read line from file and save them in a comma separated string to a variable - bash

I want to read lines from a text file and save them in a variable.
cat ${1} | while read name; do
namelist=${name_list},${name}
done
the file looks like this:
David
Kevin
Steve
etc.
and i want to get this output instead
David, Kevin, Steve etc.
and save it to the variable ${name_list}

The command:
$ tr -s '\n ' ',' < sourcefile.txt # Replace newlines and spaces with [,]
This will likely return a , as the last character (and potentially the first).
To shave of the comma(s) and return a satisfying result:
$ name_list=$(tr -s '\n ' ',' < sourcefile.txt) # store the previous result
$ name_list=${tmp%,} # shave off the last comma
$ name_list=${tmp#,} # shave off any first comma
EDIT
This solution runs 44% faster and yields consistent and valid results across all Unix platforms.

I have a parameters.ini file, such as:
[parameters.ini]
database_user = user
database_version = 20110611142248
I want to read in and use the database version specified in the parameters.ini file from within a bash shell script so I can process it.

How about grepping for that line then using awk

You can use bash native parser to interpret ini values, by:
$ source <(grep = file.ini)
Sample file:
[section-a]
var1=value1
var2=value2
IPS=( "1.2.3.4" "1.2.3.5" )
To access variables, you simply printing them: echo $var1. You may also use arrays as shown above (echo ${IPS[#]}).
If you only want a single value just grep for it:
source <(grep var1 file.ini)

It is simple as you don't need for any external library to parse the data, but it comes with some disadvantages. For example:
If you have spaces between = (variable name and value), then you've to trim the spaces first, e.g.
$ source <(grep = file.ini | sed 's/ *= */=/g')
Or if you don't care about the spaces (including in the middle), use:
$ source <(grep = file.ini | tr -d ' ')
To support ; comments, replace them with #:
$ sed "s/;/#/g" foo.ini | source /dev/stdin
The sections aren't supported (e.g. if you've [section-name], then you've to filter it out as shown above, e.g. grep =), the same for other unexpected errors.
If you need to read specific value under specific section, use grep -A, sed, awk or ex).
E.g.
source <(grep = <(grep -A5 '\[section-b\]' file.ini))
Note: Where -A5 is the number of rows to read in the section. Replace source with cat to debug.
If you've got any parsing errors, ignore them by adding: 2>/dev/null

^ -- pattern begins at the beginning of the line
\s -- whitespace character
* -- zero or many (whitespace characters)

So:
Find a pattern where the line begins with zero or many whitespace characters,
followed by the string my_key, followed by zero or many whitespace characters, an equal sign, then zero or many whitespace characters again. Display the rest of the content on that line following that pattern.
Similar to the other Python answers, you can do this using the -c flag to execute a sequence of Python statements given on the command line:

You can use sed to parse the ini configuration file, especially when you've section names like:

For people (like me) looking to read INI files from shell scripts (read shell, not bash) - I've knocked up the a little helper library which tries to do exactly that:

It's somewhat more "complicated" than the simple sed lines suggested above - but works on a very similar basis.
Function reads in a file line-by-line - looking for section markers ([section]) and key/value declarations (key=value).
Ultimately you get a callback to your own function - section, key and value.
Here is my version, which parses sections and populates a global associative array g_iniProperties with it.
Note that this works only with bash v4.2 and higher.

Some of the answers don't respect comments. Some don't respect sections. Some recognize only one syntax (only ":" or only "="). Some Python answers fail on my machine because of differing captialization or failing to import the sys module. All are a bit too terse for me.
So I wrote my own, and if you have a modern Python, you can probably call this from your Bash shell. It has the advantage of adhering to some of the common Python coding conventions, and even provides sensible error messages and help. To use it, name it something like myconfig.py (do NOT call it configparser.py or it may try to import itself,) make it executable, and call it like
value=$(myconfig.py something.ini sectionname value)

I wrote a quick and easy python script to include in my bash script.
For example, your ini file is called food.ini
and in the file you can have some sections and some lines:

Copy this small 6 line Python script and save it as configparser.py

This implementation uses awk and has the following advantages:
Will only return the first matching entry
Ignores lines that start with a ;
Trims leading and trailing whitespace, but not internal whitespace

Just finished writing my own parser. I tried to use various parser found here, none seems to work with both ksh93 (AIX) and bash (Linux).
It's old programming style - parsing line by line. Pretty fast since it used few external commands. A bit slower because of all the eval required for dynamic name of the array.
The ini support 3 special syntaxs:
includefile=ini file -->
Load an additionnal ini file. Useful for splitting ini in multiple files, or re-use some piece of configuration
includedir=directory -->
Same as includefile, but include a complete directory
includesection=section -->
Copy an existing section to the current section.
I used all thoses syntax to have pretty complex, re-usable ini file. Useful to install products when installing a new OS - we do that a lot.
Values can be accessed with ${ini[$section.$item]}. The array MUST be defined before calling this.

When I use a password in base64, I put the separator ":" because the base64 string may has "=". For example (I use ksh):

This thread does not have enough solutions to choose from, thus here my solution, it does not require tools like sed or awk :

If your are to expect sections with more than 999 lines, feel free to adapt the example above. Note that you may want to trim the resulting value, to remove spaces or a comment string after the value. Remove the ^ if you need to match keys that do not start at the beginning of the line, as in the example of the question. Better, match explicitly for white spaces and tabs, in such a case.
If you have multiple values in a given section you want to read, but want to avoid reading the file multiple times:

Convert multi-line csv to single line using Linux tools

I have a .csv file that contains double quoted multi-line fields. I need to convert the multi-line cell to a single line. It doesn't show in the sample data but I do not know which fields might be multi-line so any solution will need to check every field. I do know how many columns I'll have. The first line will also need to be skipped. I don't how much data so performance isn't a consideration.
I need something that I can run from a bash script on Linux. Preferably using tools such as awk or sed and not actual programming languages.
The data will be processed further with Logstash but it doesn't handle double quoted multi-line fields hence the need to do some pre-processing.
I tried something like this and it kind of works on one row but fails on multiple rows.

First my apologies for getting here 7 months late...
I came across a problem similar to yours today, with multiple fields with multi-line types. I was glad to find your question but at least for my case I have the complexity that, as more than one field is conflicting, quotes might open, close and open again on the same line... anyway, reading a lot and combining answers from different posts I came up with something like this:
First I count the quotes in a line, to do that, I take out everything but quotes and then use wc:
quotes=`echo $line | tr -cd '"' | wc -c` # Counts the quotes
If you think of a single multi-line field, knowing if the quotes are 1 or 2 is enough. In a more generic scenario like mine I have to know if the number of quotes is odd or even to know if the line completes the record or expects more information.
To check for even or odd you can use the mod operand (%), in general:
even % 2 = 0
odd % 2 = 1
For the first line:
Odd means that the line expects more information on the next line.
Even means the line is complete.
For the subsequent lines, I have to know the status of the previous one. for instance in your sample text:
First name,Last name,Address,ZIP
John,Doe,"Country
City
Street",12345
You can say line 1 (John,Doe,"Country) has 1 quote (odd) what means the status of the record is incomplete or open.
When you go to line 2, there is no quote (even). Nevertheless this does not mean the record is complete, you have to consider the previous status... so for the lines following the first one it will be:
Odd means that record status toggles (incomplete to complete).
Even means that record status remains as the previous line.
What I did was looping line by line while carrying the status of the last line to the next one:

Recovering the multi-line fields
Every need is different, in my case I wanted the records in one line to further process the csv to add some bash-extracted data, but I would like to keep the csv as it was. To accomplish that, instead of joining the lines with a space I used a code - likely unique - that I could then search and replace:

the code is ~newline~, this is totally arbitrary of course.

This might work for you (GNU sed):

Test each line to see that it contains the correct number of fields (in the example that was 4). If there are not enough fields, append the next line and repeat the test. Otherwise, replace the newline(s) by spaces and finally remove the "'s.
N.B. This may be fraught with problems such as ,'s between "'s and quoted "'s.
Try cat -v file.csv. When the file was made with Excel, you might have some luck: When the newlines in a field are a simple \n and the newline at the end is a \r\n (which will look like ^M), parsing is simple.
# delete all newlines and replace the ^M with a new newline.
tr -d "\n" < file.csv| tr "\r" "\n"
# Above two steps with one command
tr "\n\r" " \n" < file.csv
When you want a space between the joined line, you need an additional step.

When your broken lines also have ^M you still can be a lucky (wo-)man.
When your broken field is always the first field in double quotes and you have GNU sed 4.2.2, you can join 2 lines when the first line has exactly one double quote.
sed -rz ':a;s/(\n|^)([^"]*)"([^"]*)\n/\1\2"\3 /;ta' file.csv
Explanation:
-z don't use \n as line endings
:a label for repeating the step after successful replacement
(\n|^) Search after a newline or the very first line
([^"]*) Substring without a "

I have a problem with the sed command inside the for loop. I looked around and people suggest adding double quotes which I did but to no avail. I think it might be the $p.

My desired output is basically this file from "0 1" till the end preceded by the stuff I put inside the printf.
UPDATE: If you're interested, the two scripts tripleee and Ed Morton provided work perfectly well. The problem in my script was me leaving out the -i option from the sed line (for inplace).

If you don't have GNU awk then the technically correct way to do it is using xargs but it's simpler using a shell loop for the file manipulation (moving) part:

Like others have already commented, you basically just need to use single quotes instead of double, because $p in double quotes gets replaced with the value of the shell variable p by the shell, before sed executes (in practice, probably an empty string).
However, you might also want to investigate doing it all in sed. You might then instead stick with the double quotes (because there are other variables you do want to substitute) and instead escape the dollar sign in $p with a backslash to protect it from the shell.

In practice, I imagine you would like for the output file to be different in each iteration (maybe "$filename.temp" instead?) but what you do about that is up to you, obviously. As it is now, the file will contain the output from the last iteration.

KSH: Loop performance

I need to process a file with approximately 120k lines that has the following format using ksh:

At last I tried this code which processed the 120k lines in 3secs!

How about:
tr ';' '\n' < file | tr -d '"'
Your code is assigning every whitespace-delimited word to variable "a" in turn, and thus invoking sed once for each word in the file. Clearly a lot of accumulated overhead spawning all those processes. The idiom to iterate over the lines of a file is:
while IFS= read -r line; do ...; done < file

Setting a BASH environment variable directly in AWK (in an AWK one-liner)

I have a file that has two columns of floating point values. I also have a C program that takes a floating point value as input and returns another floating point value as output.
What I'd like to do is the following: for each row in the original, execute the C program with the value in the first column as input, and then print out the first column (unchanged) followed by the second column minus the result of the C program.
As an example, suppose c_program returns the square of the input and behaves like this:
$ c_program 4
16
$
and suppose data_file looks like this:
1 10
2 11
3 12
4 13
What I'd like to return as output, in this case, is
1 9
2 7
3 3
4 -3
To write this in really sketchy pseudocode, I want to do something like this:
awk '{print $1, $2 - `c_program $1`}' data_file
But of course, I can't just pass $1, the awk variable, into a call to c_program. What's the right way to do this, and preferably, how could I do it while still maintaining the "awk one-liner"? (I don't want to pull out a sledgehammer and write a full-fledged C program to do this.)
you just do everything in awk

This shows how to execute a command in awk:

You could use a bash script instead:

The shell is a better tool for this using a little used feature. There is a shell variable IFS which is the Input Field Separator that sh uses to split command lines when parsing; it defaults to <Space><Tab><Newline> which is why ls foo is interpreted as two words.
When set is given arguments not beginning with - it sets the positional parameters of the shell to the contents of the arguments as split via IFS, thus:

Pure Bash, without using any external executables other than your program:

As others have pointed out: awk is not not well equipped for this job. Here is a suggestion in bash:

Save this to a file, say myscript.sh, then invoke it as:
sh myscript.sh data_file
The read command reads each line from the data file (which was redirected to the standard input) and assign the first 2 columns to $column_1 and $column_2 variables. The rest of the line, if there is any, is stored in $the_rest.
Next, I calculate the result based on your requirements and prints out the line based on your requirements. Note that I surround $the_rest with quotes to reserve spacing. Failure to do so will result in multiple spaces in the input file to be squeezed into one.
