Joomla INI translation - joomla

I need to translate in my ini file a word that has a "()" or an "/" sign but it seems to brake when I do it.
eg.
sometext(text)="otherLanguagetext(text)" <-- this causes an error in the ini file an brakes all translations.
sometext/text = "someOthertext/text" <-- Broken also
having spaces work correctly:
Some text="Some text1" <--Works
The fact is that the original language is database generated and doesn't have any translation tag or something like joomla translation tag.
I just type the word I want to translate in this way.
I searched for an ini editor that might fix this out automatically (e.g place '/' or something ) but I had no luck on this.

Your example key's are invalid. INI files by definition can not have any of these characters: ?{}|&~![()^" in the keys.
Note: There are reserved words which must not be used as keys for ini
files. These include: null, yes, no, true, false, on, off, none.
Values null, off, no and false result in "". Values on, yes and true
result in "1". Characters ?{}|&~![()^" must not be used anywhere in
the key and have a special meaning in the value.
— http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.parse-ini-string.php
Joomla language files also have their own specification, which if not followed will cause an error when Joomla loads and parses the language file.
In INI files and Joomla language files the value also has special interpretations for specific characters and requires escaping for the use of some characters like double quotes etc.
Finally, Joomla has language overrides that allow the end user to override any string set by the core software or third party extensions which also affect the way keys are translated.

Try to use backslash before those symbols like this:
"otherLanguagetext\(text\)"
"someOthertext\/text"
P.S. you cannot use ANY special symbols in your constants! Try to name them something like this:
OTHER_LANGUAGE_TEXT
SOME_OTHER_TEXT

Try this,
SOME_TEXT = "otherLanguagetext(text)"
SOME_OTHER_TEXT = "someOthertext/text"
Hope it works

Setting special characters in QSettings

I'm trying to edit a desktop.ini file using QSettings. I need to set a value on a section that contains { and } which I believe are special characters.
I am currently setting these value using the following code:
desk_ini.beginGroup("{F29F85E0-4FF9-1068-AB91-08002B27B3D9}");
desk_ini.setValue("Prop5", "TestTag");
desk_ini.endGroup();
Unexpectedly after executing the program, this is what is looks like in the INI file.
[%7BF29F85E0-4FF9-1068-AB91-08002B27B3D9%7D]
Prop5=TestTag1
After some reading, I found these: (Quoting from the QSettings Documentation)
The INI file format has severe restrictions on the syntax of a key. Qt works around this by using % as an escape character in keys.
It seems like QSettings is using % to escape {}
Now, I really need it to be "as is" for the desktop.ini to be read property.
To reiterate, my question: Is there a way to set special characters in QSettings without changing them?

Processing form input in a Joomla component

I am creating a Joomla component and one of the pages contains a form with a text input for an email address.
When a < character is typed in the input field, that character and everything after is not showing up in the input.
I tried $_POST['field'] and JFactory::getApplication()->input->getCmd('field')
I also tried alternatives for getCmd like getVar, getString, etc. but no success.
E.g. John Doe <j.doe#mail.com> returns only John Doe.
When the < is left out, like John Doe j.doe#mail.com> the value is coming in correctly.
What can I do to also have the < character in the posted variable?
BTW. I had to use & lt; in this question to display it as I want it. This form suffers from the same problem!!
You actually need to set the filtering that you want when you grab the input. Otherwise, you will get some heavy filtering. (Typically, I will also lose # symbols.)
Replace this line:
JFactory::getApplication()->input->getCmd('field');
with this line:
JFactory::getApplication()->input->getRaw('field');
The name after the get part of the function is the filtering that you will use. Cmd strips everything but alphanumeric characters and ., -, and _. String will run through the html clean tags feature of joomla and depending on your settings will clean out <>. (That usually doesn't happen for me, but my settings are generally pretty open to the point of no filtering on super admins and such.
getRaw should definitely work, but note that there is no filtering at all, which can open security holes in your application.
The default text filter trims html from the input for your field. You should set the property
filter="raw"
in your form's manifest (xml) file, and then use getRaw() to retrieve the value. getCmd removes the non-alphanumeric characters.

How do you check for a changing value within a string

I am doing some localization testing and I have to test for strings in both English and Japaneses. The English string might be 'Waiting time is {0} minutes.' while the Japanese string might be '待ち時間は{0}分です。' where {0} is a number that can change over the course of a test. Both of these strings are coming from there respective property files. How would I be able to check for the presence of the string as well as the number that can change depending on the test that's running.
I should have added the fact that I'm checking these strings on a web page which will display in the relevant language depending on the location of where they are been viewed. And I'm using watir to verify the text.
You can read elsewhere about various theories of the best way to do testing for proper language conversion.
One typical approach is to replace all hard-coded text matches in your code with constants, and then have a file that sets the constants which can be updated based on the language in use. (I've seen that done by wrapping the require of that file in a case statement based on the language being tested. Another approach is an array or hash for each value, enumerated by a variable with a name like 'language', which lets the tests change the language on the fly. So validations would look something like this
b.div(:id => "wait-time-message).text.should == WAIT_TIME_MESSAGE[language]
To match text where part is expected to change but fall within a predictable pattern, use a regular expression. I'd recommend a little reading about regular expressions in ruby, especially using unicode regular expressions in ruby, as well as some experimenting with a tool like Rubular to test regexes
In the case above a regex such as:
/Waiting time is \d+ minutes./ or /待ち時間は\d+分です。/
would match the messages above and expect one or more digits in the middle (note that it would fail if no digits appear, if you want zero or more digits, then you would need a * in place of the +
Don't check for the literal string. Check for some kind of intermediate form that can be used to render the final string.
Sometimes this is done by specifying a message and any placeholder data, like:
[ :waiting_time_in_minutes, 10 ]
Where that would render out as the appropriate localized text.
An alternative is to treat one of the languages as a template, something that's more limited in flexibility but works most of the time. In that case you could use the English version as the string that's returned and use a helper to render it to the final page.

Freemarker Interpolation stripping whitespace?

I seem to be having issues with leading/trailing spaces in textareas!
If the last user has typed values into a textarea with leading/trailing spaces across multiple lines, they all disappear with exception to one space in the beginning & end.
Example:
If the textbox had the following lines: (quotes present only to help illustrate spaces)
" 3.0"
" 2.2 "
"0.3 "
it would be saved in the backend as
"<textarea id=... > 3.0/n 2.2 /n0.3 </textarea>"
My template (for this part) is fairly straightforward (entire template, not as easy...): ${label} ${textField}
When I load up the values again, I notice getTextField() is properly getting the desired string, quoted earlier... But when I look at the html page it's showing
" 3.0"
"2.2"
"0.3 "
And of course when "View Sourcing" it doesn't have the string seen in getTextField()
What I've tried:
Ensure the backend has setWhitespaceStripping(false); set
Adding the <#ftl strip_whitespace=false>
Adding the <#nl> on the same line as ${textField}
No matter what I've tried, I'm not having luck keeping the spaces after the interpolation.
Any help would be very appreciated!
Maybe you are inside a <#compress>...</#compress> (or <#compress>...</#compress>) block. Those filter the whole output on runtime and reduce whitespace regardless where it comes from. I recommend not using this directive. It makes the output somewhat smaller, but it has runtime overhead, and can corrupt output in cases like this.
FreeMarker interpolations don't remove whitespace from the inserted value, or change the value in any way. Except, if you are lexically inside an <#escape ...>....</#escape>, block, that will be automatically applied. But it's unlikely that you have an escaping expression that corrupts whitespace. But to be sure., you can check if there's any <#escape ...> in the same template file (no need to check elsewhere, as it's not a runtime directive).
strip_whitespace and #nt are only removing white-space during parsing (that's before execution), so they are unrelated.
You can also check if the whitespace is still there in the inserted value before inserting like this:
${textField?replace(" ", "[S]")?replace("\n", "[N]")?replace("\t", "[T]")}
If you find that they were already removed that probably means that they were already removed before the value was put into the data-model. So then if wasn't FreeMarker.

ADO and Microsoft Text Driver - Field Delimiter Problem

I'm using VB6 and ADO together with the Microsoft Text Driver to import data from an ASCII file. The file is comma delimited but it also contains double quotation marks around text data fields. The fields are also fixed width.
I'm having a problem that the driver reads the columns incorrectly any time one of the rows contains a quotation mark double quotation inside the content. This happens inside the "part description" column which is the second column from the left. When this occurs, columns to the right are all Null value, which is not the case in the text file.
I think it would be better to use only the commas as delimiters. However, I believe that commas also occur in the "part description" column so this means I should really load the file as fixed width. I'm not aware that there is any way of doing this unless I can specify this in the schema.ini file.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
Edit:
You are allowed to specify fixed width in your Schema.ini file. However, it appears to me that the commas and quotation marks that also exist as delimiters/qualifiers will prevent this from working properly. It looks like I may have to "manually" read the file in and write it back out in my own format before I load it using the MS Text driver. Still looking for other opinions.
I would try changing the Format value in the registry for the Jet text engine (if that's what you're using) at the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\Text. I think the default is CSVDelimited but you would change this to FixedLength. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms974559.aspx
It's probably worth adding that although you have a Schema.ini file for settings, on some options the registry overrules them anyway
Actually, looking at the link I supplied, it seems you have to use a schema.ini file for fixed-length files. Have you tried something like the following, which specifies the width?
[Test.txt]
Format=FixedLength
Col1=FirstName Text Width 7
Col2=LastName Text Width 10
Col3=ID Text Integer 3
I'm extra precautious with regional settings -- some users change default list separator. Usualy fix this with schema.ini like this:
[MyFile.csv]
Format=Delimited(,)
