I noticed magento has "magento connect manager" which lists all installed extensions and allows the user to check for updates. My guess is the script connects to magento connect and compares the version of every extension the user owns.
That's fine, except that paid extensions are usually sold/stored somewhere else and magento connect has only common information about this extension.
Is there any way to let the customers who bought my extension know there's an update available?
Do I have to write some kind of observer to connect to external servers and get current version number? Is it possible to get it from magento connect for paid extensions (XML or JSON would be perfect)?
What should I do about it? How can this be achieved? What do other companies/developers do to let their customers know there's a new version of their module?
Thank you
You're almost spot on. Here's a good guide on how this is done:

Basically, you build it around your own RSS feed that supplies the updates. Good luck!

we have a problem with our magento shop before going live. We do not exaclty know when did this one happen. We want to offer digital goods (pictures) as download links from external host.
Everything worked fine - we did not test the checkout for a month.
Now we have a problem, if customer buys a digital good, his download link for his picture does not work. It is empty. The hashkey in the DB seems ok. In Backend the purchase is being triggered. We suppose the connection between the hashkey and the external url is wrong.
We did 2 things since that but already applied a rollback. We installed SSL sertificate and a delete old orders extension. Can one of these things cause our problem?
Thank you a lot for any hint.

I want to implement leave management system in joomla. For every leave i want email notification to be sent to employee's manager (reporting manager). I need to do employee - > reporting manager mapping somewhere in database.
Is there any built in utility in joomla user groups which can help me? OR Do I need to simply create mapping table in database?
Please suggest.
We are looking for something very similar to run within a Joomla Intranet environment.
I have recently found an extension that might be the kind of thing you are looking for - have a look at Intranet Attendance Track by thagatpam in the extensions directory.
The extension can track attendance, leave, and has a manager approval system built-in.
Hope this helps.
I have a huge problem with my VirtueMart. I try to develop a new payment module for it. The main problem is that no matter how I do it VirtueMart seems to refuse to let me store the plug-in in the database and also it refuses to let me choose it as a payment method.
I have disabled all other "countries" except the one that the module is written for. I have followed all guides on joomla mastery. I am convinced that my constructor is correct according to the scarce documentation I have found. I have even copy/pasted an existing payment module and changed all names for the database to something different so I can see if it's created and it's a no-go.
I am starting to get desperate. Does anyone have a good virtuemart developer guide? Do I need to turn some flags on (the flag to update/write to database is on in joomla and virtuemart) or off? How can I programatically FORCE VirtueMart to actually listen to what it say should work in all documentations I've found?
A client wants a Magento site done, and I have never used it before. I thought, "Sure, I'll create a standard site using Bootstrap and just query the database for the products". Now that I've been looking into it, it looks like the only way to use Magento is by creating a Theme which doesn't look to be Bootstrap friendly.
Please someone tell me that creating Themes isn't the only legitimate way of creating a Magento site.
Some starting points:

http://magenthon.com (info and code) or demo here
https://github.com/cvaldemar/magento-bootstrap (doesn't seem too active though ?)
If this is something you are planning on doing yourself, the second link looks like a promising candidate to download, reverse engineer then cusomise!
Good luck

Newest, Magento 1.8 supported
Yes, Try this Magento Bootstrap framework but it's unstable version.
We want to build a bridge to synchronize data both ways in magento 1.6 and zoho crm -to synchronize leads, quotes, invoices, clients (assign them a user id and password for our B2B website) -to synchronize products attributes, etc...
Examples :
Each time a client fills up a form to be registered on my website it has to create a lead on magento like the first time login form ( i already made one web to lead form, but doesn't fit well with magento design and doesn't create the account in magento...)
Each time a client asks for a quote (through a form "Request a quote") on magento, it creates an opportunity, or a quote (or a lead ?).
I would like something really simple that adapts to magento structure that's all, in fact, it's a question of pushing/pulling DB records in both softwares (magento and zoho).
So I've been looking all around the web, but if you google "Zoho Magento integration" it will only return people ready to pay for that. Since I know magento a bit, I'm willing to do it by myself.
Thanks for Your help !
You will have to create a magento connector module to handle synchronization between Magento and ZOHO CRM API ( http://zohocrmapi.wiki.zoho.com/ ).
It is not easy. But if you have some experience with Magento development and do not know how to start with it, i would suggest you to download some similiar module (e. g. http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/integrations/crm/erply-connector.html) and see how it is built. Then try to develop your own.
