In a perfect world, the solution I'm looking for would be an api resource tied to my physical phone, e.g. I could POST an sms message to https://url.com/api/sms, and this api would have the end result of sending an sms from my physical phone. This means that the sms conversation would appear natively in my phone; if the recipient replies to the sms, it would appear just as a normal conversation as if I had physically typed the original sms via my phone.
I understand that I could set the replyto/callback/caller-id via Twilio's api. This would mean that the sms gets sent out by the api, and if the recipient replies to it, I could have the reply forwarded to my phone. But what would be missing in this scenario is the original message sent via the api, that the recipient is replying to.
Is there a streamlined way to achieve this, perhaps with Zapier?
One arduous solution I have in mind is to write an on-phone-app to intermediate the sms transmission so that I essentially have an sms-controlled api on the physical phone vs. a traditional http api. (On android, the api would "listen" via DATA_SMS_RECEIVED_ACTION and then send via sendTextMessage). But this seems cumbersome and would also require updating the app code when/if android changes the underlying SmsManager library. The advantage of this is that I could avoid Twilio altogether, by using my service provider's email-to-sms to send to the on-phone-makeshift-sms-api.

I think you are looking for a feature that we just announced in preview. This is known as Hosted SMS and allows you to add SMS powered by Twilio to your existing phone number.

It is NOT possible to alter the senderid when sending SMS using a SIM card + modem. The senderid will simply be the number belonging to that SIM.
If you want to have a custom (alpha) senderid, your only option is using a professional A2P SMS gateway. But even then it is not always possible, as not all countries allow alpha senderids. They might get overwritten to a short/longcode, or the operators require senderid whitelisting (basically, you need to request "access" to an alpha senderid, by sending your personal/company details and SMS content details to the operators. This is done to battle SPAM messages)

Most of the time you don't need any SIM card as you'll be using some sort of API, most of the time a HTTPS/JSON or HTTPS/XML API. If you intend to use a SIM to send SMSes, having a dedicated sender ID will be most probably impossible: using a SIM will make your request arrive through the "regular" signaling link just as "any subscriber" that sends an SMS from his mobile, while using an API will make you use the SMPP links to the SMS-C where specific configuration can be done on per client basis. If I misunderstood something, please sent a comment.

I am writing an app that will facilitate the sending and receiving of SMS messages via a web application. I would like to allow for multiple recipients (not bulk, just a few recipients at most).
I understand that in order to send to multiple recipients, I have to make multiple API calls, and that is fine. The problem I am having is receiving text messages via the Webhook callback. If the SMS was sent to multiple recipients, I cannot see the other recipients in the callback, just myself as the recipient.
Because of this, I have no idea whether this message was intended for just me, or for other recipients as well. This is a problem, because I would like to show threaded conversations similar to Google hangouts, or the SMS applications on all Andorid and iPhones.
I cannot figure out a way to track conversations, if I can't tell if a received message was sent to just me, or a group of recipients. Any suggestions? I do not yes use Twilio on a production server, so if this is not possible to do using Twilio, but is possible using another service, that would be an option for me as well.

Twilio doesn't fully support group messaging the way that you are used to it when using a phone. That actually relies on MMS under the hood to keep the members of the group chat synced up.
Where you make multiple API calls to send messages to each user, that is manifested as just a single message with no group attached. Thus, any reply to that message comes solely from that person you sent the message to. There is no group at all at this point.
The link that Alex shared in the comments is the closest way you can get group messaging to work. It relies on everyone messaging one Twilio number and the application behind it fanning the messages out to all the recipients. The blog post also comes with some handy subscribe/unsubscribe administration for the group.
Am currently developing a web application using Laravel. I have been using twilio trial account to send messages to just one verified phone number and now I want to launch the application and be able to send sms to any phone number filled on the registration page and send an sms to the user after successfully registration. How do i do this to accomplish my task and move on because I am stack and don't know what to do...
I believe Twilio has a limit on whitelisted numbers during the trial period.
Many SMS Gateway providers do this to prevent spammers.

The API is extremely reliable, safe, & easy to integrate in your application.
All you need to do is make a simple HTTP call.
After signing up for the free trial, there will be a screen in the dashboard where you are allowed to enter up to 10 whitelisted numbers during the trial phase.
Once you top up (reload your account with funds), this restriction is lifted.

I want to use Twilio to create an SMS relaying service where the Twilio number is the only number that is exposed, much like web proxy servers that allow you to access the Internet anonymously. I've used the example php code that twilio provides, saved it to a php file and hosted it on a public web server, then updated the messages URL on the Twilio site accordingly. Any message sent to the Twilio number the is forwarded to my mobile. Everything works fine, except for the fact that when I reply to the forwarded message from my phone, the reply includes a header that says "Sent from your Twilio trial account - + mymobilenumber" I understand that the header is inserted because I have a trial account, however I don't want the mymobilenumber field to be exposed. Is it possible to hide this?
I should mention I'm not really a programmer but I'm learning with Twilio.

You will probably need to use some native code to access the CE MAPI api to retrieve the messages from the message store.
