Keep record of what users do in Spring MVC - spring

I have a very large application written in Spring MVC. I want to keep an "activity record" that tracks into a database what users do in my application.
In the first stage I just want an activity log, it can be just a list of the controller methods that get called during user's actions, but later on I would like this info to be more "human readable", i.e. instead of "modifyAccount(accountId = 5, accountBalance =500) something like "user X updates balance for account 5 to 500".
The problem I see is, since my application is very large, I would not like to modify each of my actions to add this logging mechanism. Is there a more flexible, declarative way to do this?

You can make use of Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) to automate the logging.

In the above page shows many examples on how to use AOP with spring. One example is the use of annotations to find methods you're interested in. The use of such annotation is an easy way to determine what methods should be logged.

Putting Spring WebFlux Publisher inside Model, good or bad practice?

I'm working on a code audit on a SpringBoot Application with Spring WebFlux and the team is putting Publisher directly inside the Model and then resolve the view.
I'm wondering if it is a good or bad practice because it seems to be working but in that case, which component is in charge of executing the Publisher ?
I think that it's the ViewResolver and it should not be its job. What do you think ?
Moreover, if the Publisher is not executed by the Controller, the classes annotated by #ControllerAdvice such like ExceptionHandler won't work if these Publisher return an error, right ?

Doesn't come as a shock to me.
Actually seems to be a good trade off between complexity and efficiency when the Publisher is handling complex stuff.
It has the advantage of executing the Publisher only if and when needed.
Although it might be a problem if the ModelMap handler does not have the capacity to use it properly.
As for the exceptional cases, maybe you do not want it to be executed and just printed, thus failing faster.
As for the question about what is executing the Publisher, a specific ViewResolver can be used as it is the component responsible for the "rendering". IMHO that's it's job. I do not know if a standard ViewResolver can be used for detecting values vs publishers and handle those automagically, yet this seems completely doable and efficient.

How to use Spring AOP's Aspect to do very complex audit logging?

I'm building a Spring web application. Using Spring AOP's aspect to do audit logging.
I've got business class with methods like the following and i want to audit log in certain cases

I've already got Aspects defined in a separate class.
I'm having problems because all the common simple examples i've seen on here and on other articles seemed to be very simple. For example, they work easily because the most complicated i've seen only go as far as extracting method params into the aspect's advice..
But my problem here is that i wan't to somehow not just extract local variables into the Aspect's advice but do the audit logging more than once and also based on certain conditions.
Don't get me wrong, we've already got Log4j logging to log to file in the same places but we also require to do these audit logging to DB too.
I just want to know what's the solution to achieve what i want to do in a high level.

Identifying Spring MVC architecture pattern

I'd like to learn more about the specifics of the exact architecture being used and am having trouble identifying the proper name - so that I can read further.
For example, I understand that the presentation layer is MVC, but not really sure how you would more specifically describe the pattern to account for the use of service and resource objects - as opposed to choosing to use service, DAO and Domain objects.
Any clues to help me better focus my search on understanding the layout below?

As far as I can tell the layout you have mentioned represents the application which communicates with the world through REST services.
core package represents all the classes (domain, services, repositories) which are not related to view.
model package - Assuming you are aiming for the typical application you do have a model/domain/entity package which represents your data For example: https://github.com/chrishenkel/spring-angularjs-tutorial-10/blob/master/src/main/java/tutorial/core/models/entities/Account.java.
repository package - Since you are using Spring you will most likely use also since spring-data or even spring-data-jpa with Hibernate as your ORM Library. It will most likely lead you to use Repository interfaces (author of videos you watch for some reason decided not to use it though). service package will be your package to manipulate data. It's not the best example but this layer doesn't access your database directly, it will use Repositories to do it, but it might also do other things - it will be your API to manipulate data in you application. Let's say you want to have a fancy calculation on your wallet before you save it to DB, or like here https://github.com/chrishenkel/spring-angularjs-tutorial-10/blob/master/src/main/java/tutorial/core/services/impl/AccountServiceImpl.java you want to make sure that the Blog you try to create doesn't exist yet.
controllers package contain all classes which will be used by DispacherServlet to take care of the requests. You will read "input" from the request, process it (use your Services here) and send your responses.
resource_assemblers package in this case is framework specific (Hateoas). As far as I can tell it's just a DTO for your json responses (for example you might want to store password in your Account but exposing it through json won't be a good idea, and it would happen if you didn't use DTO).

You are mostly talking about the same things in each case, Spring just uses annotations so that when it scans them it knows what type of object you are creating or instantiating.
Basically everything request flows through the controller annotated with #Controller. Each method process the request and (if needed) calls a specific service class to process the business logic. These classes are annotated with #Service. The controller can instantiate these classes by autowiring them in #Autowire or resourcing them #Resource.

The service classes then perform their business logic and if needed, retrieve data from a repository class annotated with #Repository. The service layer instantiate these classes the same way, either by autowiring them in #Autowire or resourcing them #Resource.

The repository classes make up the DAO, Spring uses the #Repository annotation on them. The entities are the individual class objects that are received by the #Repository layer.

#Repository, #Service, and #Controller are specific instances of #Component. All of these layers could be annotated with #Component, it's just better to call it what it actually is.
So to answer your question, they mean the same thing, they are just annotated to let Spring know what type of object it is instantiating and/or how to include another class.

Check preconditions in Controller or Service layer

I'm using Google's Preconditions class to validate user's input data.
But I'm worried about where is the best point of checking user's input data using Preconditions class.
First, I wrote validation check code in Controller like below:

Ideally you would do it in both places. But you are confusing two different things:
Validation (with error handling)
Defensivie Programming (aka assertions, aka design by contract).
You absolutely should do validation in the controller and defensive programming in your service. And here is why.
You need to validate for forms and REST requests so that you can send a sensible error back to the client. This includes what fields are bad and then doing localization of the error messages, etc... (your current example would send me a horrible 500 error message with a stack trace if ProductInfo.name property was null).
Spring has a solution for validating objects in the controller.
Defensive programming is done in the service layer BUT NOT validation because you don't have access to locale to generate proper error messages. Some people do but Spring doesn't really help you there.
The other reason why validation is not done in the service layer is that the ORM already typically does this through the JSR Bean Validation spec (hibernate) but it doesn't generate sensible error messages.
One strategy people do is to create their own preconditions utils library that throws custom derived RuntimeExceptions instead of guava's (and commons lang) IllegalArgumentException and IllegalStateException and then try...catch the exceptions in the controller converting them to validation error messages.
There is no "better" way. If you think that the service is going to be used by multiple controllers (or other pieces of code), then it may well make sense to do the checks there. If it's important to your application to check invalid requests while they're still in the controller, it may well make sense to do the checks there. These two, as you have noticed, are not mutually exclusive. You might have to check twice to cover both scenarios.
Another possible solution: use Bean Validation (JSR-303) to put the checks (preconditions) onto the ProductInfo bean itself. That way you only specify the checks once, and anything that needs to can quickly validate the bean.
Preconditions, validations, whether simple or business should be handled at the filter layer or by interceptors, even before reaching the controller or service layer.
The danger if you check it in your controller layer, you are violating the single responsibility principle of a controller, whose sole purpose is to delegate request and response.
Putting preconditions in service layer is introducing cross cutting concerns to the core business.
Filter or inceptor is built for this purpose. Putting preconditions at the filter layer or in interceptors also allow you to “pick and match” rules you can place in the stack for each servlet request, thus not confining a particular rule to only one servlet request or introduce duplication.
I think in your special case you need to to check it on Service layer and return exception to Controller in case of data integrity error.

Can I inject code in spring using AOP annotations?

Is it possible to do something like the following:

I know that Spring has various sorts of AOP support, but the best I could find was AOP code which was annotated so that it would execute before or after a specific method. I want to do the inverse and annotate the code that should be changed.
Ultimately I could just do the above check inside the method, but the annotation way of doing things provides additional documentation which makes it obvious that the user requires a particular privilege without having to keep the documentation in sync with the code.
You can look at using AspectJ for doing this, as it will match on annotations. You can then use an around aspect to decide if the user meets the requirements to use this method.
Spring allows you to use AspectJ, and I would suggest that if possible you not do this at run-time, but at compile-time, as there is no reason to pay the price for using this aspect whenever you start the application. But, if you must do it at run-time then that is doable, to me I try to use compile-time as much as possible.

I'm certain that your "insufficient privileges" example can be done with Spring AOP, because that's how Spring Security works. You can do some very sophisticated things with around advice and AspectJ.
