When right-clicking a view in my current project, the menu is missing Publish/Preview/Replace options (see link below). I searched Google and StackExchange to no avail. I compared this project settings to another project which DOES have the options and I still can't see what I'm doing wrong. I am not in debug mode and was able to publish individual views in this project previously. I also tried resetting the import/export settings, and also using the keyboard shortcuts, neither or which helped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My co-worker answered this question: Earlier today my PublishProfiles in Properties were changed. I reverted them back. Yeah, that was all there was to that...

Does anyone else have this issue? There does not seem to be a way to edit the Solution Explorer toolbar. One of the icons for Solution Explorer is missing in my C# projects.
I am using Version 16.10.3.
I managed to add this icon to the wrong place, but maybe you can find the right place and update this answer.
I did this by customizing menus:
Clicking Tools | Customize...
Selecting Commands tab
Clicking Add Command...
Selecting View
Selecting View Code, and then OK
It looks like what you have to do is find the right place to add it in the first place.
The options under Commands are Menu bar, Toolbar, and Context menu, none of which seems to fit. I looked around briefly; maybe you can do a more in depth search to find the right spot.
I have several extensions installed. One of these modifies the Solution Explorer behavior for dynamic nodes. It's possible that extension or another is interfering with this icon. Try also disabling your extensions and see if that has an effect.
Folks, I figured out the issue. When you create a .NET Core 5.0 project the VS environment is setup different. I deleted the .NET 5.0 project and recreated as a .NET Standard one with the same name and the icon showed up again.
In fact, the Studio 'solution' version is different although your using the exact same VS application. Problem solved for now.
I just installed Visual Studio Ultimate on a new computer. It works, but there's no source control menu, and I need that. It also doesn't check out files, not surprisingly, since I can't configure the connection to the server because the menu is missing.
How do I fix this?
Try to right click on project in the "Solution Explorer" and click "Go Online..."
Late to the show... Team Explorer suddenly disappeared for me. restarted VS to no avail.
I was able context menu on project item to right click one of the changed files and click 'Check In'.
The check in worked, the team explorer tab became visible and things are good. Notably, the TEAM main menu item is still missing.
My computer is a couple years old, really needs to be rebuilt. This seems to be one of those VS issues w just live with.
Hope the work around helps someone.

Design View for Xaml on Visual Studio Professional RC 2012 used to work for me. But suddenly stopped for no reason I can figure.
Visual Studio 11 No longer Recognizes Xaml Files.
In properties, it treats XAML files like XML.
In solution Explorer it recognizes it as a xaml file
Right Click -> Design View opens a new Xaml code page
Controls Toolbox shows nothing
My OS is Windows 7 x64.
I have applied all updates up to July 2012 to VS11
I have tried Repairing Visual Studio & Resetting Settings but to no avail.
There is nothing in search or stackoverflow I could find to remedy this.
I have not tried un/reinstalling
Visual Studio 2012 RC designer does not recognize xaml for a Windows Metro app looks identical to my case but my problem suggests the issue is more general than his title.
Reinstalling fixed his issue but does not shed light on this frustrating problem.
Can someone help?
EDIT - Reinstalling nearly resolved the issue. Design view works, toolbox is populated, auto complete is back, XAML is available under tool-> options->text... and control element properties can be viewed.
Everything is normal except for the passing strange fact that XAML Code View no longer does syntax highlighting. This is not suprising since unlike what http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb907395(v=vs.90).aspx expects, there are no XAML prefixed items in the displayed items.
Perhaps relatively minor in the scheme of things but also a very annoying loss.
Suggestion 4 in this link worked for me:
devenv /resetuserdata in Command Prompt.
So at least in my case, re-installing and then the above command cleared all issues. It is possible that resetting user data could have made it unnecessary to re-install but I can't know that now.
I still can't say what caused this but it seems a pretty long tail issue that occurs sporadically and looks to have precursors in older versions.
Check the following:
Tools -> Options
Expand Text Editor -> XAML -> Miscellaneous
Make sure that "Always open documents in full XAML view" is not checked
Or perhaps the default program for opening .xaml files has changed:
Right-click your .xaml file in Solution Explorer
Click Open With...
Select XAML UI Designer
Click Set as Default button
Click OK
EDIT
This does appear to be a known bug with an earlier version of VS11.
If anybody is interested. I had the failure: Could not open XAML and config files in Visual Studio 2012. Now I detected the cause: the Solutions suo files were corrupted after a System Crash. So I (was not sure) rebuilt the sln file in a different Folder and copied the sln and suo files (they are hidden!) to the old Folder. That definitely brought me back the lost functionality. Maybe it is only necessary to delete the old suo files.

I had the same issue in Vs 2012 express edition. Solved by running vs2012 command prompt and executing the code
WDExpress/ResetSettings
In Visual Studio 2013 I had a similar issue - I change my build action & from BundleResource to AndroidResource and I was able to get it working.
I downloaded my working last repo from github, and then I opened it to check it worked, which it did. I replaced the xaml, and cs files and it still didn't work. So I just copied all the files in the root,
App.config
App.xaml
App.xaml.cs
MainWindow.Xaml
MainWindow.xaml.cs
packages.config
.csproj
.sln
Everything loaded again, thank goodness.
When I drag controls from the toolbox to an .aspx page or the designer for that page nothing shows up. I am using Visual Studio 2010 with an existing website project.
** Update
It seems to work now... I'm not sure if this was specific to one project, or a combination of things.
Is the project under source control or in a read only state?
I think the project is so messed up it just doesn't work. If I start a new project it works, so I'm going to leave it at that
My Visual Studio (2008) Editor has stopped to underline Errors (this nifty wavy red lines). I can't really tell when, but it can be related to the installation of .Net Framework 3.5 SP 1 or the MVC Beta (which I guess is unlikely). Furthermore have I installed and uninstalled both CodeRush and Resharper for evaluation purposes (decided not to keep either one of them).
Does anyone know the problem and how to restore this functionality again?
Have you checked Tools→Options...→Text Editor→C#→Advanced→Underline errors in the editor?
I usually like to reset my settings after messing around with plugins, as they tend to mess with settings: Tools→Import and Export Settings...→Reset all settings.
About possible causes.
For VS 2012 and 2013 if you have more than one instance of Visual Studio on different machines binded to one "live" account and have installed ReSharper on one of them, it disables the native IntelliSense and error underlines (to replace by it's own rules) that will be synchronised through your account to another machine without ReSharper.
Found it in Visual Studio 2019 as: Tools > Options > Text Editor > General > Show error squiggles
This is generally called Disable Squiggly or Wavy lines in Visual Studio.
How you will do in Visual studio 2013?
TOOLS -> Options... -> Text Editor -> C/C++ -> Advanced -> Disable Squiggles: True/False (Under IntelliSense) -> Press OK
I know its an old question, and with various solutions, but I have fixed it in different way. I'm working with Unity3D on my C# code using VS2017, when suddenly VS decides to stop underlining error while im typing. However, if I close the file tab and reopen, it suddenly undelines the error.
For example:
class A {
public int x;
s;
}
should obvsiouly give an error for that lonely 's' symbol. But, VS doesn't underline it until I close and reopen this file tab.
Solution:
Copied the entire Unity Project folder (which is like a regular VS Solution folder basically) and worked with the new folder, which issue was gone there.
For visual studio 2017 act according to HeeJae's comments in:

i.e:
Hi. you are probably hitting a known issue. can you try this?
1.Update to latest release If that doesn’t solve it
2.Go to Tools\Options\Projects and Solutions\General and uncheck “Allow parallel project initialization”.
3.Close VS.
4.Delete the “.vs” directory beside their solution file.
5.Reopen VS.
..
thank you
You can re-enable the "Allow parallel project initialization" option after the issue was solved.
I tried to upgrade VS, reset VS settings, clear VS cache and everything people do conventionally but none of them solved this issue! At the end the mentioned solution worked for me magically.
Good luck
Unloading and loading same project again from the solution does the trick. Just right click on the project and click "Unload Project". Once unloaded, again right click the same project and click "Reload Project". Error highlighting will return.
I had the same issue with 2017. There was a 'disable intelisense' option, make sure that is set to false.
For everyone wondering in 2021..
search for "C_Cpp.errorSquiggles" in the settings.
Make sure to have it active for the user, as well as the workspace.
No need to restart Visual Studio.
For me (VS 2019) , after trying the other answers also, setting the scope of analysis from "Current document" to Open document" brought back the missing error markers
Just go to settings and search for errors and Image in Error Squiggles. You can see the Error squiggles (Modified: Workspace - Right now you can't see it because I modified it). Just click on modified and you will see the disabled option. If by mistake you disabled it, just enable it and you can see the red line errors again in your code.
In latest edition, check for .vscode folder in same project folder. There will be a setting.json file in that. Delete the key value pair of "C_Cpp.errorSquiggles": "Disabled". Restart the vs code.
