So I'm doing some texture converting, and thought I'd automate some of the process with batch, first half was done easy, now I'm kind of stuck on second half.
The process goes tga > ctex > bch
tga > ctex was easy since you can individually input and convert each file, so I used this batch script;
for %%f in (*.tga) do NW4C_TextureConverter.exe %%f --output=%%~nf.ctex --format=ETC1_A4 --etc_encoding=mediumimproved
However, this won't work from ctex to bch because I need all ctex files found to be used as a single input so that they all combine into a single bch, like so;
NW4C_h3dbincvtr -o=output.bch (ctext file1) (ctex file2) (ctex file3)...
What would be the easiest way to implement the first script so that instead of using each file individually I can append all files to the end of the second command?
Thanks for the suggestion, searching for something along those lines helped me find what I needed, for future reference the answer was found here and what I used was;
setlocal disableDelayedExpansion set "files=" for /r %%F in (*.ctex) do call set files=%%files%% "%%F" NW4C_h3dbincvtr -o=output.bch %files%

I'm using Sox with Windows 10
I need to concatenate a large number of files. These are all wave files in identical format. The files need to be joined in pairs and saved.
An example might be the best way to explain. I have file1.wav, file2.wav, file3.wav... I also have firstfile.wav. I need to concatenate these files.
sox firstfile.wav file1.wav newfile.wav
sox firstfile.wav file2.wav newfile2.wav
Is it possible to automate the process of concatenating all of these files, creating a new file for each pair of files by a single line from the windows command line?
Any help would be appreciated!
The algorithm I can think of is:
Rename file1.wav to tempfile.wav.
Run command sox firstfile.wav tempfile.wav file2.wav
Rename firstfile.wav to tempfile.wav
Repeat step 2 for the next file using the new file instead of file2.wav else rename tempfile.wav to firstfile.wav.

I have the arduous task of testing our DR backups for all our clients, that is, mounting ShadowProtect Snapshots latest incremental, writing and reading a file, them unmounting the image. The actual ShadowProtect part of batch is fairly simple but I would like to design a batch that can automate this.
Essentially my question is:
How in a batch file can I firstly, enumerate files in a folder, and then place a specific part of a given filename into a variable?
Reason being ShadowProtect incrementals have a naming convention such like:
SERVERNAME_DRIVELETTER_b00X_i000x - whereby b = base image, i = incremental number
I need to mount the latest incremental image, therefore need to parse the folder and find the latest incremental image, based on the number following the i in the filename.
Is this possible in batch?

Something like this should work:

If you have several matching files and want to do something with all of them, you need to put the processing code inside the loop.
Edit:
for /f: process either a file or the output of a command enclosed in single quotes
delims=_: fields in the processed content are separated by underscores
tokens=1-4: assign the first four tokens to the parameters %%f through %%i (first parameter is the one given in the for statement)
dir /b *_*_*_*: list all file where the name contains at least 3 underscores with just their file name (the output of this command is processed by the for loop)
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion: expand variables at run time (otherwise assigning the parameters to variables wouldn't work)

You could always use vbscript or jscript. It is much more powerful than batch files. Also jscript and vbscript hosts are available also on machines that don't have powershell!

I have a batch file that take a directory path as a parameter.
In that file folder, there are any number of .ai.pdf or .pdf files that I need to convert to jpg's. The conversion is not my issue (I am using imageMagick) , but lopping off the full extension is.
I need to be able to either take off the full .ai.pdf (7 characters) or .pdf (4 characters) from the file name and replace it with .jpg I cannot use just ~n in the for loop because it will not take off the .ai in an instance with there is an .ai.pdf (results in file name.ai where I need just the file name)

but no matter what I attempt to try, I get an error when truncating the appropriate amount of extension off of the file name.
Here is my code. This is the first major batch file I have ever created, so I am open to anything, other than installing more programs to do the work.
The thing that kills me, is I had this working and in the shuffle from one server to another and a week of vacation, the working code got....misplaced.

A few things first:
!a! and %%a are two different variables.
if x%b:ai.pdf=%==x%b% does not mean what you think it does. That will only be true when %b% does NOT contain .ai.pdf.
Again, if not x%b:ai.pdf=%==x%b% does not mean what you think. This is true when %b% DOES contain .ai.pdf.
There is no need to do any verification and cutting, just search and replace. ( That is what the %y:x=z% notation does, in this example it replaces every x within %y% with a z.) Let search and replace do the verification. It will only replace what matches the search. That will speed up the your batch file.
Lastly, since you are inside a () code block you will need to use the delayed Expansion turned on with your setlocal statement. This is because everything inside a code block is treated as if it were on a single line. That means that if you change a variable inside a code block, you will not be able to see the new value using the % notation. Instead you need to replace the %'s with !'s. For instance...
setlocal enableDelayedExpansion
set x=Hello
(
set x=Goodbye
echo I don't know why you say "!x!", I say "%x%".
)
...will give you the old Beatles lyric...
I don't know why you say "Goodbye", I say "Hello".

The drawback is that both the files...
X.ai.pdf
X.pdf
...will be translated into th_X.jpg, creating the possibility of duplicate filenames for two different files.
But that's intrinsic to your concept of treating both types of filenames the same. If you don't have a method for avoiding this sort of duplication it might not be a bad idea to leave the .ai on the file, thereby creating two files: th_X.jpg and th_X.ai.jpg, eliminating the possibility of duplicate filenames.
Hm... would this work for you:
for /R %F in (*.pdf) do #for %G in ("%~nF") do #echo %~nxF ==^> %~nG.jpg
(as executed directly from cmd, if run from batch, replace % with %%).
This has a peculiar effect of changing the case of a file to case of a directory if there exists one with the same name as base name of your file (file.pdf will become FILE.jpg if you happen to have a subdirectory called FILE), but that's it (I think).
This also assumes your base names differ (so no file.ai.pdf and file.pdf in same directory)
Okay guys, I am fairly new to working with batch files and I have two files I have previously created which are both working independantly.
I am looking to combine them but I still do not fully understand the FOR command. I was hoping someone could combine these two sets of code into one and if possible explain how the came up with the code they used from my two sources.
This file copies another file (in this case test.txt) to every subdirectory in a directory
FOR /R d:\ %%A IN (test.txt) DO copy d:\%username%\Desktop\Test\Resources\test.txt %%A
FOR /R h:\ %%A IN (test.txt) DO copy d:\%username%\Desktop\Test\Resources\test.txt %%A
This file copies and renames another file X amount of times (in this case 5) renaming each succesive copy in increments of 1.
For /l %%1 in (1,1,10) do (
copy test.txt test%%1.txt > nul

Basically I want the selected file (test.txt) to be copied from a set location to every subdirectory within a directory and then copied in each folder X amount of times and renamed with increasing values e.g.
test1.txt
test2.txt
test3.txt
etc.

This is actually very straight forward.
You already have functioning code that copies from the source to each subdirectory. In pseudo code: FOR (each directory) DO COPY source to target.
You also have code that can copy the file 10 times with incrementing names. You want to do this for each directory in the 1st step. So, again in pseudo code, it will look something like this:
FOR (each directory) DO (
COPY source to target
FOR (N=1 TO 10) DO COPY source to targetN
)
None of the syntax above is real, except that the parentheses after the DO are actually how you allow a batch FOR command to execute a block of multiple commands. (Actually there are other techniques to do this, but the parens work just fine.)
The part that you are missing is how to insert the incrementing number into the %%A target name. This is done by using FOR variable modifiers, as described at the end of the FOR documentation that you can access from the command line by typing HELP FOR, or FOR /?.
The modifiers allow you to deconstruct a file specification into its component parts. Note that the file doesn't have to physically exist, the file spec can still be broken down into the constituent parts.
%%~dpnA = drive:\path\baseName (no extension)
%%~xA = .extension, including the dot.
You've already got the incrementing number - I'm going to use %%N instead of %%1. So the full target will be the concatenation of the 3 components: %%~dpnA%%N%%~xA.
Putting it all together gives the full solution:

I have a list of files in a folder that end with .swf.
I want to change all those files from X.swf to X<some number>.swf.
How can I do that?
This little script will change all *.swf files into the equivalent *_42.swf files.

Actually, as it stands now, it will just echo the commands that it wants to execute. Once you're happy they're correct, you can just remove the echo from that renaming line above.
It works by using for /f to get a list of all SWF files and then using string manipulation to:
remove the last four characters (the.swf extension); then
add a new _42.swf extension onto the end.
And, please, make sure you back them up first :-)
You could use the following one-liner directly from the command prompt:
FOR %F IN (*.swf) DO RENAME "%F" "%~nF123.*"
where 123 stands for your number of choice.
Alternatively you could create a batch file and take advantage of its ability to accept parameters. Use the following script:

FOR %%F IN (*.swf) DO RENAME "%%F" "%%~nF%suffix%.*"
Now if the batch's name is renamer.bat, you can invoke it like this:
renamer.bat 2011
and it will add 2011 to the name of every .swf file in the current directory.
Assuming <X> in your description is supposed to be constant and you don't explicitly require a batch script to solve your problem, you can use Windows Explorer as mentioned in an article by Microsoft titled "Rename a file".
Here's a an extract from said article:
"You can also rename several files at one time, which is useful for grouping related items. To do this, select the files [then press F2]. Type one name, and then each of the files will be saved with the new name and a different sequential number at the end (for example, Renamed File (2), Renamed File (3), and so on)."
