My VS2010 environment has the start page come up if I'm not opening a solution. From there, I can open one of the several items on the recent projects list or I can open a project from the link/button in the upper left. When I do that, I get an Open Project dialog that's pointed at my C:\workingvss (which is a convention that everyone on my team follows for where our code lives locally). But I virtually always want to browse to the project in a VSS database and I have to scroll up in the left-hand pane of the dialog to bring 'Microsoft Visual SourceSafe' into visibility. It seems dumb that I can't make it just start at the top of the pane, but if there's a way, I haven't been able to figure out how.
So I'm turning to you. Is there something I can do to avoid this click and drag every time I want to open a project?
I realize it's defaulting to the Projects location parameter set through Tools > Options > Projects and Solutions > General. But I think I need to leave that as is because I do want my stuff saved to that location during checkout.
I also think that if I removed ten (in my case) folders from the root of my C:, the left pane would show my VSS option, but I don't think that's even possible in this machine's case and not a reasonable solution in any case.

This isn't a great answer, but it's my current no-tech work-around. If I make the Open Project dialog large enough to accommodate all of the lines it wants to display, then my VSS line is visible and I don't have to navigate to it. Luckily, Visual Studio remembers the size from use to use.

I'm new to Visual Studio, but have used several other IDE's over the years. I'm stunned by the poor out-of-the-box management of files, filters and "presentation" of coding, and now trying to find if there's a way to customize it the way I've found to be optimal for me.
First off, when programming C++, I'd like for the IDE to use a vertically split automatic view. Dragging and dropping a view to the right side giving me a "static" split is no problem, but that file will stay there untouched until I open another file while in this active view.
What I want is to make it so that when I click a .cpp-file in the explorer, it will show up in the left view - and its corresponding header-file will show in the right view. Likewise, when clicking a header-file, I'd want it to be presented in the right view and the corresponding .cpp-file to show in the left view. If either doesn't exist, just show a blank screen on its side.
When ctrl-clicking a class name, I'd want both the cpp and header-file to be presented, cpp on left and header on right.
Is this not possible?
The second thing that grinds my gears is the solution explorer. I simply don't understand the value of the filter system. I surely do not want every single .cpp file lined up alphabetically under each other, and every single header-file alphabetically another place. I want the explorer to replicate the folder structure as-is. And let me create a file in "src/my_folder/" by right-clicking "my_folder" and add->new item.
I've found that I can click "Switch views" and select "Folder view", but doing this seems to also invalidate the "Solution" and any configurations etc. The solution is literally gone, and the Build/Run-command switches to "Current document" and is completely detached from the project itself.
The closest option I've found is to be in "Solution view" and select "Show all files". The problem is that this shows literally all files and folders, including "output-folders", "hidden" and completely irrelevant files and folders that I don't want here. And I'm naturally not able to "hide" these files, as this is an option to "show all files".
Xcode on Mac has both of these features (and more snacks) pretty flawlessly implemented, and is my all-time favorite IDE per now.
Is there any way to replicate these features in Visual Studio?
When having Visual studio (2017) in full screen (shift-alt-enter) the solution's name is not visible. Has anyone found a way to append it to the menu?
One can open the solution explorer and scroll to the top but I would like to be able to see the solution's name without manual interaction.
Change the solution name in the solution explorer, then clean the solution and rebuild it and it should show up there.

I am using a plugin to do something similar.
Meet file path on footer. This plugin, will display the full path of your file (that includes your solution) and works of course even while on fullscreen mode. Plus, you got an easy way to visit the folder.
Question:
Is there a way to make all files that are open in visual studio be highlighted in the solution explorer?
(I know there is a filter that you can filter it to show only open files but this dos me no good sense I am looking for a file that may not be open, I am not even sure what the name of the file is until I open it up and say there it is.)

Background:
I don't know if this happens to any one else, but I have been doing it a lot for years now. While working on something I go to open up a file in the solution explorer and it turns out that the file is already open, and so visual studios just sets that file as the active tab. If I were working In just one window that would be fine, but I have few tab windows open beyond the main window and they are normally on a diffident monitor, so when the tab becomes active I do not see it at all, because it is not on the main window. This is even worse when I go to preview a file.
Icing on this cake:
-If it would have an option to highlight the parent nodes of open files, i the example "controllers" and "content" folders would be highlighted as well.
-If there was something that would do this for vs 2010 as well would be great.
I am looking for all most any thing at this point, an extension, a style sheet some where to edit, or as a last resort a good reference to a "How to code Extensions for Visual studios" website.

As a point Of clarification I am not looking for a way to locate a specific file in the solution explorer, I am looking for a way to make the files that are open look visually different, so that I know to look around a bit before thinking that VS2012 is crashing or the file is messed up.
try an extension called VS commands. It will help you locate the files in solution.

The solution I work on is quite big so it can require a lot of clicks to get to the desired file. I spend 90% of the time working with 8-10 files from this solution so it would be really convenient to have some kind of "Favorites" in my solution so I could jump to the most used files quickly. "Recent files" doesn't cut it, so maybe you know some extensions for VS2010 that do that? Google didn't provide any good options so I decided to give it a shot here and ask what do you use.

It's not quite what you asked for, but it'll help endlessly:
In vanilla VS2010, hit Ctrl-Comma (by default) for the "Navigate To" window. You can type a partial file, class or method name and it'll show you a list of where that appears in your solution, and you can open directly from there.
The DevExpress plugins also have a "Recently Used File" window (Ctrl-Shift-Period by default, I think) that does similar, but only shows files you've recently used (not classes or methods). I have to say, though, I've not used that since I've had VS2010.

from the Bookmarks Window, click the icon "Toggle a bookmark on the current line."

Every time you start Visual Studio, the first time you click "Add Reference" to add a DLL reference to a project, by default, the .NET tab on that dialog box is selected. As most people reading this have probably noticed, it can take a long time -- often more than 30 seconds -- for the full list of .NET components to fill in.
Because of the way we're designing our solutions, though, about 80% of the time, I want to select either from the "Projects" tab or from the "Browse" tab.
Is there a setting anywhere in Visual Studio that will let me make "Projects" be the first tab that loads up? Does anyone know any other, hidden tricks to accomplish the same effect?
I use this tip to do this in a different way. Open your Object Browser (Cntrl + Alt + J). Change Browse dropdown to "My Solution". Select the project you want. On Toolbar, click "Add to References in Selected Project in Solution Explorer".
A neat work around which has saved me many hours.
If you have the PowerCommands for Visual Studio 2008 installed, there is functionality to copy-paste references between projects, as well as copy-paste individual projects as references, all without opening the references dialog.
I have never found anywhere that allows you to change the default tab. And yeah, it's annoying how long that window can take to load. I think this is something that we just have to live with.

Another tip you might consider is that if you reference a type in another project, ReSharper will notice it and offer to add it to your references for you.
With this, I never visit that tab unless I have file dll references to add.
I am afraid the answer, as far as I can tell, is no. I even took a trip through the registry to determine if there was someway to reorder the tabs. You might be able to do it with a hex editor but I would advise against that.
