How to use CKEDITOR.replace after CKEDITOR.inline - ckeditor

I'm using CKEDITOR in inline mode with multiple editors per page. To create them, I use <textarea> tags in the HTML and then run a script that executes CKEDITOR.inline() against each of them as soon as the webpage is loaded.
That works fine as long as I define my final configuration in "config.js", but I need to update one of the configuration options dynamically.
Here's my script, using JQuery to loop thru the <textarea> elements after the page is loaded. As a diagnostic, I have the CKEDITOR.replace() sandwiched between alert statements. This code replaces the first <textarea> with an editor and displays the first alert statement. However, it quits during the CKEDITOR.replace() statement and never displays the second alert.
$(function () {
$("textarea").each(function () {
editor = CKEDITOR.inline($(this)[0]);
alert("Before replace, editor=" + editor);
CKEDITOR.replace(editor, {
filebrowserImageUploadUrl: "/new/url/to/be/executed"
});
alert("After replace");
})
});
Not only does the second alert not execute, but the configuration option I'm trying to update remains as it appears in "config.js".
I think I need to specify something other than "editor" as the first parameter for the CKEDITOR.replace() statement, but I don't know what.

After more research, I discovered that I can set configuration options within the CKEDITOR.inline method call. Here's a working version of the script:
$(function () {
$("textarea").each(function () {
CKEDITOR.inline($(this)[0], {
filebrowserImageUploadUrl: "/new/url/to/be/executed"
});
});
});

jQuery Delegate not binding like I want it to

Using jQuery 1.7
I'm having trouble binding a Click event to some dynamically loaded content.
I've looked around, tried .live, .delegate and .on, and I just can't get it to work.
This is my code:
$(".fileexplorer_folderdlg").delegate(".delete", "click", function () {
console.log("Hello world!");
});
The thing is, .fileexplorer_folderdlg is dynamically loaded. If I use .fileexplorer (not dynamically loaded), it works, but I have more elements with the .delete class that I do not wish to bind to (and neither element classes can be renamed or changed for various reasons).
I also tried using .fileexplorer_folderdlg .delete as the .delegate selector, didnt work either!
Of course I could just add another unique class to the elements I wish to bind to, but this really should work, right?
I believe this would work:
$(document).on('click', '.delete', function() {
if ($(this).closest('.fileexplorer_folderdlg').length) {
console.log('hello, world!');
}
});
or even just:
$(document).on('click', '.fileexplorer_folderdlg .delete', function() {
console.log('hello, world!');
});
As you've found, you can't bind on .fileexplorer_folderdlg because it's dynamic. You therefore need to bind on some static element that will contain that element at some point in the future.
Instead, this binds on the document (but will unfortunately fire for every single click on the document thereafter).
EDIT by Jeff
Although the code above did not work, modifying it a bit did the job, although not the most desirable solution.
$(document).on('click', '.delete', function () {
if($(this).closest(".fileexplorer") != null)
console.log("Thanks for your help!");
});
It works, but this event is fired for all other .delete classes, of which there are many. What I do not understand though, is why using .fileexplorer_folderdlg .delete did not work!

Loading a hidden div into an AJAX jQuery UI tab (future DOM element)

I have been trying to manipulate content that is loaded into jQuery UI tabs via AJAX.
As you can imagine, these elements are "future" DOM elements and aren't manipulated by normal $(".someClass")functions.
I've read using .live() for event handling is now deprecated using jQuery 1.7+ and is replaced by the new .on() method.
My issue is that the div I want to hide, when it loads in an AJAX tab, must be manipulated after the initial DOM load and is not bound to a click event at first.
My functions, which are currently wrapped in $() are below.
I think I have the syntax correct for links that use a click handler, but I'm not sure of the correct way to ".hide()" my "hiddenStory" div at load.
I also think that the functions themselves shouldn't be wrapped in an overall $()?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
$(function(){
// this .hiddenStory div below is what I want to hide on AJAX load
// need syntax and/or new methods for writing this function
$(".hiddenStory").hide();
// this is a function that allows me to toggle a "read more/read less" area
// on the "hiddenStory" div
$(".showMoreOrLess").on('click', (function() {
if (this.className.indexOf('clicked') != -1 ) {
$(this).removeClass('clicked');
$(this).prev().slideUp(500);
$(this).html("Read More" + "<span class='moreUiIcon'></span>");
}
else {
$(this).addClass('clicked');
$(this).prev().slideDown(500);
$(this).html("See Less" + "<span class='lessUiIcon'></span>");
}
}));
});
// prevents default link behavior
// on BBQ history stated tab panes with
// "showMoreOrLess" links
$('.showMoreOrLess').click(function (event)
{
event.preventDefault();
// here you can also do all sort of things
});
// /prevents default behavior on "showMoreOrLess" links
Could you set the display: none via CSS and override it when you wanted to show the element's content? Another option, if you have to do it this way would be to add the `$(".hiddenStory").hide() in the callback from the AJAX load that is populating the element. For example:
$(".hiddenStory").load("http://myurl.com", function(){
$(".hiddenStory").hide();
}
);
If you aren't using the .load method, you should have some sort of call back to tie into (e.g. success if using $.ajax...)

Jquery code not executing on elements that didn't exist on page load

I have a web application that loads javascript on page load:
$(function() {
$('.modal-delete').click(function() {
alert();
});
});
I have a html page with a series of buttons which alert a blank message box when they're clicked:
<button class="modal-delete btn danger"></button>
which works fine.
However, a have some AJAX calls that generate more buttons just like the ones above but NOT on page load! They can be created at any time. These buttons do not do anything but they're meant to load the alerts. They're identical but because they never existed on page load, the Jquery code doesn't work on these buttons. How do I attach the same code to these buttons too?
Many thanks :).
I think you'll want jQuery's 'live()' function:
$('.modal-delete').live('click', function() {
alert();
});
This binds to the elements which match but also rebinds when new elements are added in the future:
"Attach an event handler for all elements which match the current selector, now and in the future"
Change the ready code to this...
$(function() {
$("document").on("click", ".modal-delete", function() {
alert("click");
});
});

Adding handler to form inside div, in the future

I am using the following code to direct the results from a form to a specific div.
$(window).load(function () {
$("#form1").submit(function() {
$.post($(this).attr("action"), $(this).serialize(), function(html) {
$("#resultsDiv").html(html);
});
return false; // prevent normal submit
});
});
How can I apply this (or any) handler to future forms that may be created within an updated div ( with new yet to created content inserted into the div at some point in the future)?
I have looked at the .on but I do not see an event for the updating or reloading of a div.
I have tried adding a similar function to the above, but replacing (window) with ("#thefutureDivID"), but no luck.
The best place to add the handler is right after you know the element exists. So, right after this line:
$("#resultsDiv").html(html);
you can add your code that references $("#thefutureDivID").

jQuery Functions need to run again after ajax is complete

I am developing a website that parses rss feeds and displays them based on category. You can view it here: http://vitaminjdesign.com/adrian
I am using tabs to display each category. The tabs use ajax to display a new set of feeds when they are clicked.
I am also using two other scripts- One called equalheights, which re-sizes all of the heights to that of the tallest item. And the other script I am using is called smart columns, which basically resize your columns so it always fills the screen.
The first problem I am having is when you click a new tab (to display feeds within that category). When a new tab is clicked, the console shows a jQuery error:
$(".block").equalHeights is not a function
[Break On This Error] $(".block").equalHeights();
The main problem is that each feed box fills up the entire screen's width (after you click on a tab), even if there are multiple feed boxes in that category.
MY GUESS - although all of the feeds (across all tabs) are loaded on pageload, when a new tab is selected, both jQuery scripts need to be run again. any ideas on how I can make this work properly?
One thing to note - I used the ajaxSuccess method for making equalHeights work on the first page...but it wont work after a tab is clicked.
My jQuery code for the tabs are below:
$(".tab_content").hide(); //Hide all content
$("ul.tabs li:first").addClass("active").show(); //Activate first tab
$(".tab_content:first").show(); //Show first tab content
$("#cities li:nth-child(1)").addClass('zebra');
$("#column li ul li:nth-child(6)").addClass('zebra1');
//On Click Event
$("ul.tabs li").click(function() {
$("ul.tabs li").removeClass("active"); //Remove any "active" class
$(this).addClass("active"); //Add "active" class to selected tab
$(".tab_content").hide(); //Hide all tab content
var activeTab = $(this).find("a").attr("href"); //Find the href attribute value to identify the active tab + content
$(activeTab).fadeIn(); //Fade in the active ID content
$(".block").equalHeights();
return false;
});
Thanks to Macy (see answer below), I have brought my jQuery script to the following: (still does not work)
$(document).ajaxSuccess(function(){
var script = document.createElement('script');
script.src = 'js/equalHeight.js';
document.body.appendChild(script);
equalHeight($(".block"));
I found some small problems in your code. I am not sure that my suggestions will solve all the problems, but I decide to describe my first results here.
1) You should remove comma before the '}'. Currently the call look like $("#column").sortable({/**/,});
2) The function equalHeight is not jQuery plugin. It is the reason why the call $(".block").equalHeights(); inside your 'click' event handler follows to the error "$(".block").equalHeights is not a function" which you described. You should change the place of the code to equalHeight($(".block")); like you use it on other places.
3) The script http://vitaminjdesign.com/adrian/js/equalHeight.js defines the function equalHeight only and not start any actions. Once be loaded it stay on the page. So you should not load it at the end of every ajax request. So I suggest to reduce the script
$(document).ajaxSuccess(function(){
var script = document.createElement('script');
script.src = 'http://vitaminjdesign.com/adrian/js/equalHeight.js';
document.body.appendChild(script);
equalHeight($(".block"));
$("a[href^='http:']:not([href*='" + window.location.host + "'])").each(function() {
$(this).attr("target", "_blank");
});
});
to
$(document).ajaxSuccess(function(){
equalHeight($(".block"));
$("a[href^='http:']:not([href*='" + window.location.host + "'])").each(function() {
$(this).attr("target", "_blank");
});
});
4) I suggest to change the code of http://vitaminjdesign.com/adrian/js/equalHeight.js from
function equalHeight(group) {
tallest = 0;
group.each(function() {
thisHeight = $(this).height();
if(thisHeight > tallest) {
tallest = thisHeight;
}
});
group.height(tallest);
}
to
function equalHeight(group) {
var tallest = 0;
group.each(function() {
var thisHeight = $(this).height();
if(thisHeight > tallest) {
tallest = thisHeight;
}
});
group.height(tallest);
}
to eliminate the usage of global variables tallest and thisHeight. I recommend you to use JSLint to verify all your JavaScript codes. I find it very helpful.
5) I recommend you to use any XHTML validator to find some small but sometime very important errors in the markup. Try this for example to see some errors. The more you follow the XHTML standards the more is the probability to have the same results of the page in different web browsers. By the way, you can dramatically reduce the number of the errors in your current code if the scripts included in the page will be in the following form
<script type="text/javascript">
//<![CDATA[
/* here is the JavaScript code */
//]]>
</script>
I didn't analysed the full code but I hope that my suggestions will solve at least some of problems which you described in your question.
Essentially, when you add a new element to the document, the equalheights script has not attached its behavior to that new element. So, the "quick fix", is probably to re-embed the equalheights script after an ajax request has completed so that it re-attaches itself to all elements on the page, including the elements you just added.
Before this line: $(".block").equalHeights(); , add a line of script which re-embeds/re-runs your equalheights script.
$.getScript('<the location of your equalHeightsScript>');
$.getScript('<the location of your smartColumnsScript>');
$(".block").equalHeights();
or
var script = document.createElement('script');
script.src = '<the location of your script>';
document.body.appendChild(script);
A better solution would be to upgrade the plugin so it takes advantage of live. However, I'm not up to that at the moment :)
Some Error Here
$("ul.tabs li").click(function() {
$("ul.tabs li").removeClass("active"); //Remove any "active" class
$(this).addClass("active"); //Add "active" class to selected tab
$(".tab_content").hide(); //Hide all tab content
.
.
.
});
Should be re-written like this
$("ul.tabs li").click(function() {
$(this).addClass("active").Siblings("li").removeClass("active");; //Remove any "active" class Add "active" class to selected tab
$(".tab_content").hide(); //Hide all tab content
.
.
.
});
I don't think you need to run the scripts again after the ajax, or at least that's not the "main" problem.
You seem to have some problems in the script smartColumn.js
Right now it seems to only operate on the ul with the id "column" ('#column'), and it is working on the one UL#column you do have, but of course your HTML has many other "columns" all of which have the class "column" ('.column') that you want it to work on as well.
Just to get the beginning of what you are trying to do, change all the selectors in smartColumn.js that say 'ul#column' to say 'ul.column' instead, and then alter the HTML so that the first "column" has a class="column" rather than an id="column".
That should solve the 100% wide columns at least.
That should solve your "Main" Problem. But there are other problems.
