Gantry is a good choice for a responsive Joomla template.
It may not be obvious but you need to install RokNavMenu as the default menu system in Gantry.
It's a free download from the RocketTheme website.

How would I move from the default ASP.NET layout to another theme

I just started to use MVC for a simple website. Very new to this.
I am trying to change from the default layout to a simple layout page with sidebar navigation with drop-down list capability. Something similar to one that is shown in the enter link description here
Could you please guide me through this? I have downloaded the HTML, CSS and js files.
I added them to the project and referred to them in the bundleconfig.cs. But still no success.
Thank you very much

CS-CART Themeing

I have been looking into using CS-CART as a shopping cart and started looking through the themes and it appears to me the only way to build a theme is to extend a default theme and use the theme editor and visual designer to construct themes. Is this the only way or is there a way to code custom themes without being limited to designing in the administration section?
The theme editor is intended to be used as a customization tool for the site administrator, not for the theme developer.
A theme may provide configuration for the theme editor - what colors can be changed, etc.
For the deep customization of how the site looks you can create you own theme with your own CSS code.
Check out this guide on how to create your custom theme - http://docs.cs-cart.com/4.3.x/designer_guide/theme_tutorial/index.html
Also there is an official Bootstrap 3 theme for CS-Cart which can be easily customized - https://github.com/cscart/cscart-boilerplate#the-cs-cart-boilerplate-theme
You are not limited, you have all the tools that you need to develop as you desire, the responsive theme is the base because this theme was tested enough so far and have good feedback and for somebody to start from scratch will take to much time and until you finish CS-Cart will do a big change and you will need to do another work ;)
Please check https://www.ambientlounge.ie and let me know if you find any limitations here :D
It's very easy modift cs-cart theme, cs-cart theme base on bootstrap and and smarty engine, firt you need looking for "index.tpl", "common/script.tpl", "common/style.tpl", "view/block_manager/render/grid.tpl || container.tpl || block.tpl || location.tpl. and you will understand cs-cart theme structure
You need to know smarty engine syntax here http://www.smarty.net/documentation
and cs-cart developer doc here http://docs.cs-cart.com/4.3.x/#designer-guide

How can I optimize this Joomla site for iPhone/iPad?

I want to show this site on iPhone or iPad just acceptable: www.uaeolimp.com.
Please tell me where to edit.
get a responsive-ready template. there's no go-responsive-NOW!1!!1! button anywhere.
Unfortunately, you will have to use a new responsive-ready template. The alternative is to completely gut your current template which would take an in-depth knowledge of css, html, php, the Joomla Platform and a responsive framework like Bootstrap (and wold take more time in the long run).
Here are a few great Joomla template houses to get you started:

How to use Joomla left sidebar position for a custom component menu

A client web site uses a Joomla template with lots of modules in the left column, but for the custom component I'm designing, those modules must be replaced by a vertical menu. The hack solution I came up with is to hide those modules with CSS:
div#leftpad > div {
display:none;
}
and then insert a <div id='compmenu'> in <div id='leftpad'> with javascript and set display:block. With jQuery, I could do
jQuery('#compmenu').appendTo('#leftpad').show();
The component displays a google map, so javascript is required anyway. Any Joomla experts here know of a more elegant or straightforward method to achieve the same result?
Why don't you use the build in Menu-Bind for Modules to hide them when your Module or Component is displayed, this would be a clean way. I think your Module/Comp is bound to a Menu item.
Edit:
For sure your client have to implement your Module/Comp the right way. Is is very bad to do something like this with a hack.
Create Menu-Item for your component (programtic)
Create a hidden menu
Add your component to that menu
Do unbound all modules from this menue
The Joomla API hold a good series of Tutorials about building components. I gone through them in the past but as I see they have improved them. As I understand your component is relatively straight forward so the default menu should be what you want. It is described in the install XML
<administration>
<!-- Administration Menu Section -->
<menu>MyMenuLink</menu>
<!-- some other stuff -->
</administration>
And will be available at the Joomla! menumanager after your client has installed your component. So I think it will be not that hard for you.
In Joomla, menu types are determined by the various Views specified by the installed components. If your component is properly coded to Joomla MVC standards, you should have at least one View, which will give you at least one menu type to choose from. As sra mentioned, even if you do not need a menu link, you should create a hidden menu so you can create a link so you have an itemID to work with and assign modules to.
There are a few extensions and websites that can help create the necessary files for a component so all you have to do is add a little code. Once you understand the Joomla MVC it's really not too difficult.
http://docs.joomla.org/Developing_a_Model-View-Controller_Component_-_Part_1
Doing it this way will save you a lot of headache later when the end user has to figure out how to use your component.

How can i integrate joomla media selector into a custom component

I'm writing a custom component for joomla 1.5 and i been searching for a way to integrate
com_media image selector into it.
All i want, is to have a functionality like, the image selection in the create article page.
Anyone knows how to do this?
Is there an API in joomla to do this, or do i have to see how is done in com_content an start
form there?
You can use a select box with image preview like the one used for the Sections and Categories thumbnails. This is much easier to integrate though images must come from single directory.
See the com_sections and com_content files in you Joomla Administrators components directory.
Also try posting this in the Joomla Forums.
