xpath multiple condition and return root - xpath

Is it possible to do a 'and' condition in xpath like
//foo/bar/test[#val='hello'] and //foo/bar/new[#val='world']
This condition returns true for some reason and not any results. I've tried | but I don't need an or statement.
The results should return all the elements from //foo (where the conditions match) - I need the root element because I'll be pulling data out from different elements.
I'm using xpath to query an exist-db database
I need to put //foo[(position()> 3) and (position() < 6)] in there also.

If you want to get the foo elements, start the [] just after foo:
//foo[bar/test/#val='hello' and bar/new/#val='world']
If you want the children of foo, put the brackets there:
//foo/bar[test/#val='hello' and new/#val="world"]

Cypress - counting number of elements in an array that contain a specific string

Attempting to confirm that of all the schema in the head of a page exactly 3 of them should have a specific string within them. These schemas have no tags or sub classes to differentiate themselves from each other, only the text within them. I can confirm that the text exists within any of the schema:
cy.get('head > script[type="application/ld+json"]').should('contain', '"#type":"Product"')
But what I need is to confirm that that string exists 3 times, something like this:
cy.get('head > script[type="application/ld+json"]').contains('"#type":"Product"').should('have.length', 3)
And I can't seem to find a way to get this to work since .filter, .find, .contains, etc don't filter down the way I need them to. Any suggestions? At this point it seems like I either need to import a custom library or get someone to add ids to these specific schema. Thanks!
The first thing to note is that .contains() always yields a single result, even when many element match.
It's not very explicit in the docs, but this is what it says
Yields
.contains() yields the new DOM element it found.
If you run
cy.get('head > script[type="application/ld+json"]')
.contains('"#type":"Product"')
.then(console.log) // logs an object with length: 1
and open up the object logged in devtools you'll see length: 1, but if you remove the .contains('"#type":"Product"') the log will show a higher length.
You can avoid this by using the jQuery :contains() selector
cy.get('script[type="application/ld+json"]:contains("#type\": \"Product")')
.then(console.log) // logs an object with length: 3
.should('have.length', 3);
Note the inner parts of the search string have escape chars (\) for quote marks that are part of the search string.
If you want to avoid escape chars, use a bit of javascript inside a .then() to filter
cy.get('script[type="application/ld+json"]')
.then($els => $els.filter((index, el) => el.innerText.includes('"#type": "Product"')) )
.then(console.log) // logs an object with length: 3
.should('have.length', 3);

How to select a specific category value in this Xpath expression

I have a feed here. I'm trying to create an XPath expression that returns items that have a category equal to Bananas. Due to the limitations in my XML parser, I can't use namespaces directly to select items.
The expression /rss/channel/item//*[name()='itunes:category'] returns this:
Element='<itunes:category
xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd"
text="Apples"/>'
Element='<itunes:category
xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd"
text="Bananas"/>'
...
And /rss/channel/item//*[name()='itunes:category']/#text returns this:
Attribute='text=Apples'
Attribute='text=Bananas'
...
But I can't figure out how to limit the response to just a single category (e.g., Bananas)?
I want some kind of expression like this:
/rss/channel/item//*[name()='itunes:category' and contains(., 'Bananas')]
But this doesn't work. It's not syntactically valid. What would be the right XPath expression syntax to just return Bananas?
Do you just mean to filter by attributes of item child, but still return item node?
/rss/channel/item/*[name()='itunes:category' and contains(#text,'Apples')]/parent::item
or simplier
/rss/channel/item[*[name()='itunes:category' and #text='Apples']]
I used Apples in example because using your example xml file there is 0 results for Bananas.

Need XPath and XQuery query

I'm working on Xpath/Xquery to return values of multiple child nodes based on a sibling node value in a single query. My XML looks like this
<FilterResults>
<FilterResult>
<ID>535</ID>
<Analysis>
<Name>ZZZZ</Name>
<Identifier>asdfg</Identifier>
<Result>High</Result>
<Score>0</Score>
</Analysis>
<Analysis>
<Name>XXXX</Name>
<Identifier>qwerty</Identifier>
<Result>Medium</Result>
<Score>0</Score>
</Analysis>
</FilterResult>
<FilterResult>
<ID>745</ID>
<Analysis>
<Name>XXXX</Name>
<Identifier>xyz</Identifier>
<Result>Critical</Result>
<Score>0</Score>
</Analysis>
<Analysis>
<Name>YYYY</Name>
<Identifier>qwerty</Identifier>
<Result>Medium</Result>
<Score>0</Score>
</Analysis>
</FilterResult>
</FilterResults>
I need to get values of Score and Identifier based on Name value. I'm currently trying with below query but not working as desired
fn:string-join((
for $Identifier in fn:distinct-values(FilterResults/FilterResult/Analysis[Name="XXXX"])
return fn:string-join((//Identifier,//Score),'-')),',')
The output i'm looking for is this
qwerty-0,xyz-0
Your question suggests some fundamental misunderstandings about XQuery, generally. It's hard to explain everything in a single answer, but 1) that is not how distinct-values works (it returns string values, not nodes), and 2) the double slash selections in your return statement are returning everything because they are not constrained by anything. The XPath you use inside the distinct-values call is very close, however.
Instead of calling distinct-values, you can assign the Analysis results of that XPath to a variable, iterate over them, and generate concatenated strings. Then use string-join to comma separate the full sequence. Note that in the return statement, the variable $a is used to concat only one pair of values at a time.
string-join(
let $analyses := FilterResults/FilterResult/Analysis[Name="XXXX"]
for $a in $analyses
return $a/concat(Identifier, '-', Score),
',')
=> qwerty-0,xyz-0

Xquery - return only distinct attributes from if/then

I've been trying to write a query to get distinct attribute values after using if/then to determine whether I'll use the element in the first place. Here's my example xml and the query i've written so far:
<donors>
<donor donor_id="x21" cn_id="x12">
<homeless>$1201</homeless>
<conservation>$300</conservation>
<cancerResearch>$250</cancerResearch>
</donor>
<donor donor_id="x23" cn_id="x13">
<homeless>$121</homeless>
<conservation>$30</conservation>
<cancerResearch>$50</cancerResearch>
</donor>
<donor donor_id="x24" cn_id="x14">
<homeless>$1201</homeless>
<cancerResearch>$250</cancerResearch>
</donor>
<donor donor_id="x25" cn_id="x12">
<homeless>$1201</homeless>
<conservation>$300</conservation>
<cancerResearch>$250</cancerResearch>
</donor>
</donors>
I want to first get all donors who have a child "conservation". I've done the following for that:
<conservationists>
{
for $x in //donor
return
if(exists($x/conservation))
then <conservationist cn_id="{$x/#cn_id}/>
else ()
}
</conservationists>
I tried wrapping the whole thing in distinct-values but that just gave nothing, and every where else I tried doing something to that effect I just ended up with an end tag.
This is one possible way :
<conservationists>
{
for $x in distinct-values(//donor[conservation]/#cn_id)
return
<conservationist cn_id="{$x}"/>
}
</conservationists>
xpathtester demo
The expression distinct-values(//donor[conservation]/#cn_id) returns distinct values of cn_id attribute from donor elements that have at least one conservation child element.

How to get H1,H2,H3,... using a single xpath expression

How can I get H1,H2,H3 contents in one single xpath expression?
I know I could do this.
//html/body/h1/text()
//html/body/h2/text()
//html/body/h3/text()
and so on.
Use:
/html/body/*[self::h1 or self::h2 or self::h3]/text()
The following expression is incorrect:
//html/body/*[local-name() = "h1"
or local-name() = "h2"
or local-name() = "h3"]/text()
because it may select text nodes that are children of unwanted:h1, different:h2, someWeirdNamespace:h3.
Another recommendation: Always avoid using // when the structure of the XML document is statically known. Using // most often results in significant inefficiencies because it causes the complete document (sub)tree roted in the context node to be traversed.
