Bar chart that doesn't start at zero - d3.js

It's a super simple bar chart with one bar
The y axis shows values from 0-200
The values for the bar are start at 50 and finish at 150 so I wanted to draw the bars at these values so the bar would be somewhere in the center of the graph.
I sort of have the height but can't fix the y position.

You can make the range going from 0 to height...
scale.range([0, height])
...or from height to 0...
scale.range([height, 0])
...but this doesn't change the fact that, in an SVG, the coordinates system of the y axis goes from the top to the bottom of the page. Therefore, the y attribute has to be always smaller than the height for a rectangle.
That being said, you have to use finish for the y attribute:

In d3 selection method chaining, how can I reference the values of the selected element?

I have a simple horizontal bar chart, and I'm trying to place an image to the left of each horizontal bar to serve as a label for the bar.
At this point in the script, the bars have been created and are displayed.
I've taken a code sample for adding the labels to the right of the bars (which are included in the image) and tried to update it to place an image to the left.

My understanding here is that I'm selecting each of the 'bar' elements and appending an image (which is the same image for all right now while I work on placement).
I'm setting the y attribute of the image element to midrange of each y range. This is how the label on the right has its y attr set. x, for now I'm just setting to left of the bar. Then I set the actual href to the image.
My problem now has to do with SIZING the image, and I'd like to be able to set its height/width dynamically based on the height of the 'bar' elements. These heights are obviously dependent on how many bars there are (this graph should scale up or down to any number of people)
Obviously the positioning isn't perfect, but for now I'd just be happy being able to resize the height/width attributes of the image based on the height of the bars in the chart.
Is there a way to reference in the selection and method chaining the attributes of the elements being selected?

Not exactly what I was looking for, but I can set the
attr("height", x)
of the image element using the same function that sets the height attribute of the bars

How to correctly transition stacked bars in d3.js

I'm trying to get a stacked bar chart to animate correctly as bars come and go. There's probably a good example of this somewhere (maybe I'll ask as a separate question), but the examples I'm finding don't show transitions with individual stack elements exiting and entering I want to make sure that as bars are exiting, they drag down the bars above them, and as they're entering, they push up the bars above them. And I don't want any gaps or overlaps midway through the transition.
Can anyone point me to an example that does this?
Correcting my wrong-headed question:
Ashitaka answered the question with a helpful jsfiddle. His answer prompted me to look at the d3 stack layout more closely, where I read:
In the simplest case, layers is a two-dimensional array of values. All of the 2nd-dimensional arrays must be the same length.
So, I concluded I was going about this all wrong. I shouldn't have been trying to remove stack bars at all. If bars in my data were going to disappear, I should leave them in the data and change their height to zero. That way the transitions work great. I haven't yet had to deal with new bars appearing.
One confusing aspect of transitioning stacked charts (and working with SVG in general) is that the coordinate system origin is at the top-left corner, which means that y increases downwards.
First, our data should have 2 y related attributes:
y, the height of the bar
And y0, the baseline or the y position of the bar when it's on top of other bars. This should be calculated by d3.layout.stack().
Then, we should create 2 scales:
One for height, which works exactly as expected:

And one for the y position, which works in the reverse way:

With these two scales, we can create some functions to calculate the appropriate y positions and heights of our bars:

Next, it's critical that we create a key function so that elements are bound to the correct data:
var joinKey = function (d) { return d.name; };
Without this function D3 would join the data using its index, which would break everything.
Now, to remove or add a set of bars from the stack, we take these steps:
Recalculate the stack:
var newStack = stack(enabledSeries());
Join the new stack with the current selection of layers with the data function:
layers = layers.data(newStack, joinKey);
With our key function, D3 determines the bars that are to be added, removed or updated.
Access the appropriate bars:
layers.enter() contains the "enter selection", that is, the new set of bars to be added.
layers.exit() contains the "exit selection", that is, the set of bars to be removed.
And simply layers contains the "update selection", that is, the bars that are to be updated. However, after enter.append the "update selection" is modified to contain both entering and updating elements. This has changed in D3 v4 though.
Animate the bars:
For added bars, we create them with height 0 and y position barBaseY.
Then we animate all the bars' height and y attributes.
For removed bars, we animate them to height 0 and y position barBaseY, the exact opposite of adding bars. Then we animate all the remaining bars' height and y attributes. D3 is smart enough to render all these animations at the same time.

Adding a drag icon to Focus+Context via Brushing Chart

I am trying to adapt Mike Bostock's Focus+Context via Brushing chart at: bl.ocks.org/mbostock/1667367 ‎ to include a drag icon on both vertical lines of the brush rectangle. These should appear once a selection is made and act as a visual cue to shrink or expand the selected/brushed area. I see the placement of the images being dynamic i.e. moving fluidly with the brushed area as opposed to an update after the brushed area is reset. What seems most reasonable to me would be to add an svg image to the context rectangle like so:

Lars, thanks for the pointer which generally led me in the right direction although I ended up directly adapting from an example at https://engineering.emcien.com/2013/05/7-d3-advanced-brush-styling. That example is a bit more complex so i borrowed from a subset relevant to my purposes.
Steps i followed include
1.) Creating two images appended to the context g element and initializing their position somewhere that doesn't give the impression that the chart is brushed on loading {i put them halfway (vertically) and close together around the end of the context(horizontally)}.

2.) Within the brush function, i created a variable to hold brush.extent(), then tied the x attributes of the images to its min and max x values.

One things i'm not completely satisfied with is that when i initially created the images after the brush rectangle, they sat on top of it, preventing me from being able to brush if i hovered over the images (which is the intuitive reaction desired). I ended up placing the images behind the rectangle which has a low opacity. Not the 100% accurate visual representation sought, but it works just fine.

draw a grid or rectangles using a scale

I'm building my first line graph in d3:

I want to know how to utilize either the scale or axis allow me to draw a grid (of, presumably rectangles) where I can set a different background colour for each of the section of the grid...so I can alternate colours for each cell of the grid. I want the grid to be drawn and be constrained by the axes of my graph and then also adapt if the spacing of the axes ticks change (i.e. the axes changes like this: http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/1667367). So if my graph has an x axis with 4 ticks and a y axis of 7 ticks then my graph will have a background grid that's 7 blocks high and 4 blocks wide.
I've been playing with the idea of using a range which starts at zero and ends at the full width of the graph but I don't know what value I can use for the step. Is there any way to sort of query the axis and return how many ticks there are?

A better approach than your current solution would be to use scale.ticks() explicitly to get the tick values. The advantage of that is that it will still work if you change the number of ticks for some reason.
To get an alternating grid pattern instead of a single fill, you can use something like this code.

Finally, to get the full grid pattern, you can either use an explicit loop as you've suggested, or nested selections. The idea here is to first pass in the y ticks, create a g element for each and then pass the x ticks to each one of these groups. In code, this looks something like this.

To set the position, you can access the indices within the top and bottom level data arrays like this.

To set the x position, you need the index of the inner array (passed to the set of g elements), which can be accessed through the second argument of your callback. For the outer array, simply add another argument (j here).
And that's really all there is to it. Complete jsfiddle here. To update this grid dynamically, you would simply pass in the new tick values (gotten from scale.ticks()), match with the existing data, and handle the enter/update/exit selections in the usual manner.
If you want to do without the auxiliary scales (i.e. without .rangeBand()), you can calculate the width/height of the rectangles by taking the extent of the range of a scale and dividing it by the number of ticks minus 1. Altogether, this makes the code a bit uglier (mostly because you need one fewer rectangle than ticks and therefore need to subtract/remove), but a bit more general. A jsfiddle that takes this approach is here.
So after a few helpful comments above I've got close to a solution. Using Ordinal rangebands get me close to where I want to go.
I've created the range bands by using the number of ticks on my axis as a basis for the range of the input domain:

Bar chart with negative values

I need to create a d3 bar chart that can have negative values. Ideally the axis zero position should be calculated based on the extent of the data, but I'd settle for a solution that assumes symmetric positive and negative extent, i.e. that it would be always in the middle of the chart.
Here's an example of what I'd like to achieve.
OK, let's say you have an array of numbers as your dataset, and this includes some positive and negative values:
var data = [-15, -20, -22, -18, 2, 6, -26, -18];
You'll want two scales to construct a bar chart. You need one quantitative scale (typically a linear scale) to compute the bar positions along the x-axis, and a second ordinal scale to compute the bar positions along the y-axis.
For the quantitative scale, you typically need to compute the domain of your data, which is based on the minimum and maximum value. An easy way to do that is via d3.extent:

You might also want to nice the scale to round the extent slightly. As another example, sometimes you want the zero-value to be centered in the middle of the canvas, in which case you'll want to take the greater of the minimum and maximum value:

.domain([-x0, x0])
.range([0, width])
.nice();
Alternatively, you can hard-code whatever domain you want.

For the y-axis, you'll want to use rangeRoundBands to divide the vertical space into bands for each bar. This also lets you specify the amount of padding between bars. Often an ordinal scale is used with some identifying data—such as a name or a unique id. However, you can also use ordinal scales in conjunction with the data's index:

Now that you've got your two scales, you can create the rect elements to display the bars. The one tricky part is that in SVG, rects are positioned (the x and y attributes) based on their top-left corner. So we need to use the x- and y-scales to compute the position of the top-left corner, and that depends on whether the associated value is positive or negative: if the value is positive, then the data value determines the right edge of the bar, while if it's negative, it determines the left edge of the bar. Hence the conditionals here:
