Recently I downloaded the Xcode update, and tried my app on the iOS 7 simulator, and had to change a few things as expected. I noticed that the update uninstalled the iOS 6 simulator, so I downloaded it again and the 6.1 sim runs fine it seems, until I pressed run in Xcode. It gave me an alert box simply saying "iOS simulator failed to instal the application" with an OK button. the iOS sim was on the home screen with the old version of my app before i started working on it today. Has anybody else had this problem? It didn't give me any other details. Also my deployment target os is 6.1 and pressing build results in a success.
Found another post that says you have to change the "Opens in" bit to Xcode 4.6 in nibs and storyboards. fixed my problem.

When I debug and deploy Xamarin.iOS native app to iOS simulator 8.1 through XS(in Mac), it installs app to simulator but it closes automatically after installation. Though app deployment on iOS simulator 10 works fine. This problem is occurred after updating XS to latest version and iOS SDK update to latest version. My iOS app deployment target is 8.0. Also I made sure that Entitlements.plist is empty.
NOTE: Xcode 8 does successful installation on iOS simulator 8.1 and works fine.
Anyone knows why this problem occurs and how to resolve it ?
Clean the project, recompile it and run on simulator.
Additionally, open simulator logs using Cmd + / hotkey and see what exactly is being printed to the simulator logs when you launch your app.
I've seen similar problems which were related to the app crash on launch actually.
After upgrading to the latest release version of Xcode (7.0), I was made aware that further work by me was needed on an older project that is still being developed in Xcode 6.x/Swift 1.2. I downloaded Xcode 6.4 as a dmg from Apple's developer site (the Mac AppStore only installs Xcode 7.0 now), and installed it side-by-side by choosing "keep both" and changing the name from "Xcode 2" to "Xcode 6".
The first time I opened my project and tried to run it on the simulator, I got an alert saying that "Could not connect to simulator" or something similar (didn't write down the exact wording). I had to force-quit both Xcode and the simulator, then relaunched.
This time, I can not select any simulator from the pull down menu beside the schemes. I checked "Window / Devices" and it turns out there is no simulator installed.
If I click on "Add" (+), specify the properties of the simulator and then click "Create", then Xcode hangs and I have to force-quit it again.
Anyone experiencing something similar?
Forget about it, after restarting my mac, it solved itself: all the simulators are there in the pull-down menu.
Always quick-to-post me...
I need to test an application on an iOS6 simulator. Since this iOS version is not part of the current Xcode6 environment, I tried to install Xcode 5.1.1 beside my Xcode 6 installation and use it.
I downloaded Xcode 5.1.1 from the Apple developer pages and installed in in my applications folder. After launch I am downloading and installing the iOS 6.1 SDK from within Xcode.
After that I am trying to launch the simulator (NOT with an app, just a clean launch) but when the simulator window is shown it keeps black. The log says:
Could not lookup service com.apple.iphonesimulator.host_support: 1102
repeatingly. Clicking "Reset Content and Settings..." wont work. I also deleted the SDK file from
~/Applications/Xcode 2.app/Contents/Developer/Applications/
and the 6.1 Folder from
~/Users/username/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/
And made a fresh install. Also no effect. I know there are a lot of similar questions here on stack, but they all suggest the "Reset Content and Settings..." which wont work for me. Any idea what might going on?
When launching an iOS7.1 simulator from Xcode 5.1.1 it starts up and works like a charm. The iOS7.1 comes with the Xcode bundle, the iOS6.1 simulator has to be installed manually. Maybe that's the problem?
Thanks!
Ok,
i probably found the answer here: In OS X 10.10 (Yosemite Beta), How do I Test Using iOS 6.1 Simulator?
In short: iOS6 is not supported under OS-X 10.10 and so the simulator won't work.
I had XCode 5 installed on my old Mac, with iOS6 & 7 simulators. On migrating to a new Mac (both running Mavericks) I now have XCode and XCode 5 installed, the former being XCode 6.x. I think XCode demanded to be upgraded because I wasn't using iOS8 previously, and on my old Mac XCode won't start without me letting it download updates.
Now, my XCode apps don't have simulators and when I installed them, things just don't work. XCode 5 launches simulators with a black screen even after resetting the simulator and force quitting, for example.
Is there a way to fix this or has everything just gone wrong and I should delete all the xcode apps and re-download/install?
I was previously targeting iOS 6/7 and while I'm happy to drop iOS6 support now, I'm unclear which XCode I should use.
Open the App Store and check if your Xcode 6 is up to date.
I would recommend dragging each Xcode.app file to the trash and downloading a fresh install of Xcode 6 from the App Store.
I have the Xcode Version 6.0.1 (6A317) on Mac OS X 10.9.5 with all iOS 8 simulators. I have also downloaded the iOS 7.1 simulators.
I am developing an app for iOS 8 and iOS 7.
The problem I encounter is that Xcode 6 doesn't show the iOS 7.1 simulators in the devices menu. At some point it did show them but on my newly created Xcode 6 project it does not.
I was looking at some stackoverflow solutions.I have addded the iOS 7.1 simulators Window - Devices - SIMULATORS. They are also checked with "Show in the Run Destionations Menu",however they are not shown.
I found a workaround by setting the Project and Target Deployment Target to 7.1. However, this is a stupid solution since for every test I need to manually switch them forth and back 7.1-8.0
This is my first ipad app and it worked perfectly under Xcode 5.1.1. iOS 7 and iOS 8 (CREATED UNDER Xcode 5.1.1.). Now I have created a project in Xcode 6.0.1. and the project doesn't have the simulators showing correctly and 95% of the app doesn't work.
I am new to iOS development but I suppose that this is a bug, but I am unsure. Please help.
The deployment target is the minimum OS version you intend to support.
As you stated, you need to set the deployment target to 7.1 in order to see the 7.1 simulators. If your deployment target is 8.0, the 7.1 simulators will not be available in the run destinations menu. This is the correct behavior because you can't run on iOS 7.1 if your deployment target is 8.0.
I already had deployment target 7.0 and simulator still wasn't available for 7.1.
I fixed the issue though by going into Xcode preferences, selected Downloads and re-downled the missing 7.1 simulators under 'Components'. Although I previously had 7.1 simulator, the Xcode 6 upgrade had seemed to remove them.
