Bash script for Anaconda installer and license agreement - bash

I'm trying to install anaconda in my own docker container with a bash script. The problem is there's a license agreement that you need to hold down a key to agree to, and the length of which depends on your terminal window size. Is there any way to get around this so that I can run Anaconda3-5.1.0-Linux-x86_64.sh from start to finish from another bash script?
I tried echo "\n\n\n\n\n\n\n" | ./Anaconda3-5.1.0-Linux-x86_64.sh, but this only works when the installer asks for an Enter key press the very first time.

bash ./Anaconda3-5.1.0-Linux-x86_64.sh -b -p $HOME/anaconda3
-b — Batch mode with no PATH modifications to ~/.bashrc. Assumes that you agree to the license agreement. Does not edit the .bashrc or .bash_profile files.
-p — Installation prefix/path.
-f — Force installation even if prefix -p already exists.

Try the yes command.

Or replace "no" with whatever you feel is the appropriate response.

How do I install the anaconda / miniconda without prompts on Linux command line?
Is there a way to pass -y kind of option to agree to the T&Cs, suggested installation location etc. by default?

The command line usage for this can only be seen with -h flag but not --help, so I missed it.
To install the anaconda to another place, use the -p option:
bash anaconda.sh -b -p /some/path
AFAIK pyenv let you install anaconda/miniconda
(after successful instalation)
pyenv install --list

For a quick installation of miniconda silently I use a wrapper
script script that can be executed from the terminal without
even downloading the script. It takes the installation destination path
as an argument (in this case ~/miniconda) and does some validation too.

Silent installation can be done like this, but it doesn't update the PATH variable so you can't run it after the installation with a short command like conda:

Here -b means batch/silent mode, and -u means update the existing installation of Miniconda at that path, rather than failing.
You need to run additional commands to initialize PATH and other shell init scripts, e.g. for Bash:
source ~/miniconda3/bin/activate
conda init bash

Bash on Windows - alias for exe files

I am using the Bash on Ubuntu on Windows, the way to run bash on Windows 10. I have the Creators update installed and the Ubuntu version is 16.04.
I was playing recently with things as npm, node.js and Docker and for docker I found it is possible to install it and run it in windows and just use the client part from bash, calling directly the docker.exe file from Windows's Program Files files folder. I just update my path variable to include the path to docker as PATH=$PATH:~/mnt/e/Program\ Files/Docker/ (put in .bashrc) and then I am able to run docker from bash calling docker.exe.
But hey this bash and I dont want to write .exe at the end of the commands (programs). I can simply add an alias alias docker="docker.exe", but then I want to use lets say docker-compose and I have to add another one. I was thinking about adding a script to .bashrc that would go over path variable and search for .exe files in every path specified in the path variable and add an alias for every occurance, but it does not seem to be a very clean solution (but I guess it would serve its purpose quite well).
Is there a simple and clean solution to achieve this?
I've faced the same problem when trying to use Docker for Windows from WSL.
Had plenty of existing shell scripts that run fine under Linux and mostly under WSL too until failing due to docker: command not found. Changing everywhere docker to docker.exe would be too cumbersome and non-portable.
Tried workaround with aliases in ~/.bashrc as here at first:
shopt -s expand_aliases
alias docker=docker.exe
alias docker-compose=docker-compose.exe
But it requires every script to be run in interactive mode and still doesn't work within backticks without script modification.
Then tried exported bash functions in ~/.bashrc:
docker() { docker.exe "$#"; }
export -f docker
docker-compose() { docker-compose.exe "$#"; }
export -f docker-compose
This works. But it's still too tedious to add every needed exe.
Finally ended up with easier symlinks approach and a modified wslshim custom helper script.
Just add once to ~/.local/bin/wslshim:

The script auto picks up an absolute path to any windows executable in $PATH and symlinks it without extension into ~/.local/bin which also resides in $PATH on WSL.
This approach can be easily extended further to auto link any exe in a given directory if needed. But linking the whole $PATH would be an overkill. )
You should be able to simply set the executable directory to your PATH. Use export to persist.
Command:
export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/directory/executable/is/located/in
In my windows 10 the solution was to install git-bash and docker for windows.
in this bash, when I press "docker" it works
for example "docker ps"
I didnt need to make an alias or change the path.
you can download git-bash from https://git-scm.com/download/win
then from Start button, search "git bash".

Applying sudo to some commands in script

I have a bash script that partially needs to be running with default user rights, but there are some parts that involve using sudo (like copying stuff into system folders) I could just run the script with sudo ./script.sh, but that messes up all file access rights, if it involves creating or modifying files in the script.
So, how can I run script using sudo for some commands? Is it possible to ask for sudo password in the beginning (when the script just starts) but still run some lines of the script as a current user?
You could add this to the top of your script:
while ! echo "$PW" | sudo -S -v > /dev/null 2>&1; do
read -s -p "password: " PW
echo
done
That ensures the sudo credentials are cached for 5 minutes. Then you could run the commands that need sudo, and just those, with sudo in front.
Edit: Incorporating mklement0's suggestion from the comments, you can shorten this to:
sudo -v || exit
The original version, which I adapted from a Python snippet I have, might be useful if you want more control over the prompt or the retry logic/limit, but this shorter one is probably what works well for most cases.
Each line of your script is a command line. So, for the lines you want, you can simply put sudo in front of those lines of your script. For example:

sudo cp *.h /usr/include/

Obviously I'm just making stuff up. But, this shows that you can use sudo selectively as part of your script.
Just like using sudo interactively, you will be prompted for your user password if you haven't done so recently.

Running UIAutomation scripts from Xcode

Did anyone succeed in setting up automated UIAutomation tests in Xcode?
I'm trying to set up a target in my Xcode project that should run all the UIAutomation scripts I prepared. Currently, the only Build Phase of this target is this Run Script block:

When I build this target it succeeds after a few seconds, but the script didn't actually run. In the build log I get these errors:

I am pretty sure, that my javascript and my run script are both correct, because if I run the exact same instruments command in bash it works as expected.
Could this be a bug in Xcode?
I finally found a solution for this problem. It seems like Xcode is running the Run Scripts with limited rights. I'm not entirely sure, what causes the instruments command to fail, but using su to change to your user will fix it.
su $USER -l -c <instruments command>
Obviously, this will ask you for your password, but you can't enter it when running as a script. I didn't find a way to specify the password for su, however if you run it as root, you don't have to specify one. Luckily sudo can accept a password via the pipe:
echo <password> | sudo -S su $USER -l -c <instruments command>
If you don't want to hardcode your password (always a bad idea), you could use some AppleScript to ask for the password.
I posted the resulting script below. Copy that to a *.sh file in your project and run that script from a Run Script.

It seems as though this really might be an Xcode problem; at any rate, at least one person has filed a Radar report on it. Someone in this other thread claims you can work around this exception by disconnecting any iDevices that are currently connected to the computer, but I suspect that does not apply when you're trying to run the script as an Xcode target.
I would suggest filing a Radar report as well; you may get further details on the issue from Apple, or at least convince them that many people are having the problem and they ought to figure out what's going on.
Sorry for a not-terribly-helpful answer (should have been a comment, but comments and links/formatting do not mix very well). Please update this question with anything you find out on the issue.
Note: this is not a direct answer to the question, but it is an alternative solution to the underlying problem.
While searching for in-depth information about UIAutomation, I stumbled across a framework by Square called KIF (Keep it functional). It is a integration testing framework that allows for many of the same features as UIAutomation, but the great thing about is is that you can just write your integration tests in Objective-C.
It is very easy to setup (via CocoaPods), they have good examples too, and the best thing is that it's a breeze to set up with your CI system like Jenkins.

Late to the game but I have a solution that works for Xcode 5.1. Don't know if that's what broke the above solution or not. With the old solution I was still getting:
Failed to load Mobile Device Locator plugin, etc.
However, this works for the release version of Xcode 5.1.

Notice I removed the unneeded su command and added the xcrun command. The xcrun was the magic that was needed.

Edit: To make this work for different people checking out the project replace the following:

sudo -u ${USER} xcrun instruments
Since you are just doing an sudo to the same user no password is required.

In XCode - if you load up organizer (XCode->Window->Organizer)
Then select your machine under devices -> 'Enable Developer Mode'
This should remove the need for prompts with instruments.

How to use sudo inside of a Run Script build phase in Xcode 4?

I need use execute a command inside of a script in a Run Script build phase in Xcode 4 using sudo. However, the compiler complains:
sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified
Anyone have a clever solution for this problem?
One solution is to place the sudo password in an executable shell script like the following:

echo thesudopassword
This shell script might be called password.sh
Then, setup the environment variable SUDO_ASKPASS=password.sh
Once this is setup, the -A option can be passed to sudo. This option uses the ASKPASS program to obtain the sudo password. The ASKPASS program need only write the password to stdout.
So, for example,
sudo -A ditto -V /tmp/testserver.dst /
This is obviously a rather insecure solution, but it does work.
Two ideas that haven't been suggested yet, both of which are probably better/safer than the currently accepted answer:
First option would be to put the part of the script that needs to be run as root in a script file (.sh or something), and then make it setuid as root: chmod go-w,+sx scriptfile, sudo chown root scriptfile. This means that script will automatically run as root, which avoids you needing to authenticate to run it (just to change it). As long as its operation isn't subject to user input, this should be quite safe. (Of course, if you make a script that takes an input argument and deletes it or runs it, or does most anything else with it, that would not be safe.)
Second option would be to use applescript (possibly via osascript). Applescript allows you to do shell script "sudo command goes here" with administrator privileges, which will pop up a graphical dialog asking for a password.
The first of these options would be good for an automated environment, though it might not deal well with (for example) being checked into an SCM, or being sent to another user. The second option would work better with that, but requires a password input every time, so doesn't work as well for an automated build script.
Another solution to this problem is to modify sudoers file and add your account to it and state that you should never be asked for the sudo password. To accomplish this is fairly straightforward:

In the User privilege specification section add a line that looks like
youraccountname ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
Of course, this can be a dangerous thing to do, so be careful. I would suggest reading the man page for sudoers and visudo before going this route.

This runs the script and logs it output to /tmp/build-log and /tmp/build-log.err

You can also execute XCode giving it the project as parameter from the Terminal using sudo like this:
sudo /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode /path/to/your/project.xcodeproj
This is the easiest solution I could think of, but there may be some drawbacks, since you would be executing XCode as root.
No need to write your sudo password anywhere. Just open a terminal window and type
$ sudo echo "hello"
Once you've typed your password, it will be good for a while - not sure how long - and the shell spawned by Xcode will inherit this permission.
If you get the "no tty present" message again later, just repeat the procedure
