Has anyone used the link-checker gem?
I don't want to use it in a project I want to write a small script to test links on a web app.
I cant seem to figure out how to use it. Trying to require it doesn't work but saying gem 'link-checker' does result in true.
I'm getting nowhere trying to play with it in IRB. Can someone let me know what I am missing?
Did you read the documentation? Link-checker is a small script designed to check links already.
That page shows examples of it running from the command-line, not from inside IRB or Ruby code. In other words, it is a command-line app, not code you require:
Usage:
Just give it the target that you want it to scan. For example, if you have an Octopress site then your output HTML is in the public directory, so call it with:
check-links 'public'
Or if you want to check the links on a live site, then give it a URL instead:
check-links 'http://www.ryanalynporter.com'
If you don’t pass any target, then the default is to scan the “./” directory. If you have a Jekyll site that you deploy to GitHub Pages, then you can check the links with just:
check-links

Currently, I am working on a rails application which requires the user to be registered automatically in the moodle. I searched for it and found these gems,

But, nothing seems to work for me. I even searched on youtube but found nothing with the rails.
However, using the moodle_rb gem I was able to create an object which returned me the sites info using the sites_info function. Other than that I am unable to use any of the web services of the moodle. I have created an external service and added some functions like auth_email_get_signup_settings and auth_email_signup_user which accepts none parameters.
May anyone guides me through this? or even a minor help would also be great.
I am using a token to create the object.

Can you show us how you tried to configure your gems? For example, according to the docs the moddle-api gem requires a configuration like:
Moodle::Api.configure do|c|
c.host = 'http://my_moodle_instance.com'
c.token = 'mytoken'
end
If you did configure the gem like the above, can you show some of the code that you tried to call once the gem was installed and configured?
Recently I made a simple ruby application and have been using minitest to test it.
Following the advice of the Head First Ruby book, I automated this testing using Rake(I'll write what it told me to put in the Rakefile at the end of this post, in case that helps). The test seems to run fine (everything passes in a way I would expect it to), but I always get this notification at the end of it all:

Testing things manually by telling ruby to include which files I want, does not have this issue, only when I use "rake test" to test things.
As far as I can tell, this is related to when I set up Guard when I was following Michael Hartl's Rails Tutorial, at the end of chapter 3. I followed the directions for setting that up (correctly, as far as I can tell), and this was all in a completely different folder(ultimately my ruby and rails projects do have the same parent folder that they sit in, but are themselves in completely separate ruby_projects and rails_projects folders). If possible, I would like to stop this notification on my ruby application that I am testing. Is there a good way to do this?

My test file requires minitest/autorun, and the file for the application that I am testing, then has the normal tests
Seems like there's some weird conflict...
The reason is that Guard::Notifier.connect isn't connected. Normally, when you run guard, Guard.setup is called which does this.
If you're not using guard (e.g. interactively), then calling the following from your Rakefile should work around the problem:
Guard::Notifier.connect(notify: false, silent: true)
Guard::Notifier.disconnect
This will initialize the variable.
For a faster response, always report such issues on the project page on Github. If you can share the project where this occurs, maybe a better fix is possible. (It's best to provide a repository, since it really speeds up fixing things and often errors like this are very hard to simulate without the exact code).
We use Jira/Confluence as our wiki site. I've had a difficult time trying to figure out how to use the add. I'm guessing i'm missing something very obvious. When I go to this site: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DISC/Confluence4r to download the confluence4r file, not sure what I'm supposed to do thereafter. The file contains a module which makes sense why it doesn't do anything when running it. But should I being using the gem install functionality in some way? When I simply try to use it in a ruby script, i get the following error:
conf.rb:15:in `<main>': uninitialized constant Confluence (NameError)
Where I am supplying the information required per the script (URL, user & pass contained the correct values when used):
server = Confluence::Server.new("https://collab.sitename.com")
server.login("user", "pass")
puts server.getSpaces()
Any information how to get the working is appreciated.
Confluence4r isn't distributed as a rubygem, it's just a ruby script you can drop onto your filesystem and reference directly.
If you put Confluence4r.rb in the same directory as your own script, you'd need to require it like this:
require './confluence4r.rb'
You shouldn't need the "confluence" and "confluence-client" rubygems to use confluence4r; it's just a very thin wrapper around the Confluence XML-RPC API.
I have a few Ruby scripts that process text files in different ways, that many of my friends find useful. However, most of the people I know are not comfortable running scripts on the command line. The easiest thing for them would be to create a simple webpage where people could upload a file, select a few options, have it processed, and then download the result.
I know it wouldn't be too hard to build something like this in Rails or Merb or something like that, however it seems like a very common problem, so I was wondering if there was already some kind of template, or similar application that I could easily modify, i.e. let the user upload a file, choose a few options, then {fill in code to do something with file}, let the user download the resulting file?
In the past I used Carrierwave to upload user avatars.
If you are used to Rails it's really straightforward.
Let it be a TextFile resource:
gem 'carrierwave'
$ rails g scaffold textfile content:string title:string etc etc
$ rails g uploader textfile
class TextFile < ActiveRecord::Base

mount_uploader :content, TextFileUploader
end
And that is is pretty much all you have to do to obtain the app's skeleton. However, to answer your real question, no, I don't think there is already a rails app that does exactly that.

I found sinatra-fileupload, which pretty perfectly answers my question. It's a very minimalistic framework which works perfectly, I can just plug in the file handling, and change the layout etc a bit. There were many examples of sophisticated Rails plugins linked to databases, with versioning and stuff, but I really wanted the most minimal example.
I am using the selenium-client gem with Webrat and Cucumber to test a rails project. I have Cucumber set up pretty much as described here: https://github.com/cucumber/cucumber/wiki/Setting-up-Selenium
My problem is that Selenium is prevented from performing file uploads. Ideally I'd like to be able to replicate webrat's 'attach_file' method. I tried dodging the issue by using selenium-client's 'type' method to type the path to the required file, but this seems to fail.
Does anyone have a sugestion for a workaround using selenium-client (i.e. not the regular Selenium gem)?
The normal selenium can't do this because browser security prevents javascript from writing to input=file elements. This is a security feature so that your password file doesnt get uploaded to hackers if you go to a site thats been hacked.

I finally figured this out.
You need to be using firefox with the chrome backend, and you need to specifiy an absolute filepath.
I ended up creating a helper module to specify the filepath, and a "fixtures" folder containing test content. Here is a gist of the solution I came up with: http://gist.github.com/214185
Therefore it is totally possible to replicate Webrat's attach_file method!
