I want to register an event listener, that must be called on creation fo new process instance in Activiti. Is there an Activiti event type for this?
I'm not certain I follow you, but perhaps you want to register an executionListener and associate it with the Start event of the process.
Execution listeners can be associated with the process instance, tasks, gateways and BPMN event symbols.

Looking for some help on an application design. I am using spring framework and hosting application in AWS.
I am working on an enterprise Java Web application that is suppose to handle events when their trigger time is reached. For example, consumers can set an event to begin on 12/20/22 at 07:35 AM, and system is suppose to send a notification when that time is reached.
I can store these events in a database along with their trigger time and setup a Spring scheduler (#Scheduler) to run every minute and process events whose trigger time is reached. My only concern with this approach is, there could be hundreds/thousands of event to trigger at any minute, and it cannot be processed within one minute.
Is there any alternate way to design this? I don't know if Spring offers a feature where I could create these Event, and Frameworks trigger these events when trigger time is reached. In that way, I can stay away from managing Scheduling and Triggering part.
I am using AWS to host this applications, so another option I'm thinking towards is creating an AWS lambda for every such Event, and let AWS manage the triggering part. In that way, I can stay away from managing the triggers.
Let me know your views? Or If you came across similar problems and how you resolved that?
You can consider using spring-cloud-dataflow to manage this as tasks and streams.
You create a custom batch application that will use #Scheduled to check the your database when events are dure and then send events to a stream. You can use Spring Integration APIs to interact with RabbitMQ or Kafka topics.
The event should contain enough information needed to process the event.
You then have a stream application that produces the content and send via email or pass it on to a separate stream app that sends the email.

You will configure property for mail_events to match the topic created and configured for you mail-event-batch application.

I am doing some POC's in tibco general palletes and came across onEventTimeout.By reading the docs it says
The On Event Timeout process starter specifies a process to execute when a Wait For ... activity discards an incoming event due to a timeout. A Wait For ... activity’s event timeout is specified by the Event Timeout field on the Event tab of the activity.
So I created one process definition having start,wait and end activity.Then created another process definition and added oneventtimeout starter process from the general activities.Now when I click on event source browse button(binocular icon) then it does not show me the above process definiton(having wait activity).So I guess I may be missing something.
Can any body please tell me how to use it ?
The onEventTimeout process starter will not work with a Wait activity. Try using a "Wait for" type of activity instead, for instance Wait for JMS Queue Message.
I've been doing some research into BPM solutions and am looking to hopefully use jBPM to achieve my goal. I am aware it is possible to start a process instance with an event signal sent to the process engine, but I would like to be able to interact with process instances currently running in that engine WITHOUT knowing their instance ID.
I am aiming to achieve this in an interrupt fashion by sending an event to the process engine, with business data, that will match to the process instance containing that specific match in business data (for instance a customer number unique to a process instance).
I have not yet been able to figure out how to do this, another of my goals is to expose this via REST/SOAP, and I am aware that this functionality is NOT currently implemented in the jBPM5 console REST interface.
How would I go about doing this, what are the standard patterns for doing so, or what other process engines should I be looking at to achieve this?
Yeah, you can achieve that with jbpm and I would recommend you to check jbpm6 CR2..
In order to do what you need you can start multiple processes inside a KieSession and then send your customer as the payload of your event. Only the process that has that customer will catch the event ( if it's modeled correctly with the catch event node that filter by customer).
The Rest endpoints are already there in jbpm6.

I've been studying a lot of the common ways that developers design/architect an application on domain driven design (Still trying to understand the concept as a whole). Some of the examples that I saw included the use of events via an event aggregator. I liked the concept because it truly keeps the different elements/domains of an application decoupled.
A concern that I have is: how do you rollback an operation in the case of an error?
For example:
Say I have an order application that has to save an order to the database and also save a copy of the order as a pdf to a CMS. The application fires an event that a new order has been created and the pdf service that subscribes to this event saves the pdf. Meanwhile when committing the order changes to the database an exception is thrown. The problem is that the pdf has been saved but their isn't a matching database record.
Should I cache the previously handled events and fire a new error event that looks to the cache for "undo" operations? Use something like the command pattern for this?
Or... is the event aggregator not a good pattern for this.

I'm starting to think that maybe events should be used for less "mission critical" items, such as emailing and logging.
My initial thought was to limit dependencies by using the event aggregator pattern.
You want the event to be committed in the same transaction as the operation on your database.
In this particular scenario, you can push the event on a queue, which enlists in your transaction, so that the event will never go out unless the aggregate is persisted. This will make creating the PDF eventual consistent; if creating the PDF fails, you can fix the problem, and have it automatically retried.

Handling an event before it actually happened (committed) only works if the event handler participates in the transaction. Make the event handler transactional (for instance by storing the PDF in a database), or publish and handle events after the transaction committed.
Who should be responsible for handling domain events? Application services, domain services or entities itself?
Let's use simple example for this question.
Let's say we work on shop application, and we have an application service dedicated to order operations. In this application Order is an aggregate root and following rules, we can work only with one aggregate within single transaction. After Order is placed, it is persisted in a database. But there is more to be done. First of all, we need to change number of items available in the inventory and secondly notify some other part of a system (probably another bounded context) that shipping procedure for that particular order should be started. Because, as already stated, we can modify only one aggregate within transaction, I think about publishing OrderPlacedEvent that will be handled by some components in the separate transactions.
Question arise: which components should handle this type of event?
I'd like to:
1) Application layer if the event triggers modification of another Aggregate in the same bounded context.
2) Application layer if the event trigger some infrastructure service.
e.g. An email is sent to the customer. So an application service is needed to load order for mail content and mail to and then invoke infrastructure service to send the mail.
3) I prefer a Domain Service personally if the event triggers some operations in another bounded context.
e.g. Shipping or Billing, an infrastructure implementation of the Domain Service is responsible to integrate other bounded context.
4) Infrastructure layer if the event need to be split to multiple consumers. The consumer goes to 1),2) or 3).
For me, the conclusion is Application layer if the event leads to an seperate acceptance test for your bounded context.
By the way, what's your infrastructure to ensure durability of your event? Do you include the event publishing in the transaction?
These kind of handlers belong to application layer. You should probably create a supporting application service's method too. This way you can start separate transaction.
I think the most common and usual place to put the EventHandlers is in the application layer. Doing the analogy with CQRS, EventHandlers are very similar to CommandHandlers and I usually put them both close to each other (in the application layer).
