I am in a bit of a pickle.
I have a development machine, imaged at 1507 version of windows,
I do need to update it to 1607 Anniversary Update to replicate a bug our software has.
The caveat is version 1703 Creators is already out.
How can I update my system from 1507 to a specific 1607 version of windows 10?
What I've considered
Windows update - it is not working, I think windows build 1507 is already too old and is excluded from WU.
Windows Update Assistant - is trying to bump me all the way to 1703 ( Creators Edition ) which is not what I need.
MediaCreationTool - I have found a media creation tool targeted specifically for 1607 build from a 3rd party website, but I want to upgrade the system, not re-install the whole windows. And my understanding is this tool will re-install not update the image.
What I think would work for me I think is the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant set to update 1607 specifically, but I can't seem to find that option / download. I only found the assistant version that will take you directly to the latest greatest 1703 ( Creators Windows 10 build )
Any help is appreciated,
Maciej

Old builds expire and will not boot. You may have to go to Win 7 pro and try to upgrade to an older build of win 10 from physical media, then don't go online and monitor the PC from a 2nd computer.
Look through your registry hives and try to extract the old build data. You may need forensic software, and I hope you don't have to carve the drive. If it is an SSD, it may be difficult, or not.
Your browser may not even let you download the old builds

The OS i'm dealing with is a LTBS ( Long Term Service Branch ). It looks like the only way I can proceed is with the dedicated ISO file, and I'll have to wait to obtain it though the IT department of the company I'm working with ... which will take some time but seems this is the only reasonable way to go.
Other options that I've googled in the opening post won't work in my case. I.e. the update assistant path won't work on this version of Windows 10.
I'm marking this as resolved as I ended up with a resolution to my problem.
In terms of down votes ... appreciate the feedback, initially I got a bit upset but the truth is that I eventually figured this out by googling stuff out, and using SO as a parallel path to speed me up is I guess not the indented use case.
I'll bear that in mind next time.
Thanks,
Maciej

Suppose I have a freshly compiled and tested 100 MB software. I want to eventually distribute it and sell it online as a product. This is a cross-platform product (done in C++).
What are the needed technical steps to achieve this? For each step, a description and an example of some software (if pertinent) would help. Also, how important is it would be helpful too.
My problem is that it is not really clear what are the stages to go through to release a software online. This list would help me a lot to know what steps I should investigate in priority.
What I am not talking about / interested in (because it is mainly the results I got while searching for this):
Website building;
Marketing & Sales;
Continuous Integration servers;
Steam, Mac Store, Windows Store;
Open Source.
Steps I identified:
Obfuscate: not sure about this one;
Licensing System: activation code system integrated in the software directly (See Digital River, SafeNet, Reprise, Flexera);
Installers: MSI for Windows (see Wix), DMG for mac;
Code Signing: ensures that your users do not get warnings (Verisign, GlobalSign...)
Free Trial Distribution: putting the installers on our own site is risky because of bandwidth and lags. Your users should be able to download a free trial quickly wherever they are. So a CDN would help (AWS CloudFront).
Auto Update System: notifiy the users, download and install new versions (Omaha);
Activation: this allows the user to activate the product online or directly from within the product;
I think that these two steps are the missing pieces in your list:
Write documentation (in your case PDF/RTF/HTML, or online tutorial)
Integrate a payment provider that will accept the payment on behalf of you
With the above two steps you should be ready to go.
There are some books that I can recommend you (they are 10 year old now, but you see shareware/try before you buy/ software is an old thing - nowadays people tend to write web apps or mobile mostly):

On the desktop, I can use a text editor with the ruby interpreter to run everything, but there isn't an interpreter available for Chromebook. Is there any online software/program/webapp that would let me run Ruby code or emulate it? Kind of like Codeacademy where you put your stuff into the one section and it displays the results in another 'console' section.
I found something called OpenShift, and I'm wondering if it would let me upload a .rb file and have it run or something so I can see what I'm making.
Install linux with Crouton and you can run/install libs etc as you need to
Just found another way...run Servers Ultimate from your Android phone or tablet and access through the hotpoint wifi
Here are some web IDEs that support Ruby.
Cloud9 IDE
Cloud IDE
Koding.com
Codeanywhere
There's also a Chrome extension called SourceKit, which is a bit like TextMate, but saves files directly on Dropbox. However, that alone will not be enough to actually run the code...
One great online code editor to keep in mind is Github. You can create and edit files right in the browser. You could then sign up for a free Heroku account or the free tier of Amazon EC2. Heroku can pull directly from your Github project. EC2 can give you a complete environment to work in, though you'll have to set it up yourself just like you would on your own machine.
Yes there is, Try here tutorialspoint.
Click Try it
Nitrous has a powerful chrome application with native keyboard shortcuts for the IDE, and a number of popular starter templates, including ruby. The first container is 100% free, you can check out the chrome application here:

A friend of mine is a Chromebook user / software engineer and I'm thinking of following him.
He knows VIM and does all of his development on a linux instance that costs $10/mo at linode.com. I think the Chromebook paradigm is that you keep your activities inside of Chrome.
You can lose a lot of time keeping a development environment on your laptop, regardless of its OS.
Meanwhile the VPS can be used from anywhere, even when your laptop dies or you forgot your power cable at home.
If you're new to software development then I bet Cloud9 is a better place to start, even though I haven't tried it yet.
It's also very easy to install linux on a Chromebook these days. See, for example, the Arch wiki explaining the process:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chrome_OS_devices
First install anaconda.
Then conda install -c ruby-lang ruby

I am trying to use Advanced Installer as an application installer and auto-updater. Most of the resources is available on Advanced Installer website only.
Have any one used it before? I would like to hear more about bugs / stability issues if there are, especially auto-update feature
Regarding the bug/stability issues, you can see from the release history the frequency on auto-updater bug fixes (six this year - four in v9.2 and one each in v9.1.1, v9.0.1 and v9.0).
What I've noticed is that occurring issues are promptly solved.
I posted earlier the following:
I have used the free version of Advanced Installer, including its auto-update feature, and I have not experienced any problems with it.
Please note that I was talking about the ability of Advanced Installer MSI scripts to automatically remove older files when upgrading to a newer version of a program. I was not talking about the ability of the application to check for an update automatically. That's probably not in the free feature-set.
I have used advanced Installer It is really good.I would recommend to use it if you are developing a msi setup file for web applications.It is even integrated
with several other tools used for developing such as wix,inno setuo etc
I have not used Advanced Installer, however, just wanted to refer InstallJammer which is a multiplatform installer http://www.installjammer.com/, which I have been using to create application installer and easy to use and configure.
I am using the Advanced Installer daily for my work . I can say that their manuals are not helpful enough, especially for people who do not have any experience with those tools
. However if you pay for support , they can help you almost immediately .
For sure there are some limits about this tools especially if you want your build to be MSI the UI will not respond as well as the exe - but i know they are trying to fix this issue .
If you learn how to use it FOR sure you are going to like it.
The nice part about advanced installer is that they collect analytics (you have to pay for this feature ) and they can show you how many downloads per day , or how many users chose option 1 rather than option 2.
Or you can send those statistics to your webserver and with POST can manipulate however you want - which is free!

How to make a trialware? [duplicate]

how can i make my product as a trial version for 30 days ?
Dear all,
Recently I have developed a software for windows and I want to make a trial version out of it for advertisement. The trial version I have in mind should be runnable only for 30 days for example. I myself have an idea about saving the time of the system in a file or in the registry of windows, but changing the time of the system can also make my program confused.
What do you suggest ?
Thanks in advance
using registry or any other recource on client system can make your software easy to crack
Instead of that you may write a licence server and your application can check the licence over that server for each run..

I need to test my website on Windows, now and in the future. I don't yet have Windows. I just need the software, but don't mind purchasing hardware to get the software. What's the cheapest ethical way to do this?
Some options:
buy a used computer on eBay. Will I be able to upgrade to future versions of Windows if I also upgrade the hardware, including everything but the hard drive? I'm considering a $100 box on eBay with Windows XP Pro.
buy Windows XP Pro (about $140 on eBay), and pay for upgrades as time goes by.
use a screen capture service on the web. (These are either too expensive or don't offer enough control, in my experience).
UPDATE: I bought a sealed version of XP Pro from a reseller on Amazon.
VMWare Server is available for free, and is available for Linux. You'll still have to pay for Windows, but you won't need additional hardware.
Also, consider that in addition to XP, you may also want to test on Vista and Windows 7. Virtualization is a good way to go here.
Another free solution is VirtualBox, from Sun, which is able to install on Windows XP Home (which VMWare Server will NOT). Possibly not what you need given you are non-Windows, but in any case it's another option.
A home Windows licence only costs that much if you buy a shrink wrap copy. The version bundled with new PCs (OEM) is much cheaper - if you are willing to buy the hardware as you say, the cost of the Windows licence could be as little as $25 of the total cost.
For $299 you can get a good netbook; This one has 160GB of harddrive space, Windows XP Home, 1GB of memory, and is plenty fast for web browsing (I've also run SQL Server for testing on one upgraded to 2GB). If the resolution becomes an issue (1024x600), just plug in an external monitor. As a bonus, it's a tiny machine, so it doesn't take up lots of space like another desktop.
EEE 900HA XP
AS mentionned, you can get the Microsoft free VPC Image. Then you convert them to VMWare Images (the server version is free) with VMware vCenter Converter
Download Virtual PC: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b07c9ef0-265a-4237-ae3b-25bc8937d40f&displaylang=en
and use this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7c2b5317-a40f-4e86-8835-d37170c5923e&displaylang=en
Edit: And if you don't have Windows, Virtual PC may work on Wine.
browsershots.org should work for basic needs, although it just shows how it looks, not any of the functionality.
