Retrieve datename from SQL on DELPHI - delphi-xe2

Im using Delphi XE2 and SQL Server 2005 Express.
I have a table named maintenance with the columns:
id Integer;
Activity Varchar(x); = actividad
Description Memo; = descripcion
Day Integer;= dia_sem
User Integer; = usuario
id, activity, description, day, user
I use this table to register the activities of maintenance that have to be donne in each day, as in Monday they have to clean behind x or y etc, on tuesdays they have to do something else etc.
I save the day from 1 to 7 being Sunday=1 to Saturday=7, so the program will retrieve all the activities where queryday.text= DayOfWeek(Now) and warn the users that there are activities to be donne.
My problem is that i want to show in a DBGrid the day with the full name and not as a number.
Sunday
Monday
Tuesday etc.
On SQL i get the full day name using:
Select id AS ID, actividad AS Actividad, descripcion AS Descripcion,(datename(weekday, dia_sem-2)) AS Dia, usuario AS Usuario
from mantenimiento
i set dia_sem-2 so it would match the day i want (Apparently Tuesday=1)
My problem is that when i add this query to a Tquery on delphi and i add the fields, the "day" field is not added, it doesnt exist. What am I doing wrong or how can i achieve what im trying to do?.

Did you say tQuery?
If I remember correctly, tQuery is a BDE component.
The BDE is obsolete technology and using a more modern method of connecting to your database would be recommended.
That being said, the BDE doesn't know how to deal with Unicode string datatype. (I'm not sure Unicode even existed when the BDE was first made.)
The type returned from the SQL Server function DateName is nvarchar.
The 'n' means that it's a Unicode string.
As a workaround you can cast the result to an Ascii string. Try something like this:
cast ( datename(...) as varchar(20))

Oracle TRUNC function doesn't work in perl

I try to insert the created field in my_table. The created field has a datetime type. In my_table the field my_created has a date format. So I try to TRUNC the created field. However I'm getting the error ORA-01830: date format picture ends before converting entire input stringwhile inserting the truncated value. It seems, that the time is still there but is reset to 00:00. how can I get only the date without time? It happens only in perl. I'm getting only date in toad.
Very simplified code looks like:
my $SQL="SELECT
TRUNC(CREATED),
FROM
DBA_OBJECTS";
my $sth = $db->prepare($SQL);
$sth->execute();
my $date = $sth->fetchrow();
$SQL = "INSERT INTO MY_TABLE
(MY_CREATED)
VALUES (?)";
my $stmt = $dbh_master->prepare($SQL);
$stmt->execute($date);
EDIT:
I found an ugly workaround and I'm executing it like this:
$stmt->execute(substr($date, 0, 10));
However maybe someone has a nicer solution.
How can I get only the date without time?
In Oracle, a DATE is a binary data type that is composed of 7 bytes representing: century, year-of-century, month, day, hour, minute and second. It ALWAYS has those binary components so if you want an Oracle DATE data type then you cannot get it without a time.
The Oracle DATE data type was released with Oracle version 2 in 1979 and predates the ANSI/ISO standard (of 1986, where a DATE does not have a time component) and Oracle has maintained backwards compatibility with their previous data types rather than adopting the ANSI standard.
If you use the TRUNC(date_value, format_model) function then it will set the binary components of the DATE, up to the specified format model, to the minimum (0 for hours, minutes and seconds, 1 for days and months) but it will NOT give you a data type that does not have a time component.
It happens only in perl. I'm getting only date in toad.
No, you are getting the entire 7 byte binary value in Toad; however, the user interface is only choosing to show you the date component. There should be a setting in the preferences that can set the date format in Toad which will let you see the entire date-time components.
Oracle SQL/Plus and SQL Developer use the NLS_DATE_FORMAT session parameter and Toad may also be able to use that.
If you want to get the value as a DATE then it will always have a time component (even if you set that time component to zeros using TRUNC).
If you want to get the date so that it is formatted in a way without a time component then you need to convert it to another data type and can use TO_CHAR to format it as a string:
SELECT TO_CHAR(CREATED, 'YYYY-MM-DD')
FROM DBA_OBJECTS
But then you will be returning a (formatted) string and not a DATE data type.

Creating Easy Way to update variables in large code

I am using Oracle SQL Developer and have a rather large query built. The query is going to be run on a monthly or quarterly basis. I was wondering if there was a way that I can do a declare statment up top and then in the code just reference these variables created. That way when someone wants to run the query they can just change the dates at the top of the code rather then have to dig through all of it. I am kind of new to Oracle SQL Developer but I know in other sql codes I built I could simply declare the variable and then set it and then in the code call the variable name. Below is an example of what I know how to do but i am having trouble in Oracle SQL Developer.
Example: I have a data base that contains the columns Business, business type(small,medium,large) number of deposits, deposit amount and deposit date. I want to build a query that outputs a quarterly summary of the number of deposits and the deposit amount and be able to change the quarter and size of the business.
Example Code from my previous SQL expereince this is an example of what I am trying to do since i can not disclose my code with the table names etc in them.
Declare #busstype,#qbegindate,#qenddate
Set #busstype = 'small'
Set #qbegindate = '01-JAN-2013'
Set #qenddate = '01-MAR-2013'
Select business,numberofdeposits,depositamount
From business_transactions
Where ('#qbegindate'<=depositdate<='#qenddate'
And businesstype = '#busstype')
Group By Business
The results would list out the businesses name and then the total deposits and total amount.
I know this code is not right but its just an example of what I am looking to do in Oracle SQL Developer. The query I have built is working fine I just find it a pain to dig through the code to change dates and criteria and was wondering how I would do something like this since i have figured out that I am not able to do this in ORACLE Sql Developer.
Here is an example with predefined variable:
set feedback off
var abc varchar2
begin
:abc := 'abc';
end;
/
select :abc as a from dual;
Output:
A
--------------------------------
abc
Common table expressions allow variables to be defined at the top of the query. For performance and style reasons this is generally not a good way to
use common table expressions. The advantage is this query can be run in any IDE and it is completely self-contained.
--Variables - change these before running.
with busstype as (select 'small' value from dual),
qbegindate as (select date '2013-01-01' value from dual),
qenddate as (select date '2013-03-01' value from dual)
--Query - do not modify code below.
select business,numberofdeposits,depositamount
from business_transactions
where depostiddate between
(select value from qbegindate)
and
(select value from qenddate)
and businesstype = (select value from busstype)
group by business, numberofdeposits,depositamount;

Crystal Reports Issue turning a string into a number

I'm having one of those throw the computer out the window days.
I am working on a problem involving Crystal Reports (Version 10) and an Oracle Database (11g).
I am taking a view from the database that returns a string (varcahr2(50)) which is actually a number, when a basic SELECT * query is run on this view I get the number back in the format 000000000000100.00.
When this view is then used in Crystal Reports I can view the field data, but I can't sum the data as it is not a number.
I began, by attempting to using ToNumber on the field, to which Crystal's response was that the string was not numeric text. Ok fair enough, I went back to the view and ran TO_NUMBER, when this was then used in crystal it did not return any results. I also attempted to run TO_CHAR on the view so that I could hopefully import the field as text and then perform a ToNumber, yet the same as with the TO_NUMBER no records were displayed.
I've started new reports, I've started new views. No avail.
This seems to have something to do with how I am retrieving the data for the view.
In simplistic terms I'm pulling data from a table looking at two fields a Foreign Key and a Value field.
SELECT PRIMARY_KEY,
NVL(MAX(DECODE(FOREIGN_KEY, FOREIGN_KEY_OF_VALUE_I_NEED, VALUE_FIELD)), 0)
FROM MY_TABLE
GROUP BY PRIMARY_KEY
When I attempted to put modify the result using TO_NUMBER or TO_CHAR I have used it around the VALUE_FIELD itself and the entire expression, wither way works when the run in a SQL statement. However any TO_NUMBER or TO_CHAR modification to the statement returns no results in Crystal Reports when the view is used.
This whole problem smacks of something that is a tick box or equivalent that I have overlooked.
Any suggestions of how to solve this issue or where I could go to look for an answer would be greatly appreciated.
I ran this query in SQL Developer:
SELECT xxx, to_number(xxx) yyy
FROM (
SELECT '000000000000100.00' XXX FROM DUAL
)
Which resulted in:
XXX YYY
000000000000100.00 100
If your field is truly numeric, you could create a SQL Expression field to do the conversion:
-- {%NUMBER_FIELD}
TO_NUMBER(TABLE.VALUE_FIELD)
This turned out to be an issue with how Crystal Reports deals with queries from a database. All I needed to do was contain my SQL statement within another Select Statement and on this instance of the column apply the TO_NUMBER so that Crystal Reports would recognize the column values as numbers.
Hopefully this helps someone out, as this was a terrible waste of an afternoon.

Is it possible to configure Oracle session/connection to automatically uppercase strings?

Does anyone know if it's possible to configure an Oracle session or connection so that every string that gets persisted is automatically uppercased?
For example, if I invoke a SQL like this: "INSERT INTO STUDENT (name) VALUES ('john doe')"
The information in my table would be persisted like this:
STUDENT
--------------------
ID | 1
NAME | JOHN DOE
I've checked this entry but couldn't find anything like this: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/ch3globenv.htm#sthref186
Thanks!
There is no session-level configuration parameter for that, no.
You could write a trigger on the STUDENT table that would automatically store the data in uppercase but you'd need to do that for every table.
CREATE TRIGGER trg_student
BEFORE INSERT ON student
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
:new.name := upper( :new.name );
END;
Depending on the problem you are trying to solve, you could potentially set your session's NLS settings to ignore case sensitivity so that the string 'John Doeis considered to be equal to the stringJOHN DOE`. The options, limitations, and downsides to this will vary with the specific version of Oracle.

Insert a datetime value with GetDate() function to a SQL server (2005) table?

I am working (or fixing bugs) on an application which was developed in VS 2005 C#. The application saves data to a SQL server 2005. One of insert SQL statement tries to insert a time-stamp value to a field with GetDate() TSQL function as date time value.
Insert into table1 (field1, ... fieldDt) values ('value1', ... GetDate());
The reason to use GetDate() function is that the SQL server may be at a remove site, and the date time may be in a difference time zone. Therefore, GetDate() will always get a date from the server. As the function can be verified in SQL Management Studio, this is what I get:
SELECT GetDate(), LEN(GetDate());
-- 2010-06-10 14:04:48.293 19
One thing I realize is that the length is not up to the milliseconds, i.e., 19 is actually for '2010-06-10 14:04:48'. Anyway, the issue I have right now is that after the insert, the fieldDt actually has a date time value up to minutes, for example, '2010-06-10 14:04:00'. I am not sure why. I don't have permission to update or change the table with a trigger to update the field.
My question is that how I can use a INSERT T-SQL to add a new row with a date time value ( SQL server's local date time) with a precision up to milliseconds?
Check your table. My guess is that the FieldDT column has a data type of SmallDateTime which stores date and time, but with a precision to the nearest minute. If my guess is correct, you will not be able to store seconds or milliseconds unless you change the data type of the column.
I would guess that you are not storing the GetDate() value in a DateTime field. If you store the value in a datetime field you will get the maximum precision allowed by the DateTime type. Additionally, DateTime is a binary type (a double actually) so 19 means 19 bytes, not 19 characters.
Try to create a simple table with a Datetime field like this
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[DateTable](
[DateField] [datetime] NOT NULL
)
And add a date with
insert into datetable (datefield) values(getdate())
When you execute a select you will get back a value including milliseconds. The following query
select * from datetable
returns
2010-06-11 00:38:46.660
Maybe this would work instead of getdate -
SYSDATETIME()
look here if you can find what you need -
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188383.aspx
As you're on SQL 2005, don't forget the getutcdate() function to ensure that, regardless of where your servers are actually located, you have a constant time reference.
Imagine, you have the server in the UK in winter (i.e. GMT+0), and save a record at 10:30am. You then cut over to a SQL server hosted in California (GMT+8) and 8 hours later save another record.
Using getdate(), both saves record the same time "10:30:00". Using getutcdate(), the first save records at "10:30:00", the second save records "18:30:00".
Not really answering the question, but important in your circumstances.
You can use like this in procedure and If there is no procedure use only getdate().
insert into [dbo].[Tbl_User] (UserId,Uvendoremail,UAddress,Ddob,DMobile,
DEmail,DPassword,DAddress,CreatedDate) values (#userid,#vendoremail#address,#dob,#mobile,#email,#dpassword,#daddress,getdate())
