I have installed XCode 9 from XIP file and then moved it to Applications folder and it even shows up in Launchpad. I have the latest version of Sierra with security update also installed but app store doesn't seem to accept that I have it installed (Xcode) and instead of providing up with with the update it's asking me to install XCode 9.1. Is there any solution or I have to download and install the XCode 9.1 version?
There might be a way around to add some var to the path so the app store could detect it as installation form itself and update it right away!

I have just upgraded my MacOs operating system on one of my older machines from El Capitan to Big Sur. I subsequently tried to open xcode but I get the error:
In order to use “Xcode”, you need to update to the latest version. The version of Xcode installed on this Mac is not compatible with macOS Big Sur. You have “Xcode” 7.3.1. Download version 14.1 for free from the App Store.
When I go to the App Store, the only available xcode that I can see is 14.1 which is for Ventura and therefore not compatible with my current set up and so of no use. How to upgrade to say xcode 13, compatible with Big Sur? I hope it is possible without having to manually download xip file from developers section of apple.
The App Store will only let you download and install the latest version of Xcode.
You answered the question in the last sentence. Download Xcode from Apple's developer site. The site Xcode Releases has Apple's download links for every version of Xcode. Xcode 13.2.1 is the latest version that runs on macOS 11.
I recently updated Xcode to version 6.4. In the App Store it says I have version 6.4 installed, but when I run Xcode it says version 6.3.2.
Does anyone know how I run Xcode version 6.4? Do I need to uninstall and then reinstall Xcode?
I installed it using the App Store and updated through the App Store as well.
So while I was unable to find out where Xcode 6.3.2 or 6.4 was installed on my mac, I uninstalled Xcode by dragging the application to the trash can and emptying it as recommended by Apple.
I then reinstalled Xcode 6.4 from the App Store and it appears to be working.
While it is a simple thing, I thought I would share as sometimes the simple solutions are the ones we don't think about.

I found that I cannot install old simulator into Xcode 6.2 by coping now. I tried to download the 7.1 simulator in Xcode, but always get a no response message. Is there another way to install iOS 7.1 simulator for Xcode 6.2?

Goto Xcode -> Preferences -> Downloads
Starting with Xcode 6.2, it will install to /Library/Developer/CoreSimulator/Profiles/Runtimes rather than in the Xcode.app bundle itself. This allows you to install the legacy runtimes without breaking the signature of the app bundle (which in turn allows you to download delta updates from the store rather than full downloads when updating Xcode.app) and allows them to persist across Xcode.app updates.
I have been trying to research a way that I would be able to revert back to Xcode 4.6.1, I can't seem to find a solution.

Move Xcode 5 to the Trash. Download and install Xcode 4.6. You can download older versions of Xcode from the following URL:

You can also have both Xcode 4 and 5 installed. You will have to rename your existing Xcode 5 app from Xcode to another name like Xcode5 before you install Xcode 4.6 in the Applications folder.
I followed your instruction to downgrade xcode 5.1 to xcode 4.6.1. The steps seems to work, however, when I try to install the command line tool, the Components tab of the Downloads preferences panel shows "No components are available". How do I get the command line tool to show up in the component panel?
Before the downgrade, with xcode 5.1, I did "xcode-select —install" to install command line tool. I assume it has been removed when I dragged the xcode 5.1 to the trash.
I had xcode 3.2.something. and iwth ios sdks 3.0-3.1-....4.1 and 2 iphone simulator sdks.
Now i installed xcode 4.0 with ios sdk 4.3 something like that.
Now all my previous applications cannot be launched nor on device nor on simulator because there's not a single old sdk available.
so next i reinserted the original cds containing macosx and xcode and reinstalled the first xcode i used, but now there's not one ios sdk available at all.
i've been surfing the net for hours now, andi have a couple of questions:
1)have i had to uninstall the xcode 3.2.x before installing xcode 4?
2)how to uninstall applications on mac??? just to make sure that the answer i've found is the correct one.
3)how can erase the traces of all previous xcodes and their sdks in order to install the original one, now that i learned how to install different xcode versions side by side.

So, your questions:
1. Have I got to uninstall XCode 3.2 before installing XCode 4? - No, you don't, but the XCode installer will overwrite your old copy by default. When installing the newer version of XCode and the iOS SDK you must specify a different install directory (eg, create a new folder in the root of your drive called 'Developer 4' for XCode 4.

3. How can I erase all traces of all previous XCodes? - see the answer above for question 2 :)
You can obtain old versions of the SDK from various unofficial online sources if you need to roll back to iOS 3 SDKs. However, it may not be all that much work to move your apps over to the 4.x SDKs.
ok it turned out that at the beginning i was using xcode 3.2.4 with ios sdk 4.1
The xcode that comes with mac osx only targets mac sdk. No iphone support
So i got xcode 3.2.4 setup from a backup (you can find it online) and installed and this should work
And now i have 3.2.5 using sdk 4.2 and targetting all till 3.0
and also xcode 4.0.2
