Marcro to define a variable in Makefile - makefile

there are 6 program in the directory:
call_api_pcie
call_api_pcie_static
call_api_sockrpc
call_api_sockrpc_static
call_api_sockraw
call_api_sockraw_static
I want to use some flags/config to let the Makefile know which program is in the list
There will be some Flag or config to define if this feature/program is used.
PROG_USE_PCIE := 1
PROG_USE_SOCKRAW := 1
RROG_USE_SOCKRPC := 1
PROG_USE_STATIC := 1
Make a list in a variable to defines all these program if [PROG_USE_XX] is enabled
PROGRAM_NAME := call_api
MY_PROGRAM := nothing
If the config/flag [PROG_USE_XX] is enabled, add the matched program
#if [PROG_USE_xx] is enabled, it will be include
ifeq [PROG_USE_STATIC==1] && [PROG_USE_PCIE==1]
MY_PROGRAM += call_api_pcie_static
endif
ifeq [PROG_USE_STATIC==1] && [PROG_USE_SOCKRAW==1]
MY_PROGRAM += call_api_sockraw_static
endif
ifeq [PROG_USE_STATIC==1] && [PROG_USE_SOCKRPC==1]
MY_PROGRAM += call_api_sockrpc_static
endif
ifeq [PROG_USE_PCIE==1]
MY_PROGRAM += call_api_pcie
endif
ifeq [PROG_USE_SOCKRPC==1]
MY_PROGRAM += call_api_sockrpc
endif
ifeq [PROG_USE_SOCKRAW==1]
MY_PROGRAM += call_api_sockraw
endif
Is there any easy way to define these flag and list ?
when it comes to "install" section in Makefile
pushd ${BUILD_DIR} && cp -f ${MY_PROGRAM} ${dest_dir} && popd

I think I'd do it this way:
PROGS := pcie sockraw sockrpc
PROG_USE_STATIC := 1
PROGRAM_NAME := call_api
MY_PROGRAM := #nothing
PROGS := $(addprefix $(PROGRAM_NAME)_, $(PROGS))
ifeq ($(PROG_USE_STATIC),1)
PROGS += $(addsuffix _static, $(PROGS))
endif
MY_PROGRAM := $(PROGS)

Passing of variable from One Make Target to Another

Target_2 is unable to get value of eval set in target_1,
The destination eval turns out empty handed, i.e no value is assigned to it
.PHONY:target_1
target_1:
ifeq ($(RQM_SETUP),ci)
$(eval efs-mount-path := $(shell mktemp -d))
else
#echo "$(VAR)"
endif
.PHONY:target_2

$(eval destination := $(efs-mount-path))

Succinctly adding verbose output to GNU make

I would like to add verbose output to a gnu makefile if V=1 is passed on the command line.
I can already do it in three lines as follows:
ifeq ($(V),1)
$(info SRC_FILES=$(SRC_FILES))
endif
Is there some more terse idiom, e.g., that appears all on one line? Ideally I'd like something like:
$(verbose SRC_FILES=$(SRC_FILES))
which may not be possible, or at least a one-liner like:
$(if $(V) $(info SRC_FILES=$(SRC_FILES)))
$(info $(if $(V),SRC_FILES=$(SRC_FILES))) almost does what you want. Its only drawback is that it outputs an empty line when V is undefined.
EDIT: from MadScientist's remark, and as initially suggested by BeeOnRope, $(if $(V),$(info SRC_FILES=$(SRC_FILES))) works exactly as expected, without the empty line when V is undefined.
You could also define a macro that prints an info message about a variable if and only if V is defined:
define verbose
$(if $(V),$(info $(1) = $($(1))))
endef
$(call verbose,SRC_FILES)
Of course, if you want a more generic macro, you can pass it the text to print:
define verbose
$(if $(V),$(info $(1)))
endef
$(call verbose,SRC_FILES = $(SRC_FILES))
Note that there are other types of information that you may want to control with a verbosity level variable. For the commands echoing, the commands outputs and the quiet command options I frequently use the following:
# Verbosity
ifeq ($(V),)
Q := #
MQ := --quiet
ECHO := echo
OUT := &> /dev/null
else ifeq ($(V),1)
Q :=
MQ :=
ECHO := echo
OUT :=
else
$(error V: invalid value ($(V)))
endif
foo:
$(Q)$(ECHO) 'making $#' && \
some-command $# $(OUT)
bar: cuz
$(Q)$(MAKE) $(MQ) $#
...
Maybe this will be practical:
verbose = $(if $(VERBOSITY),$(info $(-verbose)))
-verbose = $(if $(findstring 0,$(VERBOSITY)),$1 )$(if $(findstring 1,$(VERBOSITY)),$2 )$(if $(findstring 2,$(VERBOSITY)),$3 )$(if $(findstring 3,$(VERBOSITY)),$4 )$(if $(findstring 4,$(VERBOSITY)),$5 )$(if $(findstring 5,$(VERBOSITY)),$6 )$(if $(findstring 6,$(VERBOSITY)),$7 )$(if $(findstring 7,$(VERBOSITY)),$8 )$(if $(findstring 8,$(VERBOSITY)),$9 )$(if $(findstring 9,$(VERBOSITY)),$(10) )
VERBOSITY = 0
$(call verbose,warninglevel 1,warninglevel 2,warninglevel 3,info 1,info 2,info 3)
VERBOSITY = 2
$(call verbose,warninglevel 1,warninglevel 2,warninglevel 3,info 1,info 2,info 3)
VERBOSITY = 012345
$(call verbose,warninglevel 1,warninglevel 2,warninglevel 3,info 1,info 2,info 3)
Output:
warninglevel 1
warninglevel 3
warninglevel 1 warninglevel 2 warninglevel 3 info 1 info 2 info 3

error installing Caffe on Mac 10.12 (Sierra) "symbol(s) not found for architecture x86_64"

i have been trying to set up Caffe on my macbook for three days now... maybe you can help me?
i followed several tutorials including these:
the official berkeley vision caffe installation guide
https://gist.github.com/kylemcdonald/0698c7749e483cd43a0e
https://eddiesmo.wordpress.com/2016/12/20/how-to-set-up-caffe-environment-and-pycaffe-on-os-x-10-12-sierra/
but whenever i try to run
make all
i get this error:
LD -o .build_release/lib/libcaffe.so.1.0.0
clang: warning: argument unused during compilation: '-pthread'
Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64:
"cv::String::deallocate()", referenced from:
caffe::WindowDataLayer<float>::load_batch(caffe::Batch<float>*) in window_data_layer.o
..............
..............
..............
ld: symbol(s) not found for architecture x86_64
clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)
make: *** [.build_release/lib/libcaffe.so.1.0.0] Error 1
here's what i did so far:
i was originally on mac os 10.11 el capitan with an outdated xcode (7.3). in order to update xcode i had to upgrade to Sierra (mac os 10.12)
i have xcode 8 now, but downgraded the xcode command line tools to 7.3.2. (i can't remember why but it was recommended for Caffe or maybe CUDA)
i don't have an NVIDIA graphics card but still installed CUDA (from what i read online it's a prerequisite for caffe)... i tried cuda 7 (as recommended on the berkeley vision site) and currently cuda 8
right now i'm using CUDA-8
i used homebrew to install opencv as recommended online (opencv 2.4.13.2)
i use openBLAS
i use protobuf 3.3.0
i added opencv_highgui opencv_imgproc opencv_core opencv_imgcodecs to LIBRARIES in Makefile
i realize that the linker errors have to do with libc++ vs libstdc++ ! i manually checked all kinds of dependencies with otool -L to see if any still used libstdc++ but it seems they should all be built with libc++.
any hints or advice?
pls help!
thank you!

Just a couple of hints and guesses.
This isn't necessarily a libc++/libstd++ inconsistency.
opencv_imgcodecs is only available in OpenCV 3+, so that may make some problems.
If you checked the opencv libraries and they were all linked to libc++, check if this command ld -lopencv_highgui, and for the other libraries as well, won't tell you the library is not found.
Another thing to check is making sure you only have one OpenCV installation, sometimes a conflicting copy may cause these problems.
You may also try to compile a standalone OpenCV example code, to make sure this is a problem with Caffe.
opencv_imgcodecs is only available in OpenCV 3+, so that may make some problems.
One last thing: remove everything, enable the cpu only mode to get rid of CUDA dependency, and this time use the latest version of everything, specifically: Latest Xcode command line tools and OpenCV3.
Posting your Makefile in your question could help, too.
You can set LDFLAGS before execute make all
$ LDFLAGS="`pkg-config --libs protobuf` `pkg-config --libs opencv`"
$ make all

Makefile set variable in target

I have a makefile where a variable $DEBUG decides whether to build for deployment or debugging. There is one main Makefile, and multiple platform-specific makefiles that get included. I want the variable $DEBUG to be set to 1 automatically when the target test is built.
The main makefile:
DEBUG := 0
test : override DEBUG := 1
DIST_DIR := dist/
ifeq ($(DEBUG), 1)
BUILD_DIR := build/debug
else
BUILD_DIR := build/deploy
endif
# detect operating system
ifeq ($(OS), Windows_NT)
UNAME := Windows
else
UNAME := $(shell uname -s)
endif
# include platform-specific Makefile
export
ifeq ($(UNAME), Darwin)
include Makefile.darwin
endif
ifeq ($(UNAME), Linux)
include Makefile.linux
endif
And the platform-specific Makefile.linux:
...
CXX := clang++-3.8
CXXFLAGS := -std=c++14 -fPIC -I./external/include -fcolor-diagnostics
LDFLAGS :=
LDLIBS := -lpthread -lm
ifeq ($(DEBUG), 1)
CXXFLAGS += -g
else
CXXFLAGS += -O3 -DNDEBUG
endif
...
all : $(TARGET)
test : $(TEST_TARGET)
$(TEST_TARGET)
So there are two rules for test: One in the main makefile sets the target-specific variable $DEBUG, and the one in Makefile.linux builds the test. The variables used for building ($CXXFLAGS, $BUILDDIR, and others) are set before the rules, and use conditionals.
Everything in the makefiles is working correctly, however calling make test does not alter the variable $DEBUG: both $CXXFLAGS and $BUILDDIR still get set to the values they would have for a deployment built.
Is there a way to first set $DEBUG := 1 in Makefile when the target is test, and then normally proceed?
Or is there a special variable that contains the target name, for example
ifeq ($(MAKEFILE_TARGET), test)
...
endif
test : override DEBUG := 1 doesn't work because it declares a target-specific variable that is only visible within that recipe.
There does exist a variable containing the target names that were specified at the command line: MAKECMDGOALS. Note that it doesn't include the default target if it wasn't explicitly specified at the command line.
Example makefile:
DEBUG := $(filter test,$(MAKECMDGOALS))
all:
#echo all : $(MAKECMDGOALS) : $(DEBUG) : $(if $(DEBUG),1,0)
test:
#echo test : $(MAKECMDGOALS) : $(DEBUG) : $(if $(DEBUG),1,0)
Usage:
$ make
all : : : 0
$ make all
all : all : : 0
$ make test
test : test : test : 1
$ make all test
all : all test : test : 1
test : all test : test : 1
One simple option is to have your test target recursively invoke make with DEBUG=1. That works with included makefiles as well. Example:
DEBUG := 0
test:
make DEBUG=1
DIST_DIR := dist/
...

Problem creating gnu makefile "function"

I have a big chunk of my makefile (~50 lines) that needs to be copy-pasted 5 times for different case (the different libraries used). Is it possible to create a function in a makefile and just call that function instead of copy-pasting?
This is an example of what I've tried. Basically this tries to find the right path for an installed library.
define Flags_template
$(1)_include_home := $(HOME)/usr/include
$(1)_include_home_name := $(HOME)/usr/include/$(1)
ifneq ($$(wildcard $($(1)_include_home)/$(2)),)
$(1)_Include := $$($(1)_include_home)
else
ifneq ($$(wildcard $($(1)_include_home_name)/$(2)),)
$(1)_Include := $$($(1)_include_home_name)
endif
endif
CFLAGS += -I$$($(1)_Include)
endef
$(eval $(call Flags_template,stdcout,StdCout.hpp))
.PHONY: test
test:
# stdcout_include_home_name = $(stdcout_include_home_name)
# stdcout_Include = $(stdcout_Include)
# CFLAGS: $(CFLAGS)
Typing "make", I get this output:
# stdcout_include_home_name = /home/nicolas/usr/include/stdcout
# stdcout_Include =
# CFLAGS: -I
It's so close. But note the last "-I", I always get dupplicates, one fully expended, one empty...
I don't understant what needs to be eval'ed, escaped with two $, etc.
How can I achieve this?
Thank you very much.
Does §8.8 of the GNU Make (3.82) manual help?
[...] Although it might seem overly complex to use eval in this example,
rather than just writing out the rules, consider two things: first, the template definition (in
PROGRAM_template) could need to be much more complex than it is here; and second, you
might put the complex, “generic” part of this example into another makefile, then include
it in all the individual makefiles. Now your individual makefiles are quite straightforward.

The difference is in the wildcard invocations:
ifneq ($$(wildcard $($(1)_include_home)/$(2)),) # Fails
ifneq ($$(wildcard $$($(1)_include_home)/$(2)),) # Works
I have half an intuition about when double-dollars and when single-dollars are needed; I am not sure I can articulate the decision, though.
