I've tried both VS2013 and the latest, 2015 with the same, incredibly simple chunk of code, and both programs completely freeze when I press debug/hit f5!
The mouse changes to a loading wheel except nothing happens and eventually I force close the program!
Any suggestion is helpful,
Thanks in advance
This problem is commonly caused by some anti-virus.
Here is a solution for Norton Antivirus.
And here for Avast.

Has anyone noticed that when debugging a code line by line by pressing F10, the yellow highlight is moving much slower than VS2012? It has to wait like a second to move to the next line when pressing F10. Line by line.
For me, this was caused by the .NET Reflector Visual Studio Extension.
I tried to disable all options, but only disabling it worked. Step over debugging is now back to normal and doesn't sometimes take 2-3 retries before moving to the next line.
Disable it in Tools / Extensions and Updates.
I had the same issue. Installing Visual Studio Update 1 fixed it for me.
Sire's solution worked for me too.
For me, the problem was the LastPass installation/extension. Uninstalling fixes the problem.
See this thread Visual Studio 2010 F10/F11 Stepping Slow, Toolbar Stepping Fine?
Since the past week I'm having a very bothering issue that blocks me from using Visual Studio.
For instance, here's what I normally see:
But as soon as I scroll a bit down (either with the arrow key, mouse wheel or the scroll bar), this is what I get:
As you can see, part of the frame seems to be "locked" in the screen.
The only way to see it right, is to make some other window cover VS's window, then going back to VS I see it right.
This is what I have tried (checking if the issue was solved after each step):
Check for updates
Repair VS2010
Remove R# and any other extension/add-in
Reinstall R# and any other extension/add-in
Remove VS2010 and any related software
Reinstall VS2010 + SP1 and updates
Remove any other unused software
Remove any recently installed/updated software
Run CCleaner
None of these steps solved the issue.
This happens only with VS2010, regardless the project or solution I'm opening.
I think you need to start looking beyond Visual Studio for issues. The next thing I'd look at is your graphics driver. Make sure you have the latest available version.
I have the same problem with VS 2012.
Scrolling up and down, does not refresh sections (rectangles) on my text editor view.
(unfortunately I've not enough reputation to post a screenshot.)
I managed to workaround it in VS 2012, by floating the editor.
i.e. Right Click on a file tab / Float All.
Otherwise I tried everything posted here, without any luck.
Hopefully someone out there knows how to undo this magic.
I had the same problem and it was due to the DameWare Development Mirror Driver.
I disabled it and the problem went away.
I'm having the same issue in VS 2015 pro.
Setting the editor windows to float fixes the problem which definitely looks like a bug in visual studio.
I'm on a Citrix virtual Desktop and the problem appears to be that a "column" of the editor (on the left side) is not redrawing properly after scrolling right, left, or down. For some reason scrolling up is fine.
For me, using VS 2013 Pro, the cause was having the JAWS Screen Reader installed, which, ominously, included a video interceptor. Once uninstalled VS started working normally again.
I had this same problem and it turns out it wasn't a graphics driver issue. The company I work for uses software that acts like a virtual monitor to remotely log into our PCs to install software and fix problems. It turns out that this extra virtual monitor was the problem. Disabling it fixed the scrolling in Visual Studio.
I had the same problem in Visual Studio 2017. When I changed the color theme to 'dark' the problem seemed to be fixed
Recently, the editor for VS2010 suddenly became slow when I installed some extensions then uninstalled them. The program itself is running fine and starts up in seconds. Jumping around the menus is lightning fast, but editing code, there is a 1 second lag between the keyboard and the editor.
This happens on a brand new console application project with nothing in it. I have also uninstalled all extensions, resharper etc. The only extensions remaining are VisualHg, Ankh and Nuget.
I have an i7 with 16 gigs of RAM so hardware is NOT the issue.
Is there some sort of cache or files that VS could have locked onto?
How can I figure out what is causing the issue?
Well thanks to #jv42's suggestion, I installed the perfwatson extension and that sorted out the issue. I've since put some of the extensions back and VS2010 is running better than ever before.
I still don't know what caused the issue.
I would find a rollback point before you installed the plug ins. You could have malware that installed with the plugin but was not part of the uninstall. It could just be that the uninstall did not remove something it installed that was causing the problem. It is most likely going to be far faster for you to find a rollback point and start there than to try and figure out what process is causing you the problem and where it is hooked into the registry.
Try resetting your settings from the command line back to the factory default. Warning You will lose all your settings!
devenv /resetsettings
You can back them up, as well as reset, using this article.
finally refer this to fix my problem.
solution is:
Debug->Options and Settings->Debugging -> Symbols
change from All modules, unless excluded to Only specified modules

Whenever I save code while using Visual Studio 2005, an MS-DOS window fills the screen (very) briefly several times. I suspect it is something to do with IntelliSense. This has happened for several months now, and I don't know what initially caused it to start behaving the way it has. It is quite annoying, so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem; and if so, what they did to resolve it?
Update: having pressed Alt+Enter while it was running, I got a glimpse of the program name: it's the VBC (Visual Basic Compiler). Any ideas on how to make this not fill the screen?
Since solved here: https://superuser.com/questions/239049/how-to-stop-command-line-program-from-running-in-full-screen-mode. Definitely worth knowing!
When I press F5, everything compiles fine, but when the app is to be started, VS crashes, showing the "Just in time debugger" dialog.
More than one (similar) solution has this problem. A new solution containing just a form, works. This problem started out of the blue, I have made no changes to the environment as far as I can understand.
I can start the app without debugging (ctrl+F5), and then attach the debugger.
I'm using VS 2008 sp 1.
Never seen this issue, have you tried turning off all your plug-ins like reSharper, CodeRush, etc.?
Update: When worst comes to worst I usually try this command line.
devenv.exe /ResetSettings
devenv.exe /ResetSkipPkgs
devenv.exe /Setup
try all these you can do them all at once or do them individually it is up to you. But be aware that you will be deleting all your settings that you have customized in to Visual Studio, so you may want to back them up.
The last thing you can try is this, to see if the problem is with something weird that is running.
devenv.exe /SafeMode
Starts Visual Studio in safe mode, and loads only the default environment and services, and shipped versions of third-party packages.
I've found the problem now. I had "Step framework source" enabled, which somehow broke the debugger (strange though, because it usually works). Turning that off, made me debug as usual again.
If you have undocked windows in debug layout search KB960075 on code.msdn.microsoft.com (can't add hrefs).
Do you have CLI.exe error issues? Check your event log. I've had the same issue and simply re-staged my machine out of panic since I was so near a deadline. I assumed that it was an issue with the registry and couldn't find an answer.
try repair or reinstall, don't waste time findin' the reason of the problem
I had the same problem, out of the blue the IDE would crash when I started to debug. Happened with any existing project that I opened, even the visual studio samples. I created a new project, just a blank dialog, ran it, and all was good. After that, the problem went away and I was able to debug again.
This happened to me just now, after my computer rebooted itself last night. When I was pressing F5 the app started but instantly shut down and the VS IDE crashed.
To fix it: Debug->Delete All Breakpoints. It worked for me.
