Optimize CSS file size too big - performance

I'm trying to check my website speed by Google PageSpeed Tools.
Google PageSpeed Tool result:

The css file is too much big. I downloaded for check the size and it's size 1.11MB . After then I'm trying to reduce css by Critical Path CSS Generator it's capacity MAX: 800000 characters but my css file have 1169501 characters. So it's can't reduce.
So what process I can use for optimization ?

A bit late, but my approach would be to see why your CSS file is so large. 1.11MiB for styling is too much. For comparison, a good size CSS should be under 150KiB, perhaps 200KiB maximum. In the case that your CSS is over that, you may have some optimizations you can do. A few points of optimization:
Unused CSS. Does your stylesheet contain CSS rules that aren't even used? There are tools out there that can scan/crawl your entire site and provide you with references to unused style lines.
Any data URI's like base64 encoded images in your CSS? Perhaps consider pulling these out. However, if this is your case, you can probably optimize the images through some sort of image file size crunching tool then re-encode them for your CSS.
Style duplication. If a group of classes have a large portion of style overlap, they should share a style definition and then be altered separately further down the CSS for specific style requirements.
Overuse of complex selectors. Generally having an ID or class name is preferred and one should avoid complex cascading DOM selectors. This not only hurts the browser parsing of the CSS but bloats the CSS file itself.
If you're using a template (looks like you're using Wordpress), then I'd almost suggest throwing out your current template, getting a nice lean one that is close to what you want and further styling that one with the above rules in mind. I believe that may be your quickest route to a speedy site.

converting asciidoc to html - too big result file

I created huge documentation with Asciidoc.
It contains about 600 .adoc files.
When I'm saving this documentation as a html file, I'm getting ~70MB file. It is to big file.
What can I do to create htmls from .adoc files. It's important for me to have table of contents.
I found plugin (https://gist.github.com/mojavelinux/d94372393950ca76d594) to asciidoc, but it doesn't work properly

How does the resulting HTML file look? Doesn’t it contain duplicated stylesheets or similar content?
Part of the problem is that built-in Asciidoctor “HTML5” converter generates really bloated and non-semantic markup (it has nothing in common with HTML5 except the doctype). And the built-in stylesheet is not better. The result is quite hard to process for browser, so large document takes long to render. And the HTML file is also quite big, but I don’t think that this is the only cause of your 70MiB file.
You may try alternative converter asciidoctor-html5s. It generates much cleaner markup, focuses mainly on correct semantics, accessibility and compatibility with common typographic CSS styles. However, I don’t have a complete stylesheet for it yet and it’s not (can’t be) compatible with Asciidoctor built-in styles.

Wordpress theme/image management

So I've been creating a custom responsive theme in Wordpress and I've hit a wall when it comes to image management. I'd like to style images in a way that wordpress doesn't seem to inherently support - I'm looking for something like this:
with the images added via the regular wordpress media management pane, and inserted into posts/pages. The images should be out of the flow of the content but accurately placed next to the correct headers/text blocks. Most importantly, the images ought to collapse into a column with the rest of the content at the correct media query breakpoints.
Here's what I've tried, from worst to best:
Hard coded images in template files
Obviously the worst option. Not portable, requires a lot of meddling, and would be almost impossible to align the images with the correct content. Also, no real way of making the images responsive with the content.
Use the default image styling and abandon the idea of pulling the images out of the regular flow
Non optimal, but it would allow anyone to change/edit images easily.
Remove images from the results of the_content(), then place and style them separate.
Portable, but has the same problems as #1 - difficult to align the images with content and keep responsiveness.
Use the featured image on pages that only require one image
Pretty good option for pages that need ONLY one image, but there is no easy way to make the featured image an arbitrary size/aspect ratio.
Use markup in the editor to correctly layout the images
Requires anyone editing the posts/pages to have some knowledge of the underlying theme. This seems to work the best, but it isn't portable (might break stuff on theme change).
While I've had the best results with this option, it seems sort of antithetical to using a cms/wysiwyg editor in the first place.
My question is whether or not the last option really is the best to get the result I want?
In the end, the answer was clearly custom fields, and none of the other options I listed. With the advanced custom fields plugin, it becomes a breeze to do what I wanted. You don't need the plugin, but it makes image management a whole lot easier, as it fully integrates the wordpress media library with the custom field (which you would have to do manually otherwise). With the plugin, custom fields meet all of my needs (responsiveness, portability, and ease of use for the technically challenged).

Is there a better solution than CSS sprites?

this is not a question about a specific programming problem, it's about examining different concepts. If the moderators don't feel this is ok, delete my question.
I need to display 100 png images in a table td, and the images are 75x16 PNGs. In order to reduce the number of HTTP requests, I grouped all 166 images (only roughly 100 are shown at one time) in a big spritesheet, and have used the IMG tag to display the output, one image at a time. This is the code:

$classy is a variable which is calling the correct image based on the SQL query output. transparent.gif is a 1px transparent gif. And this is the result, images are shown correctly inside a table:
The page loading speed increased significantly, maybe 50-60%. In one of my earlier questions some concerns were raised over this being good practice or not. But it works.
The only other solution I've found is using jar compression, but that concept works for Firefox only. This is the code which is used for displaying these same images using jar compression (PHP, no CSS):

All of the 166 images are compressed in a jar archive and uploaded to the server, and as jar is a non-solid archive, only the called image is extracted, not all of them. This solution is lighting fast and I've never seen a faster way of displaying that many images. The concept is here and deserves a link. Another advantage over CSS sprites is that with jar each image can be individually optimized for size (e.g one is optimized to 64 colors, another one to 128, 32...depending on the image) and a large spritesheet can not be optimized as it contains a lot of colors.
So, does anyone know of a solution which would be equally fast as jar? If using CSS sprites to display content is bad practice - what is good practice which gives the same result? The key here is the loading speed of the website with as few HTTP requests as possible.

HTTP Requests
Ever heard of the "2 concurrent connections" (recent browsers have around 6-8). Loading a lot of stuff means if 2 are loading at the same time, the others have to wait in line. Loading it in one big chunk is better. This is the main reason why spriting is used. Aside from the connection limit, you manage those "same purpose" images in one image.
Cache
Now, one big chunk I say but you might ask "Does that make it even worse?". Nope, becasue I have an ace up my sleeve and that's where "cache" comes in to play. One page load is all you need, and then, poof! The rest of the pages that need that image are like the speed of light and Saves you from another HTTP request. Never underestimate the power of the cache.
Images
Other things you can do is to optimize your images. I have used Fireworks and I really love it's image optimization tools. To optimize, here are personal guidelines i follow which you can use in your situation:
GIFs for icons, JPGs for images, PNGs for transparent stuff.
remove unused colors. yes, you can do this in some tools. cuts down size
never resize images in the html. have resized versions instead.
lose quality. yes, there is such thing. lower your image quality to reasonable limits. losing it too much makes your image too "cloudy" or "blocky"
progressive loading images. What it does is it "fast-loads" a blurred image then clears it up later.
avoid animated images. they are a bloat, not to mention annoying.
Server Tricks
There are connection limits - but that does not prevent you from using other domains or even subdomains! Distribute your content to other domains or subdomains to increase the number your connections. For images, dedicate a subdomain or two for it, like say img1.mysite.com and img2.mysite.com or another domain mysite2.com. not only is it beneficial for your user, it's beneficial to distributing server load.
Another method is using a Content Delivery Network (CDN). CDN has a global network of servers, which contain "cached" versions of your website resources. Like say i'm in Asia, when i view your site with CDN'ed resources, it finds that resource in the server nearest Asia.
Mark-up
Not necessarily related speed and semantics but the use of id should be reserved for more important purposes. If you use ID to mark images for their styles, what if there was another element that needs the same image? IDs need to be unique, they can't be used twice. So i suggest using multiple classes instead.
also, IDs take precedence over classes. to avoid unexpected overrides, use classes. learn more about CSS specificity.

I embed small images/icons in the style sheet:

this works with all modern browsers, and does not require me to create sprites (plus it even saves one additional file to load).
In development, the images are defined in the style sheet normally like so:

and I have a system that generates the final style sheet (including consolidating all CSS into one, minifying and replacing the image reference with the data: url) automatically whenever I make a change to a style sheet.
This works well and saves me a ton of work. When compressed with gzip, the CSS file is not much bigger than the individual files added together. After optimizing the PNG/JPG files, the CSS for my start page is 63K uncompressed. Even with a slightly smaller sprite file, I would probably not save more than a fraction of a second in load time for the average user, so I do not bother with sprites.

Is it better to use #font-face or cufon rather than images?

I have a site that requires Trade Gothic. I'm wondering if it's better practice to use #font-face or cufon with a font that looks similar to Trade Gothic or just go the image route. Obviously, using images will look better but what is better practice? For example, is replacing header titles with images like below bad?

It depends on the strictness of your requirement and browser support within your target audience, especially if you want to support mobile devices.
If using a similar-looking font is good enough, the requirement may really be a nice-to-have feature, so anything that degrades gracefully should work. #font-face seems the easiest to implement (just CSS and font files) and it doesn't require Flash or JavaScript (good for mobile users). Google Web Fonts is a great resource or you may even be able to create your own web font using a generator like this one.
You'll have to decide what works best for the majority of your audience and weigh in how flexible the requirement is. If you use a JavaScript-based solution and the audience has it disabled, is that a deal-breaker? Image replacement is not inherently bad, but it can be tedious to maintain if you have much content to worry about (especially if it also changes often).
I use both.
I like to use Cufon for navigation and/or main heading elements, because I think it renders better (specifically in Windows).
For any sub-headers and other text, I use #font-face, so that users may select the text.
I'm currently replacing header images with #font face, as they can load quicker, and text is always more SEO friendly, however you must be careful when doing this as this increases http requests which can then take longer to load. Also there are some legal issue as to which fonts can be used for web.
However it is especially ideal when no other font will do.
FYI browser support for #font face has been available since IE 4, as far as I know.
Well, the most obvious advantage that #font-face and cufon have against the image replacement method that you mention is that they generate your text dynamically and you don't have to create an image for each text that you want to replace.

Does anyone have any experience or remarks about this javascript? Is it worth including? Do you recommend it?
I know many people, myself included that are using various IE hacks to get transparent PNG support. THis looks like a little bit more help, and as long as it works, and the size is fairly small, I wouldn't see much against using it.
I've used it before, and my results are mixed. Those scripts cause IE to churn for a bit on page load. Basically, you have to think of it as iterating through Elements and stylesheet rules to apply "fixes" for areas that are deficient in that particular rendering engine. In some cases, depending on how complicated your markup or stylesheets are, that can take a bit of time and you will see the browser hang.
That said, if you can trade off that performance cost, you will save development time as you'll spend less time hacking around IE6 quirks; IE7/IE8 will provide enough missing functionality that you can avoid certain edge cases, can develop using standards better (min-width/min-height, multiple className selectors, etc.), and certain rendering issues will disappear.
However, if you just need 24-bit transparent PNG support, use a tool built for that. Including IE7/IE8.js for PNG support alone is like pounding in a nail with a tank. Use DD_belatedPNG for that.
It works, but its worth keeping in mind that ie7.js and ie8.js do much more than provide transparent PNG support. Even with the transparent PNG support, its worth keeping in mind that transparent background images cannot be tiled (repeated) using background-repeat or positioned using background-position. This hinders any ability to use CSS rollovers using background-position. I've only used it on one site I've done, and now that I'm updating the site I can't remove the ie8.js because if I do the entire website breaks layout in IE. I don't believe I'll be using it in the future, and instead rely on simple CSS hacks or simply allow my sites to "degrade gracefully" in IE6.
I know that there are some tools for fixing the transparent PNG problem which are more flexible than this. For instance, the jQuery plugin ifixpng2 will support background position, which ie7-js doesn't do.
As long as you are aware of exactly what it fixes, I would say go for it. I'm not sure about this lib exactly, but some libs get very expensive if you have a large DOM, as they tend to hook in HTC file base behaviors on EVERY DOM Element. This causes the dreaded "Loading x of y" status bar message to flash constantly on the initial load, and any newly generated DOM content.
