse (at least to a non Certified guy like me) Juniper Firewall/Router. I have since redone the tutorial on another machine (without IIS) on my home network and still cannot publish the service to other computers within my LAN. Any ideas?
Well it wasn't the hardware firewall, it was the windows firewall! yikes i wasted a bunch of time on that. Once I turned off the windows firewall (the code runs in an intranet anyway) everything worked.
Anyone know of a good site that explains how firewalls and wireshark interact; or i suppose that just has to be one's first test.
I would try a couple things:
First off, get rid of the HostNameComparisonMode line. That might actually disable requests coming from other machines.
If things still don't work, try getting rid of the URL ACLs and run your application as an administrator and see if that works. If that works, you may be able to add the URL ACL back on and not have to run as an administrator. You should only need the one with '+' as the hostname.
I faced the same problem when i tried to self host using OWIN. What worked for me was -
Run Visual Studio as an Admin
Remove any and all netsh urlacl port registrations that I had added while debugging this issue
Add a inbound rule to my windows firewall
I followed the instructions on this link
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/wcf/samples/firewall-instructions
Check out the section - To enable a port range in advance
That's it! I was able to call my api from other computers on the network.
Hope this helps...

A script that download a file and rename

I'm facing an little issue here. At the place I live, they shape the download speed by extension (using delaypool). Is there any script that I can run on my web that will let me enter the URL of files that I wanted to download, then it will download the file and rename it to "originalfilename.abc" (because .abc is not shaped)then save it on my web where I can download it. By the way, I have a paid webhosting service.
Thanks
I tried the SSH (my web hosting does indeed provide me with shell access) but all I get is a blank page in my browser. No error. Please advice.
Also, reason I choose script on the server instead of SSH because I though that SSH would be slower than direct HTTP download from my webserver. Can anyone point that out if I'm right or wrong with my thinking.
Thanks
You can write a vbs script or even batch file script that will go to a designated URL, and then download the file, then rename it. Then you can script FTP commands to upload to your webhosting service (I'm sure it has an FTP site for access). You could load this as a scheduled task, or run it manually.
I'd do either one of these routes.
A simpler (once its set up anyway ;) option I can think of is going through a secure tunnel. Whilst this is not quite answering your question I believe this to be simpler while achieving the same thing.
Get an SSH Client (Putty) and get a free Proxy. If your web-server has an SSH-server you can use it as Proxy as well of course, I am using my modified router at home as proxy via DynDns, but the Tor-Network will work, if very slow, so do other official free and paid proxy servers. If you are using an application to download that does not have the option to specify a proxy, get Proxifier Portable.
Use Putty to create the tunnel. Here some how-tos:
http://oldsite.precedence.co.uk/nc/putty.html
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/security/use-putty-as-a-secure-proxy-on-windows/421
http://kimmo.suominen.com/docs/proxy-through-ssh/
And set your application to use your proxy (or actually to use putty which connects via SSH to your proxy) by entering 127.0.0.1:1080 into the proxy settings. Alternatively, if the app does not have an option to enter proxy settings, add 127.0.0.1:1080 to your Proxifier proxy list and add the applications that are supposed to use that connection to Proxifier.
Now you can do pretty much everything without anyone eavesdropping your connection stream being able to tell what it is, as the connection stream is SSH encrypted. This includes surfing websites that your provider/company/mother has blocked, download anything - even if blocked by IP/name/whatever-filters and even play MMORPGs from work (something which I do not recommend because it will get you fired and there is always some way for someone to figure it out, just saying it is possible to do even in secured company/school networks as Port 22 (SSH) is usually one of the 2 Ports which are open on pretty much any network (the other one being port 80)).
Its a wee bit of a pain to set up. Once it is working though, you can even put it on a usb-stick and use it pretty much anywhere as long as you remember what proxy to connect to. And you wont have to rewrite scripts to try to circumvent the delaypool thingy.

Red5 Problem with connecting from remote client

So I have this issue. The issue is I am unable to connect to my red5 server from a remote client. I also have not found any tutorials on how to install red5 so that remote clients can connect to it. However, here is what I have done...
Inside My MXML Flex File I try to connect to the computers IP that the server is running on(My Server is running from within Eclipse). The line for connecting looks like this netConnection.connect(rtmp://192.168.2.12/myApp, true);
All that happens is after a lot of minutes go by, I just get NetConnection.Connect.Failed and there is no log being output by Eclipse. Almost like it never even registers the connection that the remote client is trying to make.
The other interesting thing is that I am ABLE to connect to my Red5 Server using a different computer within my local home network just fine. But only when it is remote I am unable to connect.
I have changed my Red5-web.properties file and added this...
webapp.contextPath=/myApp
webapp.virtualHosts=*, 127.0.0.1, localhost, 192.168.2.14, 174.122.104.3
The 174 one is my website where the Flex Swf Resides on.
I think maybe somehow my computer is not setup or configured to allow these remote connections and is rejecting them or something, I'm not quite sure why a remote client can't connect. Does anyone have any idas?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
You may uninstall the red5 and reinstall it.
When it ask you the server ip address type your server's LAN adress (192.168.2.* or 10.0.0.* whatever). This solved my problem.
In my opinion, if you have at least one domain name that you own, the best way for you to go is to set up an Apache Http Server to your server machine, and create subdomains for both red5, rtmp and rtmpt. Make the Apache handle your incoming requests, and decide their correct routing there.
In case you don't own a domain, or the previous way is too time-taking to set up and get it work, you should just make sure that the ip address you're trying to connect to is not an internal IP.
In your example above you are trying to connect from the client to a 192.168... address. If you try to connect to it from within your LAN, it works, since that ip there is registered to your machine.
But when you take your notebook to your neighbor, and using his internet connection to access your site and connect to red5, the client (flex application) will also try to connect to that 192.168..., and your neighbor's router has no idea about your LAN, probably it doesn't have such an internal IP address either, but SURELY cannot connect to your server.
So instead of using 192.168... in your connection string, you should try using your external IP address (the 174... one):
netConnection.connect("rtmp://174.122.104.3/myApp", true);
This will work always, as far as you have a static IP address.
Also make sure, that your red5 server is accessible over the 80 port, or if it's not, specify the correct port number there.
For that you can do following thing...
These steps I took and it's solved my problem...
1.During the installation, you must have given ip 127.0.0.1 (localhost) and port :5080
2.firstly open the port (5080 and 1935) on firewall.
Visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/open-port-windows-firewall#1TC=windows-7
3.Now to go red5->conf->red5.properties and open this file in notepad++. (or any other editor)
4.repalce http.host and rtmp.host ip with your ip address (ipv4)
5.start the red5 service.
6.Now check http://yourip:5080
It will start working, and you can access it from other system also (in the same network Obviously )
