I want to my Windows UWP app to target only specific devices e.g. desktop and mobile. How do I specify that my app should only target these devices? I have found nothing of interest in the Package.appxmanifest file, and project.json only specifies what SDK's the app should use.
There are two ways you can do it.
1 . Right click Package.appxmanifest, and click View code, you can find the following code in the Package.appxmanifest.
<Dependencies>
<TargetDeviceFamily Name="Windows.Universal" MinVersion="10.0.0.0" MaxVersionTested="10.0.0.0" />
</Dependencies>
You can modify the Name property to "Windows.Desktop" or "Windows.Mobile" to target a specific device type.
2 .When you submit you app in Windows Dev Center, you can specific you app are able to run which type of device.
In Pricing and availability step, you can do it as follow:
I think you'd better choose the second way.

Any idea why I can't disable the "Windows 10 Mobile" checkbox? I want to make my app available only for Windows 10 Desktop.
It seems like this submission you are viewing is already submitted. You will have to update the existing submission to be able to change its properties. You could do that for example in the Dashboard in the App overview section:
Then in the Packages section you could change the platforms:
Edit the app's manifest xml. So the app is only available on the desktop and resubmit it. There is no way to check or uncheck the platform check boxes
<Dependencies>
<TargetDeviceFamily Name="Windows.Desktop" MinVersion="10.0.x.0" MaxVersionTested="10.0.y.0"/>
</Dependencies>

I want to develop an app for Windows surface tablet and iOS mobile and iPad.
As I am a new user to Xamarin, when I created my first project,it shows 3 projects:-
hello.driod, hello.ios and hello.winPhone.
I have 3 questions based on this:-
How will I be able to write the same code and share for windows 8.1 and iOS?
and whenever I drag and drop the elements to the UI page, will the same elements be copied to both windows and iOS simultaneously or I got to add them seperately?
Currently I dont have a MAC to connect to my PC. Can I write the code and and there while testing it, connect it to a MAC or should it be connected during the whole process?
Please Help!
Using the same code depends on how your structure your app.
You can go the native route where you can share the bulk of your logic by containing it in a shared / PCL project (more on that here), but have platform specific code for your UI.
For example, if you have a cross platform app targeting iOS and Android you would still create the UI in a storyboard for iOS and AXML files for Android. Any code you want to "connect" to your UI would be specific to that platform as you would use the platform APIs. Any code that is not platform specific (i.e., not calling iOS or Android APIs) can go in your shared / PCL project.
Or you can choose Xamarin.Forms which adds a layer of abstraction by allowing you to write the UI in XAML once and have it work on all platforms. The advantage is increased code sharing as now your UI is also shared. The downside is to utilise platform specific features you'll need to implement DependencyService or custom renderers. Read more about Xamarin.Forms here.
As above, it depends. If you are going the native route, then no. If you are going with Xamarin.Forms, then you are using the same XAML code for the UI across platforms, but there is no drag and drop designer.
To build an iOS app you need to be connected to a Mac. You will also need to be connected to a Mac to use the iOS Designer.
I am using Visual Studio 2015 tools for Apache Cordova for mobile application development on Windows 7.
To build and run my app, I have to choose one solution platform and one target.
Is there any way to view the output on my browser just like a web app with no emulator?
When I press f5, the result will open in a browser in an emulator mode which I choose as system platform and target device. But I want to run my app like a web application, when you right click on index.html and select view in browser.
I look for a project setting or a ‘system platform’ and ‘target device’ value that work like that.
PS:Selecting any windows solution platform and local machine target needs Windows 8 or higher and the build process is failed.
Thank you.
The solution I found for my problem:
I used the url of my output result with emulator: "http://localhost:4400/index.html?enableripple=cordova-3.0.0-NexusS"
and then removed the emulator settings in url: "http://localhost:4400/index.html".
Using this url will cause some popups asking some things. These are for 'cordova.js' script which is referenced in index.html file of cordova project. As we do not need this in browser, commenting the line <script src="cordova.js"></script> from index.html, no dialog will open any more and the project will compile so faster for initial design that do not need cordova.
Now I will use chrome mobile mode (f12-> phone icon) to see mobile view of my app.

The answer depend on your expectations.
If you just want to view the page layout and test some of the associated Javascript, the answer is YES.
If you want to test the plugin libraries and associated JS, the answers is NO.
However, here are some items to be cautious with - either way.
When running your code on a device, you MUST wait for the
'deviceready'. There are not ifs, ands, ors, or buts on this - you
must wait.
You can emulate some of the plugins. This Summer some of HTML5 APIs have become available. If you want to write a shim, you can emulate some plugins with the HTML5 APIs, and use the Phonegap plugins on the mobile device. NOTE: some emulators now support HTML5 APIs.
Not all browsers are equal and not all webview libraries are equal. Cordova and Phonegap both use a webview library with their respective platforms. On Android, it is called Webview. On iOS, it is WKWebview. These libraries are finally starting to get some attention. So Google, Apple, Intel and others are all making competing libraries. *better for us* ;) One new library for Android is called crosswalk. Many developers like it, but it is bloated.
Best of Luck
I have a bunch of iPads that are all supervised, and that are enrolled into a MDM server (Mavericks Server). I've added the app to the specific device group, but when I go to the profile settings and Single App Mode the only apps I can select are the builtin ones.
Is there no way to use a third party (enterprise) app as the app for Single App Mode?
EDIT: If you use Apple Configurator and add the app there you can set Single App Mode to use that app, I would imagine that would be possible when doing the same in Apple's Profile Manager, but it doesn't seem to be working here.
EDIT2: Looking at Apple's documentation it does indeed seem to be possible to select a third party app for single app mode using their Profile Manager, so why isn't the app showing in the list for me?
http://images.apple.com/education/docs/assessment_with_ipad_mar2013_v2.pdf
Go to the Device Group, after installing the app (that you want to show in Single App Mode dropdown and lock it to) do "Update Info" (small icon in bottom-middle-left of screen) on all the devices in that group. Wait a bit, then go to Single App Mode screen again, the app should start appearing.Works for me. The "Update Info" thing also works for Single Device as well and you can lock to any new app installed from Profile Manger, doesn't matter if the app was installed while supervising through Configurator or not.
So interestingly enough in the new update for Server (3.1.1) this seems to be working. The Enterprise app is now listed in the dropdown box.
However there also is about 10 empty items in the box with no text description. So it's clearly still a bit buggy.
Do you know if the Windows Phone SDK offers an API that allows to add a custom App entry inside the Application Settings page?
I would like to create a new entry "AppXYZ" that links the settings page of the application.
Is this view reserved just for "system" applications or could also be used to add a link to an external app's settings?
Although not well-known, there is a way to do that. In WMAppManifest.xml you can specify that your app belongs in HubType="268435456". That way, it will be integrated there. This is not an officially-supported approach and I am yet to see a third-party app approved in the Store that would handle this.
You can link to the settings page of your own application but not to the windows phone settings page you show us in the screenshot. Developers are only allowed to show some of these by using the corresponding URL schmemes.
Unfortuantely there is no possibility to integrate your app to the official settings hub as a third party developer. Adding HubType="268435456" in your WMAppManifest.xml file will prevent a successful sumbission.
Sorry for the bad news...
