Tell gradle to bypass dependency checks - gradle

I am at a clients site, behind a firewall. Im trying to compile but gradle keeps trying to check my dependencies. The corporate firewall explicitly blocks maven downloads so my build is failing. Now I have compiled before, so the dependencies do already exist in my [user]/.gradle folder, but its been more than 24 hours so gradle is trying to do its daily "lets check the repo and make sure nothing changed stuff."
Is there a command switch or anything that im just simply not seeing here to tell gradle to bypass this version check and simply compile the code? I would even be happy with a command switch that says I don't care if dependency resolution failed, compile anyways.

Try the --offline command line switch.

You still have to get it to compile once to grab the dependencies online, so --offline only works once you have compiled successfully one time.
The only way I was able to get this to work was to tether my phone to my machine and connect to my cellular service for internet instead. That way, I bypassed my company's proxy and firewall and was able to download the dependencies once.
After that, I was able to then compile when connected to the corporate network instead. Just don't clean your project or else you'll be back where you are right now.

I found this question because I wanted to short-circuit the Maven dependency checks in a git pre-commit hook that runs gradle check for better performance. I ended up doing:
if ! ( gradle --offline check || gradle check ); then
exit 1
fi
which tries once with --offline, and then tries again without --offline if the first try fails.

Momentarily kill or restart Gradle Daemon from inside IntelliJ IDEA? "gradle --stop" doesn't work

IntelliJ IDEA 2021.1 and 2021.2 leaves the Gradle Daemon running when I exit the program. I would like to know if there is a way to momentarily stop or restart the Gradle Daemon from within IntelliJ without exiting. Gradle has a lock on files that doesn't go away when simply closing IntelliJ. The only way to get it to release the lock is to run gradle --stop from the version of Gradle that is currently running. The approaches I've found so far are far less than ideal. I'll share them in case they help anyone else, but I'm hoping there's a better way.
If I manually browse to my User Home.gradle\wrapper\dists\gradle-x.y.z-all<hash>\gradle-x.y.z\bin for the version of Gradle that I know IntelliJ is using, then I can manually run that gradle command with --stop flag and it will stop the daemon. So, yeah I guess I could create a batch script for this, but the fact that it is stored in such a buried directory involving some sort of hash code, I don't really want to have to change this script for different systems.
In InteliJ IDEA, If I click the "elephant" looking button at the top of the gradle menu called "Execute Gradle Task" it brings up a command line that starts with "gradle", but it only accepts established task names, it doesn't accept "gradle --stop". It gives the error Unknown command-line option '--stop'.
As a less than ideal work around, I have copied the gradle-x.y.z folder from near the end of that path to c:\Gradle\ and I have added that version's bin folder to the PATH environment variable. So, at least, I can open up a command prompt and run gradle --stop for now. This becomes problematic when I want my default / command line accessible gradle version to be different from the project I am working on. Yeah I could create a bunch of custom batch scripts that point to all different versions. That doesn't sound like fun. I have a hard time believing that I can't do something within IntelliJ to get the currently running gradle daemon to shutdown.
IDE does not kill Gradle daemon, because this demon can be reused by another build, including when doing a build from the command line.

Groovy install HTTPBuilder now that Codehaus shutdown?

I'm a groovy n00b and trying to use http-builder, but ALL of the examples on the web just reference the same #Grab statement which doesn't work. I assume it is because codehaus.org isn't hosting groovy stuff anymore. I've tried downloading the source from github and building it with Maven, but the build fails.
How and where am I supposed to get httpbuilder for groovy?

Deleting the grapes directory from this post didn't work.
I got this code snippet from this other post, but it doesn't work for me either.

I wondered if it was Mac related, and bingo. I uploaded this script to my CentOS server and it ran just fine. There is something related to MacOSX+groovy that is causing the problem.
Got it! It looks like it was the maven cache that was the problem.
I found the solution on this page:
rm -rf ~/.m2/repository ~/.groovy/grapes
I had previously tried removing the ~/.groovy/grapes cache, but that didn't fix the problem. Removing the ~/.m2/repository is what actually did it for me.
This works fine from the groovy console and from the command line.
The http-builder project is hosted on Maven Central.
Grab will actually use JCenter, but JCenter mirrors Maven Central so this resolution works.
Not sure why you would have trouble resolving transitive dependencies... it may be that you are using a proxy, for example... could also be your settings for Maven or Ivy... Check the Groovy Grapes documentation to see if you might inadvertently have something configured that causes this problem.
Also, try from groovyConsole or the command-line to rule out some conflicts within IntelliJ.
From IntelliJ, point to the Grab annotation and hit Alt+Enter. Then select grab artifacts and Enter.
It should work (works for me) and you should be able to run the script without problems.
If it complains about Ivy not being in the classpath, just add Ivy to the module dependencies and it will work.

How to use/start the gradle daemon on a Mac?

Every time I execute a gradle command on Mac I get a message saying:
"This build could be faster, please consider using the Gradle Daemon: https://docs.gradle.org/2.10/userguide/gradle_daemon.html"
I've created a gradle.properties file with the line org.gradle.daemon=true as mentioned in the web page given in the message. However no matter what I do, I still continue to get that message.
If I execute the command
gradle --daemon
then it executes successfully, but still next time I do something I get that message about it could be faster and builds are just as slow as before I started the daemon.
My installation directory is no /Users/username as in gradle_daemon.html as I'm falling a Udacity course (https://www.udacity.com/course/viewer#!/c-ud867/) and they recommend installing it to /usr/local/gradle
How can I actually get the gradle dameon to work and get rid of that could be faster message?

just put
org.gradle.daemon=true
in the ~/.gradle/gradle.properties file. Then each build on your machine will use the gradle wrapper and the message dissapears.
The page doesn't say anywhere that gradle must be installed in /Users/username. It says that this directory is your home directory, and that's where the .gradle/gradle.properties file must be located. The place where gradle is installed is irrelevant.

how to force maven to update local repo

I compiled a jar file in one project so it can be consumed in the 2nd one. I can see the jar file in .m2 folder. But in the 2nd project it complains about artifact not found.
I guess I have to force maven to update indices/cache something but don't know what exactly. Any tip, thanks.

Turns out that the maven plugin (of IntelliJ) in the second project doesn't update its index. I use command line it compiled ok.
try using -U (aka --update-snapshots) when you run maven
And make sure the dependency definition is correct
You can also use this command on the command line:
mvn dependency:purge-local-repository clean install
If you are installing into local repository, there is no special index/cache update needed.
Make sure that:
You have installed the first artifact in your local repository properly. Simply copying the file to .m2 may not work as expected. Make sure you install it by mvn install
The dependency in 2nd project is setup correctly. Check on any typo in groupId/artifactId/version, or unmatched artifact type/classifier.
Even though this is an old question, I 've stumbled upon this issue multiple times and until now never figured out how to fix it. The update maven indices is a term coined by IntelliJ, and if it still doesn't work after you've compiled the first project, chances are that you are using 2 different maven installations.
Press CTRL+Shift+A to open up the Actions menu. Type Maven and go to Maven Settings. Check the Home Directory to use the same maven as you use via the command line
Click settings and search for "Repositories", then select the local repo and click "Update". That's all. This action meets my need.
If you are struggling with authenticating to a site, and Maven is caching the results, simply removing the meta-data about the site from the meta-data stash will force Maven to revisit the site.

how to prevent gradle from downloading dependencies

We would like to have a script that does "svn update" and if the depedency.gradle file is in that list of updates, we would like to run a task that ONLY updates dependencies so the developers machine is up to date. What would that task be? I don't see it when running "gradle tasks". Looking for an updatejars or something.
When we build our project, we don't want it to check for jar updates at all!!!! most because that only needs to be done in 2 situations which are #1 above and when someone is updating the dependency.gradle file themselves. For the second thing, they can just run "gradle updatejars" once I know the answer to question #1 that is.
Any ideas? I am just getting into gradle and we really want to keep a consistent environment where when we run our update script, it gets the source code AND the jars in one atomic sweep and we are no longer bothered by checking the repositories every build.
It would be nice to know how to do it by changing the build.gradle file if possible. If not, is there a command line option? (The build.gradle obviously would give me a command line option which is why I prefer that method as I could say compile does not depend on downloading jars).
Regarding the second question. As far as I understand, Gradle will not attempt to do remote lookups or try to download the jar if it is already in the local cache. This should be true for jars declared with a static version, e.g. testCompile 'junit:junit:4.10'.
If you have dynamic versions, e.g. 1.+ or 1.0-SNAPSHOT, etc. then Gradle has to do a check every now and then. You can fine tune the cache expiry for such dependencies.
To make sure Gradle does not do remote lookups you can also use --offline option. See this doc for details.
With regard to svn update, you have at least 3 options:
Try to use an SvnKit plugin for Gradle
Use the ant svn task (here's how to do svn checkout)
Run external command from Gradle. Use the ExecPlugin or just implement it yourself using Groovy API.
