Xcode 6.1: Loading a plug-in failed - xcode

I updated Xcode from AppStore but I couldn't open it due to this error message:
"Loading a plug-in failed
The plug-in or one of its prerequisite plug-ins may be missing or damaged and may need to be reinstalled"
I tried uninstalling Xcode by deleting it from Application folder and reinstall it but the problem is still the same.
Can anyone figure out what's wrong, and how to fix this? Thank you.

Did you by any chance update your Python? Anyway, I did and I think I also removed python 2.7 for some reason. Turns out, Xcode uses python 2.7 and is required for Xcode 6.0 onwards.
Simply download python 2.7, install it and all should be good.

I have run into the exact same issue with XCode 6.3 and brew upgrade python to version 2.7.10.
For whatever reason the symlinks at /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/ were not updated...
The fix:
sudo rm -f /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7
sudo ln -s /usr/local/Cellar/python/2.7.10/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7 /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7
sudo rm -f /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current
sudo ln -s /usr/local/Cellar/python/2.7.10/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7 /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current
(obviously your paths/versions might differ)
And then XCode starts working again.

For me the problem had to do with a missing iTunes.app. I had previously deleted iTunes, but it turns out that Xcode 9 (and possibly Xcode 8) needs the iTunes.app, and will fail with the mysterious "Loading a plug-in failed" error if iTunes is missing on your system.
Downloading and installing iTunes from https://www.apple.com/ca/itunes/download/ solved the issue for me.
By the way, you may be able to get more info about what's causing the plug-in error by running xcodebuild on the command line.

MobileDevice.pkg untrusted, cannot open Xcode after OS X update

After an automatic update of macOS v10.15 (Catalina), I am unable to open Xcode. Xcode prompts me to install additional components but the installation fails because of MobileDevice.pkg (Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Resources/Packages)
I have found multiple answers on how to locate MobileDevice.pkg and that I should try to install it directly, but when I try to do this the installation fails too. I have also tried updating Xcode from App Store, but the update failed when it was nearly finished.
Has anyone experienced the same behaviour? Should I reset the Mac to default and install macOS v10.13 (High Sierra) or Catalina from scratch or it is a problem of Xcode and re-install would do the job?
I have found a discussion here that was posted today and is probably regarding the same issue and it seems like many people are dealing with it, too.

Edit and set the date of your Mac as October 1st, 2019.
I didn't have Xcode 11.1 installed and even though I could open and run the 11.0 after the below workaround I could not update to 11.1 as the update always failed. So I have just re-installed the whole app from the App-Store - you could probably also do this instead of the below method.
I have tried setting my system time to 1st October 2019 when the certificate should had been still valid. After that I tried to open Xcode and followed the component install which went well and now I am able to work with Xcode again.
I had a similar problem, where I installed Xcode 11.1, and installed the components and everything within the same folder where I had Xcode 10.2.1. Then, I tried to go back to Xcode 10.2.1 and couldn't opened as it was asking me to install components again, and when I tried I was getting this error.
The package “MobileDeviceDevelopment.pkg” is untrusted.
So, the workaround that fixed it for me was navigating to...
/Users/YourUser/Applications/Xcode\ 10.2.1.app/Contents/Resources/
Then, deleting MobileDeviceDevelopment.pkg and everything went back to normal :)
I hope this helps anyone else with this issue. Cheers!
At macOS Catalina
cd /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Resources/Packages
sudo rm -rf MobileDevice.pkg
sudo rm -rf MobileDeviceDevelopment.pkg
Try again.
It means you entered on the Xcode downloaded packages and remove it. I really don't understand how Apple do but if you remove Xcode will download it again and revalidates.
Some remarks, I'm on XCODE Version 11.0 (11A420a) if you are not this is not guaranteed to work.
You may solve this issue by setting the date of your Mac as October 1st, 2019. But this is just a hack! The real solution (suggested by apple) is this:
All you have to is to upgrade Xcode
But there is a known Issues on apple developers site
Xcode may fail to update from the Mac App Store after updating to macOS Catalina. (56061273)
Apple suggests this:
To trigger a new download you can delete the existing Xcode.app or temporarily change the file extension so it is no longer visible to the App Store.
Always working solution for all Xcode issues:
Go here and log in.
Then download the xib from here.
More information here on this answer.
##Answer to this specific issue##
Get rid of those packages.
cd /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Resources/Packages
sudo rm -rf MobileDevice.pkg
sudo rm -rf MobileDeviceDevelopment.pkg
Xcode will install all of them again for you.
rm -rf /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Resources/Packages/*.pkg
It will work and re-open the x-code
Try to run Xcode-beta instead of Xcode to install additional components. After that you'll be able to use Xcode release.
For me, I just uninstalled (deleted the app from the Applications folder) and then went back to app store and clicked the cloud icon and it downloaded fresh and installed. Now all is good and back to normal.
Here's what I did to resolve:
Right click the xcode.app > show package contents > Contents > Developer > Platforms > iPhoneOS.platform > Device Support
I am on XCode 10.2.1. I had downloaded a 13.7 folder and contents from an external GitHub site and imported that folder into here for running my app on a physical iPhone Xr. I am prevented from upgrading to Catalina on my dev machine. Deleting the 13.7 folder and then re-launching XCode resolved the issue for me.
Reinstall Xcode 11.1 from https://developer.apple.com/download/more/ . Afterwards the update works.
This requires Xcode 11.1 to be installed.
I was not able to update to Xcode 11.1 until I updated macOS Catalina to 10.15.1. After updating my macOS, I was able to install Xcode 11.1, which also allowed the installation of the additional components package.

Brew install on Mojave

I did these steps:
Updated to Mojave
Installed Xcode 10 beta3
Ran this command: sudo xcode-select -switch /Applications/Xcode-beta.app/
Now I'm trying to install node8:
brew install node#8
And it gives me this error:
Error: The Command Line Tools header package must be installed on Mojave.
The installer is located at: /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages/macOS_SDK_headers_for_macOS_10.14.pkg
Still, doing
install -pkg /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages/macOS_SDK_headers_for_macOS_10.14.pkg
does nothing, since there's no such file in my system. Where could I get it?
Go to /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages/macOS_SDK_headers_for_macOS_10.14.pkg location and install package manually. And brew will start working.
I want to try and answer this question and also for those that come later that installed Mojave and had an older Xcode version installed. The process is the same minus that if you have Xcode 10, you don't need to install it again from my understanding.
The folder is hidden and was not accessible even with a sudo find command, however, I figured out that copying the absolute path and then pasting it in your browser address bar will give you the download and access to the folder that you need to fix brew install.
I posted a video here- https://youtu.be/GfnhSirTCGM that walks you thru part of my steps above. After you do the SDK headers download, its likely that unless you already are running Xcode 9.4, you will need to visit, https://developer.apple.com/download/more/ and look for Xcode 9.4 to install. Also grab the 10.14 command line tools as well. The lesson that should be learned here is that Apple calls it "Beta" for a reason and if you are a developer that knows the pains of setup, it is a bad idea. I hope that I was helpful! The last thing is, INSTALL XCODE THEN COMMAND LINE TOOLS-IN THAT ORDER OR IT ERRORS OUT! and then we do this all over again. Cheers!
It appears as though Apple has released a patch for the bug and it is available through the system preferences. 14 July 2018
Broken command line tools:
Xcode Location on the Apple developers website:
Location of command line tools:
Do not install Xcode from the Mac App Store because a different version is required!
Command line tools 10.14 update:
As of October 2018, the solution for making brew and brew install succeed is to:
install latest Xcode fom AppStore
run Xcode and install command line tools
add the line before to your profile or somethign similar
export CFLAGS="-I/usr/local/include -L/usr/local/lib -I$(brew --prefix openssl)/include -I$(xcrun --show-sdk-path)/usr/include"
No need to download Xcode manually, but you may want to remove the beta version if you installed it.
The magic part is at the end, where xcrun obtains the correct location of the SDK.
In terminal, you should first input the commands below
cd /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages
open .
you will open the directory on desktop,
then double click the pkg file to install it.

XCode prerequisite version check failed? Unable to package app with Intune Packager

Edit: It appears the latest Release Notes from Apple indicate massive changes with the build system. Currently, Intune's Package Manager hasn't been recently updated, so I don't expect a fix besides downgrading until update.
I just updated XCode and OSX and ran the Intune MAM packager as always, but now instead of succeeding, I get this:
Version of MACOSX is 10.13.5
XCode prerequisite version check failed: failure in executing the xcodebuild command.
Missing prerequisite.
Cause of the error to be provided for investigation:Error Domain=IntuneAppPackager Code=22 "XCode version 5 or greater is required to run this tool." UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=XCode version 5 or greater is required to run this tool.}
I already had to re-enable certs to match the profile, but this seems unrelated. I have the latest XCode and the build tools installed via default settings. I googled different parts of this error and nothing came back. This could be InTune's mam packager but the error itself is relatively specific in saying XCode Build tools.
Try this code in your terminal:
xcode-select -p, then check if that path is correct path of your Xcode.
If this doesn't work, try this code:
sudo xcode-select --switch /correct path of the xcode app.
For example:
sudo xcode-select --switch /Applications/Xcode_7.3.1.app/Contents/Developer
This is what I did, and it works!
I have Xcode installed via App Store and came across the same error after switching to a new version of Intune MAM Packager.
sudo xcode-select --switch /Applications/Xcode_7.3.1.app/Contents/Developer
That worked for me

How to install Xcode 4.6 on Lion, needed for upgrading ruby with RVM

I was actually trying to update ruby on my OSX 10.7.5 with RVM, and after typing in the following command:
rvm install ruby
I got the following response:
Searching for binary rubies, this might take some time.
Checking requirements for osx.
Installing requirements for osx.
Updating system.......
Error running 'requirements_osx_brew_update_system ruby-2.0.0-p247',
please read /Users/username/.rvm/log/1381215459_ruby-2.0.0-p247/update_system.log
Requirements installation failed with status: 1.
Then, when I checked out the update_system.log, it showed me the actual code of a function called requirements_osx_brew_update_system(), which contained the following error message:
Xcode version older than 4.6.2 installed, download and install newer version from:
http://connect.apple.com
After installation open Xcode, go to Downloads and install Command Line Tools.
Then I proceeded to find an update for Xcode, but only found the latest Xcode 5.0, which is apparently incompatible with my OSX 10.7. Although ultimately my goal is to update ruby and install rails, which I'm sure there are many other ways to do, I'd still like to find out if I could possibly install Xcode 4.6.2 on my OSX 10.7.
UPDATE: Sorry folks, apparently my version of XCode is v4.6.1 so updating the command line tools will not work in all cases (I know for a fact it doesn't work if you're on XCode v4.3.3). YMMV
I ran into the same issue trying to do an rvm install. I got an error telling me that I needed XCode 4.6.2 or later.
Turns out all it needed was the latest version of the XCode command line tools. I followed the instructions for upgrading my command line tools from this macports article:
open the Xcode application
go to the Preferences window
open the Downloads section
click the Install button next to "Command Line Tools"
After doing this I was able to run my rvm install command and it didn't complain about upgrading XCode anymore (and finished successfully).
It seems you're going to have to install under Xcode 5. So go to https://developer.apple.com/downloads/ and log in with your developer ID to get to the older versions. There should be a 4.6.3 that you could potentially download, or even 4.6.2.
Or you could upgrade your OSX to 10.8.
Whichever you prefer.
I can't give you a direct link to it, since you need your developer information to log in yourself. But all the downloads you need are in the link provided above once you log in.
Open xcode and update it via the app store.
Then
xcode-select --install
This will install xcode via the command line

Xcode 4.2 uninstall crashes Xcode 4.3

When XCode 4.3.1 was installed, it asked me if I wanted to remove 4.2. I said no, and proceeded using it. Last night, I decided to uninstall 4.2 with the script included. Now, whenever I run XCode 4.3, it crashes 90% of the time. Has this happened to anyone else, and is there a fix?
When uninstalling xcode 4.3.1 try removing the preferences from xcode in ~/Library/Preferences/ too. It sometimes help me with other applications.
This appears to fix the problem
Enter these commands into the Terminal.
sudo ln -s /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer /
sudo ln -s /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/OtherFrameworks/DevToolsFoundation.framework /Developer/Library/PrivateFrameworks
