I'm experiencing so many different problems installing WEC 2013 - it fails at various points, depending of what I select. I tried downloading all the different update versions ISOs from MSDN and they all fail in one way or the other. One of the many failure examples is this dialog:
I purposefully did NOT select Shared Source check button on the previous screen, yet the installer wants to install it. It's nowhere to be found on the DVD. It says to click the download button but download button is disabled. If I click OK, it just re-pops up the same window. If I click cancel, it aborts the installation.
Installation log is not particularly helpful, either:

Operating system is Windows 8.1 Enterprise with Visual Studio 2013 Professional, Update 4 installed. If anyone could shed some light on a "recipe" for successful WEC installation, it would be greatly appreciated.
I got it installed. The ISO was: en_windows_embedded_compact_2013_update_5_x86_and_x64_dvd_4083417.iso
It would not install without Platform Builder (which I don't need) - it is not enabled on setup unless Application Builder (separate download) is previously installed. Without Application Builder, Platform Builder and a couple of other components have red "X" icon next to them but setup allows to continue only to fail after it runs for a while.

When I open WebMatrix it works without problem and shows the start page.
When I click 'My sites' and choose my site or choose My site by click 'Open'=> My site or create new site (and choose the site type: Empty, App Gallery or Template Gallery) WebMatrix crashes. Note: It crashes when it needs to show the site pages.
I tried to re-install WebMatrix but that didn't help. I also tried to change the Workspace(by clicking 'Options' on the start page).
When it crashes, I get the message 'Windows is looking for a solution to the problem.' (My computer isn't in English so that might not exactly be the words) and then I am asked if I want to close/debug the program. I click 'Debug' and choose Visual Studio. I don't know how to debug a program, but I tried and it says to me that:
System.NullReferenceException was unhandled
Message: An unhandled exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in Microsoft.WebMatrix.Core.dll
Additional information: Object reference not set to an instance of an object [-translated].
I have searched on the internet and here and I didn't find any solution to my problem.
Actual Answer
This bug is in the market for a time now. I have seen similar issue on another forum too, where the user was facing the same issue and same thing he tried but all in vain.
I think you need to wait for the next Update for your System, or try removing each and every component that WebMatrix installed, that means all the .NET Frameworks (4th version), Sql Dependencies Sql Server Ce, and all other files that were shipped along with WebMatrix to your computer. Remove them, and start the installing process once again freshly.
If nothing does the job, please uninstall WebMatrix 3 and install WebMatrix 2: Click here for link. I know it is awkward to go back a version, but you'll have to. Secondly you can mention this bug on their support/suggestion page. They would fix it.
http://webmatrix.uservoice.com/
I hope that would help you. And you'd be back in developing the apps :-)
Just for information
Secondly, do you understand what is meant by debug? Debugging is a method or process to remove the bugs from a software or an application etc. When you chose Visual Studio, it provided you or not provided you with the WebMatrix source code, I am not sure I never tried it. And you tried out debugging it. The exception is gave you, was a message saying that the parameter you're passing onto the next stage is a null. Which means it doesn't even exist and thus the value or the method cannot be executed and it breaks.
I have a trial version of the InstallSheild. It works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine. However uninstalling on other machine it fails to display the Final complete page(The last uninstall page)
To be clear it uninstall correctly but it just fails to show the completed page.
Are the other machine missing a component I need to package with the installer or is this a permissions problem?
You're question leaves out a few key details:
How are you invoking the uninstall?
What UI are you seeing?
Can we see the contents of your log?
In general, most people uninstall via Add Remove Programs aka Programs and Features. In this scenario Windows Installer only displays a progress bar and then exits as the UI sequence is bypassed per best practices.
I'm fighting with VS 2010 and this error that seems to be very common in previous versions, but it looks like not everyone is having it in the latest version.
I've got VS 2010 SP1 and I'm getting this error quite often.
The problem is that it's not even enough to restart VS in order to make it go away, I usually have to restart my PC, and I'm losing a lot of time doing this (it's quite frequent)
I've got Windows 7 32bits (can't upgrade to 64 bits, the company doesn't allow it), and I can't do things like creating another solution (please don't reply this :) )
I've used the command to make devenv.exe LARGEADDRESSAWARE, but the error keeps on happening.
My virtual memory size is set to automatic, and the weird thing is that VS doesn't even take 2GB of ram, so I don't know if the error is really because it's lacking memory, or if it's some bug in the program
Any ideas, things to try, something?
I tried everything else as well. The problems continued to come back until I tried

Click on Start > Run > regedit & press Enter
Find this key name HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameters
Locate IRPStackSize
If this value does not exist Righ Click on Parameters key and Click on New > Dword Value and type in IRPStackSize under the name.
The name of the value must be exactly (combination of uppercase and lowercase letters) the same as what I have above.
Right Click on the IRPStackSize and click on Modify
Select Decimal enter a value higher than 15(Maximum Value is 50 decimal) and Click Ok
You can close the registry editor and restart your computer.

I think I got the best results when I turned off C++ headers index. YMMV
Check the output project type in properties. In my case it was changed to "Windows Application" though it was a "Console Application".
Switching back to console application solved my problem.
I have a very simple VS2005 deployment project that aims to install for all users on a PC.
All the application files are written to %Program Files%\MyProg. A shortcut is created in the start menu and the startup folder. No registry settings or anything else are created. I have set
'InstallAllUsers' to true.
The created MSI runs fine and installs the software. It works without any problems when running under the user account from which it was installed.
When logging in as another user, the start menu and startup icons are present. It attempts to launch the application however an installation window pops up and states that 'the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.' The installer will only proceed if pointed to the original MSI file.
Why does this happen? I want my application to be installed completely for all users when it is installed by a single user.
edit: Solution
I was getting similar event log messages as shown on this page. In my case it turned out to be as simple as ensuring that the User's Program Menu had its 'AlwaysCreate' attribute turned to false. If it was true, windows would try and recreate the folder when a new user logged in. This somehow required the invocation of the installer and thus resulted in the 'please insert the installation media' prompts.
It is actually kind of hard to say without some more information. I would recommend checking on the rights in the installed folder (seeing if only the one who installed it has rights) and also checking the file list for the directory (to make sure VS didn't automatically place some files in the user profile). Let me know what comes out from those two steps and we can try to keep digging if that didn't shed any light on it.
Keep in mind chances are this is most def not specific to Visual Studio, look at this MS support article here where the same message is coming back for office.
I know this is an old post but I thought I'd add another cause and solution in case the above didn't work for you.
There is a bug in VS Setup and Deployment Projects which results in registry values being entered into HKCU instead of HKLM irrespective of the InstallAllUsers property being set to true.
You must use Orca msi editor to change the registry root for "DesktopFolder" and "ProgramMenuFolder" from either 1 or 2 to -1. The issue cannot be resolved via VS.

I had downloaded and installed VS 2010 Ultimate evaluation for 30 days. It allows me to get a 60-day extension if I register. My register just ended.
2 days ago, I got the extension key by registering but did not enter it because I thought I should wait till the product evaluation period expires.
Now, when I open up VS 2010, it gives me a dialog box with only two buttons:
a) Learn more about upgrading. This takes me to the same page that allows me either to buy or generate an extension key.
b) Close. This closes VS 2010.
How do I enter in the extension key now?
In order to update the product key you need to be logged on with administrator privileges. Try logging on as an admin and the go to the control panel > uninstall/change a program > Enter the product key > click "upgrade."
Here is a link from MSDN on how to do it for VS 2008 trial editions. It is the same for VS 2010:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc442563(v=vs.90).aspx
I did the same exact thing and it looks like the only option I could find after tons of googling is redownloading and installing the latest version to use your new key with. Here is the page I found with links to the downloads:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/bb984878.aspx
NOTE: I have not yet downloaded this and tried the key I received from the 60 day extension but will let you know if this works when I get a chance to DL it in the next couple days unless anyone else can confirm.
(Probably too late, but here's an idea that may help someone...)
Try setting your computer's date back to a point in time when your trial was valid (e.g. 1 month ago). I've just tried this on an expired 2010RC and it ran happily, allowing access to the Help>Register menu option.
Of course, attempting to register in this way may detect that you're running "in the past" and refuse (at which point, try setting the clock back and see if it'll let you retry) - but it's worth a try before going through the pain of reinstalling the whole thing from scratch.
Try "Help -> Register Product". It can be your answer
