wxWidgets event focus textcontrol - events

I have another wxWidgets question regarding events and focus.
I have already looked at the tutorials and this old question here but I am still running into problems C++ Event (Focus) Handling
Basically I have a dialog with two wxTextCtrl elements and a Button.
What I would like to achieve is, that when I click on button it needs to tell me which of the two elements previously had the focus.
In the constructor of my Dialog I created all the elements and then connected them to the eventhandler like this: Ttop->Connect(TOP,wxEVT_KILL_FOCUS,(wxObjectEventFunction)&UI_ADDENTRY::hasfocus);
Tbottom->Connect(BOTTOM,wxEVT_KILL_FOCUS,(wxObjectEventFunction)&UI_ADDENTRY::hasfocus);
then there is the eventhandler that safes the id into focus
void UI_ADDENTRY::hasfocus(wxFocusEvent& event){
focus= event.GetId();
event.Skip();}
however when i try to access focus in the Button function it always tells me: 0 instead of TOP or BOTTOM / the ids that I gave the textcontrols
void UI_ADDENTRY::OnRecord(wxCommandEvent &event){
wxString tmp;
tmp << this->focus;
wxMessageBox(tmp);}
What am I doing wrong? is there another way of finding out which of the two textbox has been in focus last?
Thank you

The most fool proof way is to catch EVT_SET_FOCUS in your text controls and remember the last one that received it. This is not more difficult than what you are doing but should work without problems.
FWIW EVT_KILL_FOCUS can't, unfortunately, be consistently implemented on all platforms, in particular GTK+ doesn't give any information about the window focus is being lost to.

In think u mean event.GetWindow().GetId(). Though I'm not sure how ur casting from int to string.

GtkButton label updates

I am designing a GUI using C, Glade, and Gtk.
I have some signals configured in glade to update the labels of various widgets, mainly GtkButton and GtkLabel. The overall functionality is that when a certain radio button is clicked, all button and labels change in response (language selection).
I am using the function gtk_label_set_label(...) in the widgets _draw() function and it works as expected (text changes, g_print occurs (once)).
gboolean on_lblMyLabel_draw(GtkLabel *label, gpointer *user_data) {
gtk_label_set_label(label, "custom text");
g_print("%s\n", "custom text");
return FALSE;
}
However, when I attempt the same from a button,
gboolean on_btnMyButton_draw(GtkButton *button, gpointer *user_data) {
gtk_button_set_label(button, "custom text");
g_print("%s\n", "custom text");
return FALSE;
}
The text does not update, but dissappears, and the g_print() statement prints forever (as if the draw is recursively calling itself).
Funnily, if I move the button code from _draw to _click, it works as expected, however, I need the GUI to redraw itself, so updating on click is impractical.
Is there a way, using _draw() to prevent this?
Is there a better way to do this?
thx!
Is there a way, using _draw() to prevent this?
No, and you shouldn’t be using the draw signal for this either. It has an entirely different purpose, and will be called each time a widgets redraws itself. That’s also the reason why your button is going into an infinite recursion: you changed its label so it figures it needs to be redrawn; that redraw leads to your callback being called, which again changes the label, etc etc
Is there a better way to do this?
Yes, and you mention it yourself already: make sure you do the logic of changing the widgets in the appropriate place (for example, on a click event), and let the GTK widgets take care of redrawing themselves.
Unless you’re doing something very exotic (like not running an event loop, which you automatically get with GtkApplication), this will all work fine.

Intercepting and Disabling Global Mouse Events

I have a problem with my mouse. Every now and then it will double click when I only single click. I know this is a problem with the mouse, and I've contacted the manufacturer, still waiting for a reply. But in the meantime I was wondering if there was a way that I could find out when the left mouse button had been clicked twice within a very short period (probably 1-10 milliseconds) of time, and disable the second click.
I mostly know how to use hooks, so that's not the problem, my main question is how to stop an event from happening, if that's possible.
The information on how to prevent the mouse message from being processed is in the documentation of the "LowLevelMouseProc callback function" in MSDN:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms644986(v=vs.85).aspx
Specifically, it says: "If the hook procedure processed the message, it may return a nonzero value to prevent the system from passing the message to the rest of the hook chain or the target window procedure." So, if you know about windows hooks, you know how to do it.
EDIT: Actually, now that I think more about it, you don't want to discard any event. You simply want to transform the doubleclick event into just another left-button-down event. I believe you can do it from within the hook handler, and it will work. Have you tried it?
In C#'s WinForms, you write an event handler involving the mouse receiving a MouseEventArgs object. Inside it, you can access certain info such as the number of times it was clicked, for example.
protected void RowClicked(object sender, MouseEventArgs evt)
{
// Trigger it when the mouse was clicked only once
if( evt.Button.Clicks == 1 ) {
// ... more things ...
}
return;
}
Other GUI libraries have other possibilities. That said, your problem has nothing to do with GUI libraries. You have to change the sensitivity of your mouse, in the configuration options of your operating system. For example, in the Windows' control panel, you can change how much time has to pass between a click and another one to be considered a doble-click. In lUbuntu, you can do the very same, in System menu >> Preferences >> Keyboard and Mouse.

Release the focus from my window

I'm wondering how I can give the focus back to the window that it before my window got it. I've looked around and so far only seen functions to get, not release, focus.
I wonder if you just need the focus released, or do you need to focus on another entity instead, after releasing the focus from said entity?
If you need to know previous widget in your form tab order, take a look at QWidget::nextInFocusChain and QWidget::previousInFocusChain. You should be able to get next\previous widget in your widget's focus chain. Once you know it, you can pass focus to it.
If you're looking to get next\previous window in Z-order take a look at winapi GetNextWindow function (GW_HWNDPREV in wCmd parameter will return a handle to the window above the given window). Once you know the previous window you can bring it back to from using BringWindowToTop
hope this helps, regards

WP7 Toggle switch in a Pivot control?

Is there any way to control the threshold of the flick action to on/off a toggle switch so that it doesn't mess with the pivot control's navigation?
Sorry, but I'm going to avoid you're question (I can't answer it anyway) and suggest you use a different approach.
You could (I assume) use a checkbox to just as easily provide the option to the person using the application. Afterall a toggle switch has the same functionality as a checkbox (specify/choose between two states) it just implements the interaction differently.
The toggle switch has not been designed/built (AFAIK) to support being used on top of something which also supports the same gesture.
As a general rule of usability, having controls on top of each other (or even next to each other) which support the same gesture is likely to cause problems for the user. Even if the problems are through accidentaly triggering the wrong gesture or expectations about how their gesture will be interpretted.
In summary: this is a really tricky problem to solve; I don't think you can with the controls as they are; and the problem goes away entirely if you use a different control for toggling anyway.
I've had the same problem with my codermate, we've been digging this for many hours and we finally reached the top of the hill and we came up with a solution.
This solution works for the bing map control:
on mouse enter: myMapControl.CaptureMouse();
on mouse leave: myMapControl.ReleaseMouseCapture();
And there you go, when you'll navigate inside the map the pivot won't do transition ;)
If you don't get the point, just poke me and I'm going to explain with real code (I'm quite busy right now).
Cheers
This solution posted recently seems to be working out for people for dealing with gesture conflicts on pano / pivot. You might like to check it out.
Preventing the Pivot or Panorama controls from scrolling
Set the IsHitTestVisible = false in your root pivot control
The solution to this is simple, and comes from my experience with Android and iPhone application development.
simply make sure you only tap into the OnMouseLeave event - not the OnChecked or the OnMouseClick as these will accidentally fire just by touching the toggle.
You want make sure that they were touching it when they let go of the screen, and this (unless you put the toggle on the edge of the screen will almost never be the case

Janus GridEX Problem

It's a longshot that anyone can help with this, but here goes. I inherited a VB6 app with a Janus GridEX control. It iterates through records, and is editable. Problem is, if I edit a cell and hit the button to go to the next record, the change is applied to the next record, not the one I was editing. It's like, I need it to finish up the edit before going to the next record. I've had this sort of problem before in VC++, and sometimes you have to "KillFocus" on the control you're on or something. I just don't know what to do here. I tried sending a carriage return, since if you return out of the edit cell, it works, but sending a carriage return manually doesn't work. What's the secret?
Is your grid bound or unbound?
It's hard to tell from your description, but I imagine that if your are having this problem then it's probably bound.
As the other answer asked, is the button the RecordNavigator that is built into the control or is it a separate button? The reason I bring this up again, is that I have seen issues in the VB6 applications I support where a toolbar will often intercept and interfere with how the JanusGrid should work.
To get around this limitation, I have added the following code in the click handler of any toolbars where there is also a JanusGrid control on the form.
If jsgxYourGridName.EditMode = jgexEditModeOn Then jsgxYourGridName.Update
This way any changes are immediately applied to the current row.
If this does not help, then I have also seen problems where the recordset that is bound to the grid gets out of sync with the internal recordset in the grid. You can check this by comparing the bookmark of the grid to the bookmark of the recordset.
Ie. mrsYourRecordset.Bookmark = jsgxYourGrid.ADORecordset.Bookmark
At one point I may have also used something like this.
jsgxYourGrid.ADORecordset.Bookmark = jsgxYourGrid.RowBookmark(jsgxYourGrid.RowIndex(jsgxYourGrid.Row))
Finally you can try setting a breakpoint in the BeforeUpdate, RowColChange and/or AfterColUpdate events of the grid, to see what record the grid is really on when clicking on the button.
It depends whether the button is internal to Janus GridEX or not. If it internal then just about the only thing you can do is look at the events the control exposes to see if there a sequence that can let you know that this problem occurs. Then you can try to take corrective action by restoring the row you moved to and put the edit in the row you left.
If the button is external to Janus then you can use the debug mode to trace sequence of statement that control the transfer of focus to the next row. It could be something out of order or a side effect of the particular sequence of commands. I have run into both with different controls.
Remember that you can edit while in debug mode so you can try different approaches and test until you find one that works.
