windows authentication in windows features in iis - windows-7

I'm having an issue setting up Windows Authentication in IIS 7 on my Windows 7 machine. I know by default this option isn't applied by IIS so you have to tick the Windows Authentication tickbox in Windows Features->Internet Information Services->World Wide Web Services->Security. However, under Security there are only 4 options, which are,
i) Basic Authentication
ii) IP Security
iii) Request Filtering
iv) URL Authorization
Is there any way of getting the Windows Authentication option here? This isn't the only instance where I have noticed this, I've encountered the same problem on another machine with Windows 7 as well.
Thanks,
Pradeep Patel.

I think you need to install it first.
On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, click Programs and Features, and then click Turn Windows Features on or off.
Expand Internet Information Services, then World Wide Web Services, then Security.
Select Windows Authentication, and then click OK.

This is probably caused by a version of Windows, which doesn't provide domain authentification. This can only be accomplished by professional or higher versions of windows.

Because I have the home edition of 7, windows authentication wasn’t available. So enabling or disabling it in my project didn’t really do anything.

The only way I could run my app was by clicking on the solution file in Visual Studio to figure out which is my startup project of my solution.
And then I go to the startup project and enable Anonymous Authentication. Worked for me.

To enable IIS and the required IIS components on Windows 10, do the following:
1)Open Control Panel and click Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off.
2)Enable Internet Information Services.
3)Expand the Internet Information Services feature and verify that the web server components listed in the next section are enabled.
4)Click OK.
Required IIS components:
-Web Management Tools
IIS 6 Management Compatibility
IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility
IIS Management Console
IIS Management Scripts and Tools
IIS Management Service
-World Wide Web Services
Application Development Features
.NET Extensibility 4.5
ASP.NET 4.5

To ensure that IIS is installed and working, type IIS in the Search bar near the Start button. You’ll see the Internet Information Services Manager as a result. Click on that to open it.

iis windows authentication is missing at windows 10 (ASP.NET Visual Studio 2015)

I am trying to run an asp .net website in Visual Studio 2015 that is using windows authentication in IIS7. Although I installed IIS in my PC, while trying to add "windows authentication" from
Control Panel-> Turn Windows features on or off-> Internet Information
Services -> World Wide Web Services -> Security
it seems that this feature is missing from the list.
Have a look at the picture.
What other options do I have in order to run the project via windows authentication?
Windows 10 Home edition doesn't include Windows Authentication (and a bunch of other IIS security features). However, the package with these features is sitting right there in your OS and you can manually install it.
All you need to do is open an elevated command prompt and run:
dism /online /norestart /add-package:%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-IIS-WebServer-AddOn-2-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.16299.15.mum
Filename above may be slightly different since it's based on system bitness and version
Then just make your way back to:
Turn Windows features on or off > Internet Information Services > World Wide Web Services > Security
All the "pro" options under Security will be available. Simply check "Windows Authentication" and reboot.
Windows 10 Home edition does not support windows authentication in IIS. Once you upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, you will see several additional features in IIS, including windows authentication.
Check if this feature is deployed:
At appwiz.cpl, select 'Turn Windows Features on or off', verify if
Internet Information Services -> World Wide Web Services -> Security -> Windows Authentication is selected.
Just rightclick on IIS and click open as 'Adminstrator'. Retry the same. It should work
To enable “Windows Authentication” either you need to upgrade the OS to Pro version or you can run this command to enable it.
C:\WINDOWS\system32>dism /online /norestart /add-package:%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-IIS-WebServer-AddOn-2-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.17134.1.mum
The file name will be different based on windows updates. So please update if requires.

IIS does not list a web site that matches the launched URL

I have sharepoint 2013 application deployed on IIS. When I want to start debugging, I face this error:
"Unable to start debugging on the web server. IIS does not list a web site that matches the launched URL".
I found a few solutions for this issue, but none work for me. The solutions I found:
VS should be running as Administrator. I did that.
Windows Authentication should be enable on IIS. I did that.
'IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility' should be turn on in the Windows features. I did that.
It still doesn't work. Any other solutions? Please help me.
Try to start Visual Studio under administration account by choosing Run as administrator.
If nothing works as above said solutions , try this out
Start >> Control Panel >> Click Programs
Click Turn Windows features on or off.
In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue
Expand Internet Information Services, expand Web Management Tools, and then expand IIS 6 Management Compatibility
Click to select the IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility check box, and then click OK.
I had this same problem.
I was trying to move my solution to a different DEV server of mine, that I don't use that often.
1.) I had not installed some of the items from the Application Development (duh, right) sections of the IIS Role Services. I ended up checking everything, but I think you only need ASP.NET
2.) I installed the asp.net and web tools 2013 available by clicking here

VS2010 web setup project needs IIS6 (metabase) compatibility on IIS7. Consequences or other issues for the application?

When trying to install a web setup project (MSI) created in Visual Studio 2010 on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 2008 Server the setup will fail, with some generic error.
According to http://devio.wordpress.com/2011/04/26/pitfalls-installing-web-setup-msi-on-iis-7/ this is because of a compatibility problem between the setup project en IIS7.
To resolve this I've to enable/install IIS6 metabase compatibility in my windows configuration. This workaround did fix the problem, but raises 2 questions:
Does this have any (negative) impact on functionality of IIS 7?
How can I notify a user running the installation of this problem so he or she can take proper action and install the metabase compatibility component? Is it possible to pop-up the windows component configuration dialog from this install, to make life easier for the user?
I don't think this will have any impact on the application itself, as long as it's implemented the way to talk to IIS7 via its native API. Otherwise, if it doesn't support IIS7 you'd have to enable IIS6 compatibility anyway.
The standard approach to search for anything on a target machine is searching registry and file system. I don't know how it is possible in VS setup project, but e.g. WiX has special elements for this (RegistrySearch, DirectorySearch, FileSearch). Basically, this post to WiX Tips and Tricks thread shows how to check for IIS6 compatibility in WiX and block the installation if it's not enables/installed. It's rather straight-forward even if you don't know WiX, but know the concepts of Windows Installer, and it can help you translate the code into the similar thing in VS setup project.
We seem to be having one negative impact on our servers.
Everytime we roll out a .NET 4.0 application with a msi made in Visual Studio, We get a recycle of ALL our application pools, even the ones not affected by the install.
Apparently the root cause of this is the IIS 6 compatibility. ( This was reported to us by a developer of microsoft in response to our support question about this.
At the moment we have no solution. It's impossible to convert all our installers to Wix.

Unable to run Visual Studio 2008 using Administrator account

I'm not able to run visual studio 2008 by choosing 'Run as a Administrator' it says 'Application Cannot start'. Any solutions please.
OS : Windows 7 64 bit
IIS 7.5
I've just come across a similar problem myself, where an external tool won't work when VS is run as admin. On my case, the tool tries to access a mapped network folder. Turns out that the mapping applies only for the non-admin login token. Does you VS happen to access a mapped network folder?
See: Programs may be unable to access some network locations after you turn on User Account Control in Windows Vista or in Windows 7. Link includes a possible solution.
BTW, the problem here is probably not VS-specific. Since it seems to regard Windows permissions, it should probably have been asked on ServerFault.
