I'm using TFS Server 2013 en Visual Studio 2013. I want to make the TFS Server available via the internet so that (only) certain developers/ipaddresses can work at home.
My question is: What port does TFS Server use to connect to Visual studio? In other words: What port must I open/forward in my firewall for this to work?
There is no communication from TFS to Visual Studio as all traffic flows the other way.
Visual Studio connects with 8080 by default and 443 if secured.
I would however recommend that you leave everything to Visual studio online (http://tfs.visualstudio.com) as It is already secured and does not need any firewalls to be opened.

forgive my dumb question, but I have a new project solution in my Visual Studio 2017. Is there anything I need to do on my local IIS Manager as far as Default Websites, in order to run that solution in VS locally?
Visual Studio 2013, 2015 and 2017 use IIS Express by default, which runs with its own separate applicationHost.config file and shares no configuration with the "real" IIS, this also means that you cannot use IIS Manager to configure IIS Express.
If you do configure IIS to use your "Local IIS Web Server" instead of IIS Express then you will need to run Visual Studio elevated ("As Administrator") to give it permission to reconfigure your local IIS. I do not know how Visual Studio decides which IIS Website to add your application-binding to - I cannot find any information about this. I guess you'll have to experiment.
Note that using Local IIS means that the project may not be portable to other machines - so if you're working on a team and your coworkers have different IIS configurations then you'll be in a mess. You should always prefer IIS Express where possible.
I'm remoting into a development machine and working with visual studio 2017. I'm wondering if it's at all possible to do some port forwarding so when I'm debugging my application through visual studio in the remote machine that I can access the site through my local machine?
We have setup a trial version of TFS 2017 in order to see if we would like to purchase a full version for our development shop. Only one developer can connect to TFS 2017 with Visual Studio and at no point was he involved with the initial setup of TFS.
I am running Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise and I have tried the following items with no fruition on fixing the attached image.
Check that I can connect through a browser to TFS from my box. Works.
Check to see if I can telnet to the server on port 8080. Works.
White list Visual Studio and port 8080 in my firewall. Done.
Reinstall Visual Studio from scratch. Done.
Try to log into TFS from a different box using same credentials. Done and Works.
Clear cache for Visual Studio and TFS. Done.
Try running Visual Studio as Admin. Done.
I have tried all of the above (and quite a few other things) and at no point can I connect to TFS through Visual Studio. As it stands now I don't see my shop going down the road of using TFS.
If anyone has an idea for what to do, I'm all ears I would really like our shop to migrate to TFS based on what I have heard about it.
TF31002 is a very wide range of error messages, you might receive this error when you try to from Visual Studio or Team Explorer connect to VSTS or an on-premises Team Foundation Server (TFS).
Since the problem occurs on more than one computer, you could ask administrator, the event logs for the application-tier server to try to pinpoint the problem.
I will suggest you to disable your firewall first, White list sometimes not so thoroughly and try the connection again. If it's still not work, give a try with accessing your TFS with IP address (e.g. http://[ip]:8080/tfs) which may did the trick.
Also, you can use the table in Several users receive this error when they try to connect to an on-premises TFS to determine whether the server is misconfigured.
I too suffered with this myself. This is a Bug and has been patched by Visual Studio Team. Installing the patch helped me fix this error.
patch : VS14-KB3165756.exe

I can login to TFS ( now called visual studio online 2013 ) from my existing machine. Recently I got a new machine. I am trying to connect from this machine for the first time. I get "Unable to connect to the remote server" error. I think my port number may be incorrect.
What command can I issue on my working computer to know the correct port number used? ( I have tried 8080 already).
I am using "team" -> "connect to team foundation server" and then adding server.
You have to install Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Team Foundation Server Compatibility GDR (and don't forget to install SP1 first)
Then just specify your VSO account URL in the Connect dialog e.g. https://testaccount.visualstudio.com/
You don't need to add a port number, it should work without it
When remote debugging on a remote web server you need to have the remote debugging tools from Visual Studio installed on the web server.
Is it possible to run multiple versions of the msvsmon.exe at the same time?
How do people handle the case where some of the developers are running Visual Studio 2008 and others are useing 2010?
