I use the following to write queue contents to a file:
q -xb -ITESTQ -mTEST > messages.out
I had 3 binary messages in the queue that got written to the file successfully. Now I have a need to load the same file back to the queue (same queue at a later time). When I do:
q -xb -oTESTQ -mTEST < messages.out
It puts 9 messages instead of 3. I am guess the formatting is misread while the file is loaded. I've noticed there is -X option in the q program. What is the usage of it? What other options I have?
You really need to look at the QLoad program (SupportPac MO03) for this. Same author as the Q program and every bit as good a tool. Also free. As the author explains in the manual:
Ever since I released my MA01 (Q Utility) SupportPac I have had
periodic requests to explain how it can be used to unload, and
subsequently reload, messages from a queue. The answer has always been
that this is not what MA01 is for and that surely there must be a
utility available. Well, after sufficient numbers of these requests I
looked for a utility myself and didn’t really find anything which
fitted the bill. What was needed was a very simple, some would say
unsophisticated, program which unloaded a queue into a text file. The
notion of a text file was important because a number of users wanted
the ability to change the file once it had been created. I also find
that text based files are more portable and so this seemed useful if
we want to unload a queue, say on Windows, and then load the messages
again on a Solaris machine. The disadvantage of this approach is that
the file is larger than it would be in binary mode. Storing data using
the hex representation of the character rather than the character
itself essentially uses twice as much space. However, in general I do
not envisage people using this program to unload vast amounts of
message data but a few test messages or a few rogue messages on the
dead letter queue which are then changed and reloaded elsewhere.

I have some Processing code that periodically reads data wirelessly from remote devices and writes that data as bytes to a file, e.g. data.dat. I want to write an Objective C program on my Mac Mini using Xcode to read this file, parse the data, and act on the data if data values indicate a problem. My question is: can my two different programs access the same file asynchronously without a problem? If this is a problem can you suggest a technique that will allow these operations?

Multiple processes can read from the same file at a time without any problem. A process can also read from a file while another writes without problem, although you'll have to take care to ensure that you read in any new data that was written. Multiple processes should not write to the same file at at the same time, though. The OS will let you do it, but the ordering of data will be undefined, and you'll like overwrite data—in general, you're gonna have a bad time if you do that. So you should take care to ensure that only one process writes to a file at a time.
The simplest way to protect a file so that only one process can write to it at a time is with the C function flock(), although that function is admittedly a bit rudimentary and may or may not suit your use case.
I would like to do the following :
I want to imple,ment the concept of FIFO in normal files using GUILE.
Two processes should communicate via a normal text file, that a third process , if needed, can access.
The subordinate of the original two processes should write in the file, line after line, that is append. So far so good. (implemented in c++)
The master proces however, should treat this file as a FIFO, it should read the first line, and do somethong corresponding to it, and delete the first line leaving the rest intact.
The problems are :
While the Master is accessing the file, the subordinate may come to a point where it must write there, leading to a conflict.
Popping the first line may need reading the whole ile out, in a string, poping the first thereof, and then saving it, which is memory intensive, and the second saving action may again conflict with the child trying to write there,
I wanted to implement this in GUILE, because since it is the official OS extension language, there might be better ways which addresses the above two issues.
But in the web I do not find much to orient myself. Please help, sorry for the lewss than concrete question, then I dont have a code snippet to show.
I want to be able to (programmatically) move (or copy and truncate) a file that is constantly in use and being written to. This would cause the file being written to would never be too big.
Is this possible? Either Windows or Linux is fine.
To be specific what I'm trying to do is log video with FFMPEG and create hour long videos.
It is possible in both Windows and Linux, but it would take cooperation between the applications involved. If the application that is writing the new data to the file is not aware of what the other application is doing, it probably would not work (well ... there is some possibility ... back to that in a moment).
In general, to get this to work, you would have to open the file shared. For example, if using the Windows API CreateFile, both applications would likely need to specify FILE_SHARE_READ and FILE_SHARE_WRITE. This would allow both (multiple) applications to read and write the file "concurrently".
Beyond sharing the file, though, it would also be necessary to coordinate the operations between the applications. You would need to use some kind of locking mechanism (either by locking some part of the file or some shared mutex/semaphore). Note that if you use file locking, you could lock some known offset in the file to act as a "semaphore" (it can even be a byte value beyond the physical end of the file). If one application were appending to the file at the same exact time that the other application were truncating it, then it would lead to unpredictable results.
Back to the comment about both applications needing to be aware of each other ... It is possible that if both applications opened the file exclusively and kept retrying the operations until they succeeded, then perform the operation, then close the file, it would essentially allow them to work without "knowledge" of each other. However, that would probably not work very well and not be very efficient.
Having said all that, you might want to consider alternatives for efficiency reasons. For example, if it were possible to have the writing application write to new files periodically, it might be more efficient than having to "move" the data constantly out of one file to another. Also, if you needed to maintain some portion of the file (e.g., move out the first 100 MB to another file and then move the second 100 MB to the beginning) that could be a fairly expensive operation as well.
logrotate would be a good option is linux, comes stock on just about any distro. I'm sure there's a similar windows service out there somewhere
I am running a batch job that has been going for many many hours, and the log file it is generating is increasing in size very fast and I am worried about disk space.
Is there any way through the command line, or otherwise, that I could hollow out that text file (set its contents back to nothing) with the utility still having a handle on the file?
I do not wish to stop the job and am only looking to free up disk space via this file.
Im on Vista, 64 bit.

Well, it depends on how the job actually works. If it's a good little boy and it pipes it's log info out to stdout or stderr, you could redirect the output to a program that you write, which could then write the contents out to disk and manage the sizes.
If you have access to the job's code, you could essentially tell it to close the file after each write (hopefully it's an append) operation, and then you would have a timeslice in which you could actually wipe the file.
If you don't have either one, it's going to be a bit tough. If someone has an open handle to the file, there's not much you can do, IMO, without asking the developer of the application to find you a better solution, or just plain clearing out disk space.
Depends on how it is writing the log file. You can not just delete the start of the file, because the file handle has a offset of where to write next. It will still be writing at 100mb into the file even though you just deleted the first 50mb.
You could try renaming the file and hoping it just creates a new one. This is usually how rolling logs work.
You can use a rolling log class, which will wrap the regular file class but silently seek back to the beginning of the file when the file reaches a maximum designated size.
It is a very simple wrap, either write it yourself or try finding an implementation online.
I got an application which is polling on a folder continuously. Once any file is ftp to the folder, the application has to move this file to some other folder for processing.
Here, we don't have any option to verify whether ftp is complete or not.
One command "lsof" is suggested in the technical forums. It got a file description column which gives the file status.
Since, this is a free bsd command and not present in old versions of linux, I want to clarify the usage of this command.
Can you guys tell us your experience in file verification and is there any other alternative solution available?
Also, is there any risk in using this utility?

We've done this before in a number of different ways.
Method one:
If you can control the process sending the files, have it send the file itself followed by a sentinel file. For example, send the real file "contracts.doc" followed by a one-byte "contracts.doc.sentinel".
Then have your listener process watch out for the sentinel files. When one of them is created, you should process the equivalent data file, then delete both.
Any data file that's more than a day old and doesn't have a corresponding sentinel file, get rid of it - it was a failed transmission.
Method two:
Keep an eye on the files themselves (specifically the last modification date/time). Only process files whose modification time is more than N minutes in the past. That increases the latency of processing the files but you can usually be certain that, if a file hasn't been written to in five minutes (for example), it's done.
Conclusion:
Both those methods have been used by us successfully in the past. I prefer the first but we had to use the second one once when we were not allowed to change the process sending the files.
The advantage of the first one is that you know the file is ready when the sentinel file appears. With both lsof (I'm assuming you're treating files that aren't open by any process as ready for processing) and the timestamps, it's possible that the FTP crashed in the middle and you may be processing half a file.
There are normally three approaches to this sort of problem.
providing a signal file so that when your file is transferred, an additional file is sent to mark that transfer is complete
add an entry to a log file within that directory to indicate a transfer is complete (this really only works if you have a single peer updating the directory, to avoid concurrency issues)
parsing the file to determine completeness. e.g. does the file start with a length field, or is it obviously incomplete ? e.g. parsing an incomplete XML file will result in a parse error due to the lack of an end element. Depending on your file's size and format, this can be trivial, or can be very time-consuming.
lsof would possibly be an option, although you've identified your Linux portability issue. If you use this, note the -F option, which formats the output suitable for processing by other programs, rather than being human-readable.
EDIT: Pax identified a fourth (!) method I'd forgotten - using the fact that the timestamp of the file hasn't updated in some time.
There is a fifth method. You can also check if the FTP Session is still active. This will work if every peer has it's own ftp user account. As long as the user is not logged off from FTP, assume the files are not complete.
